Yep. SDO is an astounding piece of equipment. SOHO was nice but...wow!

The OP's pics show a far more complete ring than what your pics do.

Why would you show one image in red and the other in black/white grey?

Im not an expert on the spectrum the soho uses, but showing the "newer ring" in greyscale will greatly diminish quality.

For a reasonable analysis and comparison you should show both pictures in the same color.

The images in the OP show include features other than the filaments.

The H-Alpha images show the region of the Sun's "atmosphere" above the photosphere. This is the region at which the filaments exist.

The ultraviolet images are showing regions below the photosphere as well as the "shadows" of the filaments. The dark regions in the ultraviolet images are areas which are less active than the brighter regions.

There are two (or three) unconnected filaments (one in the northern and two in the southern).

The colors are false and neither of the images are from SOHO. SOHO does not take H-alpha images.
All of the images are actually grayscaled images taken at a particular wavelength. The colors are arbitrary.

Enormous Ring is technically correct seeing that the Sun is much larger than Earth
and all the other Panets combined eh?

I , as many others, see a definite circle, not quite complete but still there.
Coincidence that many seperate features seem to form a circle? Maybe, but still a circle.

My diagnosis:

As Phage explained, the filtered visible light (H.Alpha) favors views of the solar atmosphere and its filaments, while ultraviolet light gives views of the body of the Sun. The mostly darkish ring I perceive in the UV SOHO image appears to be largely independent of the filaments or their shadows, and below them. The ring appears to span ~290 degrees of a circle, so is about 80 percent complete. There are indistinct areas within this arc that might be called gaps. This may, or may not be of the essence. An underlying phenomenon might produce a circular structure that is less than completely visible, at least as things stand now. The Sun is a dynamic body, if this 'ring' holds together, it can be assumed to be real, and have some real physical process behind it. Ross

Thank you. Who knows that there isn't something beneath the surface causing this ring.
But to say it isn't there is plain crazy..To say it's the end of the world is even crazier I might add.

The OP's thread states enormous ring developing - it does not say it has or will develop. And that after looking for the 4th or 5th time is what I see - not a complete ring.
