Super typhoon Megi 'biggest in 20 years'

www.abc.net.au

The Philippines has declared a state of calamity in a northern province after super typhoon Megi made landfall, killing at least one man, cutting off power and communications, evacuating thousands and forcing flight cancellations.

Typhoon Megi or Juan as it known locally is one big mother of a storm with winds of more than 250 km/h and rainfall up to 50mm per hour ,which is to put it mildly "a lot".This will cause a lot of suffering for many people who are already struggling to survive in the provinces and rely heavily on their food crops which no doubt will be decimated by flooding ,winds and landslides which are all to common in the rural areas.
I was in the Phillipines in August when a smaller typhoon struck and the rate at which flooding occurred was astounding as many Drains and creeks are blocked with rubbish and debris .Power cuts and flying debris was also a major problem.
My Thoughts go out to Filipino's who will be struggling with this disaster.

Those darn arrogant elitist Americans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wait a minute, I'm an American? I need to bone up on my smugness and arrogance

On topic -

What is the population of the area's this is hitting? Anyone know that area? Surely they will be needing help.

First I've heard about it. Its rare to hear the word typhoon uttered in central Ontario.

I hope they get the help they need, maybe if the world cut back on military spending we'd have a little extra cash to help out more effectively.

Most of the affected area is in the Northern provinces of Luzon about 300 km's North of Manila ,so the population would be mainly scattered rural towns.Hard to put a number on civilians but this will affect many more not in the immediate area as food crops will be hit hard. This link may give some idea

Thank you. A storm like that would likely level villages. Probably won't get news out of there for another day or two.

This time, people need to be careful who they give to. Clinton and Bushes Charity have yet to send the money to Haiti along with the money the Celebrities raised that has yet to be sent and the fake promises from all those countries that never sent their money.

Luckily I gave through a Christian Charity and they are still there doing what they can. Too bad they don't have all those billions as they would have rebuilt by now. I'll have to see if they are involved in helping out after this storm.

NASA got an image of it with their TERRA - Modis satellite.

Modis is the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, which is a very cool name for a camera if you ask me. Full image is here.

The people in provincial Philippines are remarkably tough and well suited for typhoons. Although poor by American standards, they know how to raise/grow their own food and family bonds are strong enough that they probably won't need massive government aid to survive. These people can go through storms that make Americans paralyzed with helpless fear.

This is a monster storm however, a category 5. Damage from mudslides and flooding will be severe and there will be casualties, but if there is any place in the world that would be able to withstand such a storm, it would be northern Luzon. If the typhoon re-strengthens and hits China or Vietnam, I don't even want to think how bad it can be.

It's supposed to hit Vietnam and China has already evacuated 140,000 people. Sounds like one very bad storm.

Apparently these area's are already flooded before it even hits. Bad part of the world to be in right now. My prayers go out to them.

I know what you mean. It is horrible that no one has ever been told of the devastating effects of the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 striking Thailand. Oh, and I'm sure you didn't hear about the disastrous 2010 earthquakes in Chile and Haiti.

Ridiculous....

To the OP, thanks for bringing this to ATS.

Yep, it is a pretty big one. i am in Hong Kong and we will have it here around Friday i assume.
But normally in Hong Kong there is nothing to worry about, just very windy and a lot of Rainfall. And mostly the
deaths which occure are related to poor fishermen which go out to the sea anyway, coz they need their catch
and that is when they drown in the storm or get missing. And of course coz the structures in the Philippines are not very secure.

But still, it looks quite different from what we have normally around here and its going to be interesting to see
how strong it will be at the end of the week closer to Hong Kong, which still could be a direct hit.

However, the typhoon slowed down at 7 kilometers and is expected to move quasi-stationary for the next 12 hours. Pagasa said “Juan” (Megi) was slowed down by a high pressure area somewhere in the South China Sea.

Link

Did somebody just push a button somewhere to create a high pressure area in order to slow down Typhoon Megi?

Yes that is horrible. I guess the fact it has been on the front page of comcast.net is a fluke( I don't read newspapers but I bet it was there also). This is a sad statement coming from you, I thought you were better then that. Every place in the world has people that don't care or read much on current world events and every place has people that do.

Good or evil, who knows.

Everything is a little of both at ATS

All I know is that is a terrible thing for those people right now, and my heart goes out to everyone whose been affected/effected.

We'll weather the weather, whether the weather is whatever!
