Jade Goody website 'troll' from Manchester jailed

www.bbc.co.uk

An "internet troll" who posted obscene messages on Facebook sites set up in memory of dead people has been jailed.

Colm Coss, of Ardwick, Manchester, posted on a memorial page for Big Brother star Jade Goody and a tribute site to John Paul Massey, a Liverpool boy mauled to death by a dog.

The 36-year-old "preyed on bereaved families" for his "own pleasure", Manchester Magistrates Court heard.

He was jailed for 18 weeks for sending "malicious communications".

The posts included comments claiming he had had sex with the victims' dead bodies, the court heard.

please don't get me wrong here.
in no way am i sticking up for this troll.
unless he should have a right to be the rude person he is.
where shall the line be drawn?
wouldn't this be considered more along the lines of hate speech here in the u.s.?
personally, i don't think this guy is very far out of the ordinary concerning message boards.
bet there is even a few here on ats who might mellow a bit thinking they might be held to the same standard as this guy.
what think you?

This is a deliberate overreaction to squelch a man's freedom of speech.... in no way do I stick up for this fag but hey there are better ways to have dealt with this problem.... outside of the internet there should be no justice... what happens on the internet stays on the internet in my opinion.... the families could simpley block him.... people like that just want attention... ignore them and you take away their power... "drowning in a cup of water" is what someone does when give any form of attention to this sort of person.... but the law getting involved I dont like... eventually they will attempt to make laws for the internet which will increase the power of govenment and further strip from the people any privacy.... this man deserves an old fashioned beat down.... nothing more or less

You might as well get ready for the crack down on the net. At least in the united states. It's coming. But then so is the NWO...but that's another forum...lol.

Serves him right. I wish the same could be done with every other Internet-Troll aswell, that considers it their lifetime-mission to insult others and just be as nasty as they can.

Add to this, the other news outlet about the guy losing his job for spreading extreme anti-gay propaganda on Facebook.
Good to see that actions is starting to be taken against these evil people.

At first I was alarmed, I got the image of some warped kid who was having fun in his own strange way. Then I read that the guy was 36 and I couldn’t care less.

And I'm sure he will! It's just a shame that he isn't locked up in Liverpool really.

It does serve as a reminder that society is becoming less civil; especially in electronic mediums. I don't have an opinion on how he should be treated/punished, his behavior is clearly reprehensible,
and while people have the right to say what they want it just goes to show that some people are better off keeping their traps shut.

Is it against free speech to say "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all"? I don't think so. I'm just surprised he was audacious enough to use a completely non-anonymous social network like facebook to do this sort of thing where he can be easily identified. stupid is as stupid does.

Do people not realize there is an ignore function on most sites, or that if you manage or own the site you can simply click the delete button?

Trolls are inevitable on the Internet...just as opinions are like pie-holes, everyone on the Internet has two of them and it is a universal Law that they are going to share those opinions whether you like them or not. To me it sounds like some people need to be awarded their "Welcome to the Internet" and "You Won the Internet" prizes and get over it.

In the U.S. we have protected Freedom of Speech (with certain common-sense limitations that prevent slander, defamation of character, or threats), and this certainly wouldn't go as passable by me if it happened in a non-Police/Nanny State like the United States (I know, we are already well on our way there in a hand-basket, but some of us are trying to prevent that or reverse that trend).

Bad pervy Troll deserves public scorn, but if he was just Trollin' without slandering or threatening anyone, then that's just how some sick folks roll. Acknowledge, Accept, Move On rather than Arrest, Charge, and Sentence.

This should serve as a reminder to everybody, not just trolls, to protect and cherish your anonymity on these tubes.

In the U.S. Even though you have freedom of speech you don't have the right to abuse communications for malicious purposes....

Likewise there are all sorts of public nuisance laws

I don't see how this is any different... Good on the magistrate

well, if a guy can stand outside an abortion clinic with a sign, 'the mother should be aborted along with the baby',
what is the real difference?

I guess I am failing to see the similarity. What does one have to do with the other?

Wow you are actually right! And here I was, taking the example of the other hater in another thread, that had lost his job for being an extreme Gay-hater.
Oh the irony, talk about the haters repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot, huh?

well, the guy in the article claimed this on the net.

unless i'm missing something he's not calling for the death of anyone, while abortion protestors carry signs that do.
the sign i mentioned was one i saw outside a clinic i was driving by in albuquerque.
which is worse?
calling for someones death, or just being a sick f*&k?
