Why is it okay to discriminate against gay people?

It just doesn't make any sense to me - this is accepted negative behavior.

If you talk negatively about black people - you're a racist - you can get fired or sued for discriminating against them.

If you talk negatively about jews - you're a racist - you can get fired or sued for discriminating against them.

If you talk negatively about pretty much anything you can get fired or sued or accused of being a bigot/racist/etc.

And there seems to be a double standard - if you fire someone for being gay at the workplace they can sue you - but our country, military and our President are OPENLY against gays in the military. They are flat-out discriminating and showing the same kind of behavior that would get people sued, yet that's where we are.

I find it really interesting that we have a black (Or at least part black) president and he is actively discriminating and opposing gays in the military, yet his race was just as discriminated against for hundreds of years. If it weren't for "CHANGE" (His favorite word!) then he would still be among the discriminated and hated (though it's still up for debate as to how equal they are even in 2010).

And I use the word 'black' because African-American is a retarded term.

First of all, the label "African American" is the dumbest, most persistently used phrase in our vernacular. Every time you call someone an "African American," you're making at least two assumptions about the person:

1. That the person is an American. For example, if you saw Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Operative from the movie Serenity) walking along on a street, you would probably think he's an "African-American"

...which is fine, except for one small detail: this man is British, which makes you a presumptuous cock.

2. That the person is African (because it's inconceivable that black people could come from Haiti, India, Trinidad, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Australia, or Jamaica). Nevermind that; BLACK PEOPLE ONLY COME FROM AFRICA.

Not to mention that every time you give a black person the distinction of being "African American" out of a mixed group, you're making an assumption about an entire continent; not everyone from Africa is black. I guarantee all you politically correct morons out there have never called a white person an African American. Of course you could avoid all these problems by using the same standards on blacks as you would on whites by simply assuming that all whites are from Africa just as you do for all blacks, but that might be too forward, and in a polite society like ours, people would be all too pleased to point out which of the 192 countries you didn't guess they were actually from. Thanks Maddox!

Not only that, but to all the gay-haters out there: Why DON'T you want gay people in the military? You should be stoked that they'll have a much greater chance at getting killed while at war and then you won't have to worry about them 'ruining the sanctity of marriage!'

And does having gay people in the military ruin 'the sanctity of war' or something? If you are stuck in a fox hole with a gay guy who is in love with you, he's going to try a LOT harder to save your life!

Just doesn't make sense. At least we know how to legally dodge the draft. Speak with a heavy lisp and make comments about bedazzling your BDU's and pinch your CO's left butt cheek.

First off, its not at all ok.
Second it has alot to do with what other people will think if you don't discriminate.

For example say a group of five men in the army are harrasing another gay comrade. Now lets say 2 or 3 of those guys don't actually want to harrass the gay indivisual but do so because of peer pressure.

Sure its wrong but it mostly is coming from how people are raised and they are brainwashed to believe a certain way.

It is NOT OK to discriminate against gays.

If Obama is worried that gays in the forces would jump on anyone, he needs a big rethink.

Firstly, most gays are pretty discriminating.

Secondly, most sex crimes are committed by heterosexual men - sorry, but that is the truth.

When did you last hear of a gay person raping and/or murdering someone?

Please don't get into the priest issue - that is a separate issue.

It's not, thats the whole point.

People are to busy worrying what others are doing so that they do no have to look at themselves.

Here is the problem as I see it, I could be wrong. Its a complication. I am not sure what it was like when women were first allowed ot join the military but i am assuming they were housed in separate quarters. By allowing gays in the military, you in away adding two new "genders." This means they need to have four separate housing quarters instead of two. At least that's what I think they should do. But the government would rather waste their money on useless things than to help solve a problem.
Of course I have no idea what military life is like, but thats my opinion.

Are you serious? I wont go into the "priest issue" but truth is that every time a pedophile case comes up, 99% of the men involved are accused of raping little boys... and then theres the "priest issue" which is... well pretty much the same (maybe you dont consider them as "gay men raping little boys"?).

Either way... I cant believe yer serious

The point I was trying to make here is that little boys and priests are not in the armed forces.

Give gays a break.

Priests most definitely are in the military. They're called chaplains.

In response to the OP, if gays don't want to be 'discriminated' against, then don't be gay. It's a choice. You aren't born gay, like blacks are born black.

I honestly believe it is the most cowardly of behavior to discriminate against anyboy, whether its race, their sex, or even their sexual preferences. I think some people are scared of anything different and that means different types of people as well.

Its sad but true, there are people that are so small minded still in todays society. They would happily talk to you if they met you and like you, but then find out you are gay and completely change their mind about you.

It's a CHOICE? You seem to think you have some sort of insight into being gay, could you please tell me how you come to the conclusion that its a choice! I knew from a VERY early age that I was not into girls and that was NOT BY CHOICE but by design. I grew up in a very narrow minded community in a time when the word gay wasn't even being used yet to describe my "condition". I knew I was different and I knew it was "wrong" according to everyone else around me but I also knew then as I know now it was no choice.
And let me tell you something, if I had had a choice I would never have chosen to be gay, to be hated, to be laughed at, to be excluded because of something I had NO CHOICE over!
You stand in judgement of something you know NOTHING about!

Sorry to disagree,

You are born gay. Do you think people choose to be gay?

Absolutely not.

Also, to all the people who have pointed out that chaplains are in wars - these people are good warriors.

I don't agree with the life choice, I think its wrong, and I will never accept it as being "natural"

however! my brother is gay and he knows of my thoughts on the matter , but he also knows I love and respect him for who he is. It is his life, and if he's happy, I am happy.

My brother and I are pretty much best friends, and he's my favourite sibling, there is nothing I wouldn't do for him.

Just because someone doesnt agree with something, does not make them "Racist, a bigot or ignorant"

We all have different beliefs and opinions and EVERYONE deserves to be treated with respect.

I don't use my different beliefs (Christian - Non Denominational) to hate, or cause anger, I don't ridicule , nor do I belittle.

I would just like to ask you, JJ,

Have you ever asked your brother if it was a choice?

Here you go guys, I read this ages ago. Basically, a few scientists have been asked if there is a gay gene. Its quite interesting.

www.narth.com...

I am not bothered either way. It wouldnt make any difference to me if anybody i knew told me they were gay. They are still themselves and i obviously like them for who they are or they wouldn't be my friends.

Its ok as they do not bring people into this world. If your straight male you can commit any crime you want within reason, and the police will not target you, but if your not into females, the police will hound you for life if anyone makes up anything about you.

Oh yes! we have had many debates over the years. All I can say is...He believes he was born that way. Whereas I am on the fence.

I would watch him dance around the room, doing ballet and jazz, when we were younger, he was very feminine in his behaviour and mannerisms even as a child. I noticed right away and had the inkling he was gay. It might seem like I am stereotyping here but that's just how it was and who he is.

He dated a few girls in high school, but only because he was afraid to "come out" as he so puts it.

My entire family are Christians, and I thought this would pull us all apart, but it did the opposite.

He came out to our older brother, as he was frightened to tell our father, but in the end our dad sat him down for talks , tried to talk him out of it and then accepted that his son was gay. My father won't allow his boyfriends to stay over, but will invite them in for dinner and treats them with respect. Our father still tries to tell his son about his "sin" and sometimes I do too, and my brother listens as do we to his thoughts and opinions on the matter.

Overall we are very close, and I love him, we just "agree to disagree"

My brother has gone on to get an agent and is now dancing in theatre productions and TV in London! I am very proud of him!

Well,

That just proves your brother was born gay.

All you need is to love him, which you do - this is proof that people are born gay.

It is not a choice.

Thats quite an interesting way of looking at it. Im not sure I personally have seen much evidence of that but i have heard people mention sinilar things before. The gay population seem to stick together where im from and they generally seem to stay out of trouble because of that. The anti-social teenagers get the blame for everything here, and rightly so
