This is ugly business for many reasons. In addition to the damage to life and property, the storm has severe economic implications for the Philppines and other locations in Asia:

Philippines may lose 600,000 tons of rice from typhoon.

As the world's biggest rice importer, increased needs in the Philippines will push prices higher globally. Anecdotal evidence I'm hearing about the Asian rice harvest this year is a bit disturbing anyway, even without the storm. Moreover, all the dirty business in currency wars and currency manipulation could very easily lead to a flight to commodities (already happening, actually) and a repeat or worse of the 2008 grain price spikes across Asia and Africa and (to a lesser degree in terms of severity) the developed world.

Batten down the hatches. Be safe, everybody.
