The US has announced a $2bn (£1.3bn) package of military and security aid to Pakistan on the final day of the latest Washington-Islamabad strategic talks.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton unveiled the five-year deal, which is subject to Congressional approval.
But the Obama administration will make clear it expects Islamabad to do more in the fight against Islamic militants.
(Reuters) - Pakistan is being kept out of efforts by the Afghan government and the United States to end nearly a decade of war with the Taliban, which could be a sign of Washington's mistrust of Islamabad's intentions.
NATO and Afghan officials have confirmed preliminary contacts between President Hamid Karzai's government and the Taliban, whose leadership is based in Pakistan's northwestern frontier province and the Baluchistan capital of Quetta.
Washington wants security and peace in Afghanistan under its own terms as it eyes a long-term regional presence and only backs talks between Kabul and the Taliban to spread confusion among insurgents, an ex-Taliban diplomat said.
Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, who once served as ambassador for the ousted Taliban government, said comments by NATO and US officials that militants had recently opened contacts with Kabul were merely propaganda to divide Taliban leaders. (Reuters)
The Taliban statement says they “refute these futile claims and baseless propaganda and believes that it is a part and parcel of a regular psychological warfare of the enemy.” President Karzai had confirmed the talks just two days ago.
Karzai’s claims had been quickly repudiated by US envoy Richard Holbrooke, who insisted the media had made up reports of the peace talks entirely. Which adds another layer of confusion, as NATO officials claimed today that they were “aiding” the talks.

Bush set thousands of deadlines for withdrawal in Iraq, and then extended, and then extended, and then extended, and then extended.
Even the latest withdrawal was BS, thousands of US troops are still in Iraq, that is not a withdrawal.
What the Taliban want is clear, that they want all occupying forces out, so if the US seriously wants to get out, it has to say it in a manner which the enemy would believe. Simple announcements to keep the US population happy is not gonna cut it in this case.
[thousands of deadlines] was sarcasm.. but you get what I mean

Even though we pay for this empire, it surely doesn't benefit us, at least in any major ways. Sure, we pay a little less for gasoline, but that certainly doesn't equal out the costs. At a time when our towns are trying to decide which educational programs we need to cut from our childrens' schools, we are handing billions of dollars over to other countries. This is insane.
