So what does this mean? Do solar storms or sunspots start off as rings? I guess I am not understanding the severity of what this could possibly be. I understand that it's a unique occurrence, but what makes it so malicious?

It is not only unique, it is so unique that you could say it is impossible -- that is the defination of acts of god.

A massive solar flair could whipe out every power grid on the planet and knock us into the stone age for 10 years.

With the ring developing around the sun is it not coinsidence that we had an M flare as well yesterday? As far as Ham communications go my boyfriend is picking up very clearly around the world today - much more so than usual. The flare has most likely not reached the earths atmosphere and when and if it does I would except poor communcations. Anyone care to elaborate please do - I have been watching the sun activity for 6 months - still in first grade here.

I don't understand (I'm not sun observer, though I'm interested and curious a lot) - is this something we should be afraid of? What is the worst thing it can do if it forms into something and explodes?
Is it possible that these things happen all the time INSIDE the sun, but now happened to happen on the outer side of the sun?
Personally I'm not worried - I see it as a coincidence. A nice one I must say! But maybe I'm wrong, since I don't know much about sun..

i'd laugh if it was some 'solar door' that was opening.

Could be a portal opening up the "stairway to heaven"!! , either way very interesting will keep an eye on this progress...

Oh I understand the consequences of a massive solar flare/sun storm. We would be screwed! I guess what I meant was what aspects of this ring make it a potential flare? Do flares or storms usually start out as a ring like this just on a smaller scale?

What is this strange ring that has been developing on the Sun?

Sunspot 1112, located in the southeast quadrant, has been the source of a giant filament that is currently stretching 400,000 km across the surface of the Sun.

However, today, there appears to be development of a enormous circular ring which looks to be linking with the huge magnetic filament of sunspot 1112. Most of today’s various wavelength images of the Sun all show this feature over at the SDO (Solar Dynamics Observatory) – NASA website.

Don't worry kids. NASA is going to send a landing mission to the sun in two weeks. The object wiil be to accurately measure the ring and then take some surface samples which will be returned to earth for study. A special solar powered sun buggy has been designed by a Polish company. When it was tested by NASA the chief test driver said it was really cool. Then he though that maybe he should say that it was the "hottest" thing ever instead. Well anyway, after the samples are sorted out in the lab Monsanto will be asked to develop a replacement material type which will grow just like the old, original, stuff but will be incapable of forming curved lines. That, according to the experts, will fix that.

OK now it's a couple of months later and everything went as planned. The new Monsanto stuff has been implanted in the sun and the test period is over. The circle is gone. Wow. We did it....

For those of you who were worried about the sunlight being some sort of impediment to the team's landing on the sun we will let you in on a really big secret. They went at night. Gotcha!

Now it's two years later and I guess everything is OK because the circle never came back but, much to our dismay, now a really large square is forming on the sun instead. It seems the Monsanto thingie that prevented curved lines still allowed straight lines. Well dang!

Everyone is trying to decide now what to do about it. Until they all figure it out, I'm going to relax and have a beer.

I was riding my bike and I saw a sign that said

Many scholars theorize that the bible is the transliteration of a an old message from beings from outer space (angels ie people from heaven etc)

So the most likely doom to the earth (man) are one of three things

1) Asteroid
2) the Sun
3) flooding
4) nukes

All of these result in massive fire except floods.

Follow me (off the planet) and you will have salvation and avoid fire (asteroid, sun, nuke).

Side thought.

Nothing will come of this. Its just a phenomena where two solar flares/ prominences seem have joined together to give the illusion of one circular abherration on the surface of the Sun. This shall pass and nothing will happen. Why does this have to go on for pages upon pages?

Most of the solar observers I have come across have seen today as a really great active solar viewing day but nothing out of the ordinary. There is definitely no sign of a ring in any of the H-Alpha or White Light photos I have seen, just some good old fashioned solar activity that has been sorely missed because of the minnimum.
Really, it's nothing.

News story regarding a Mega Storm/Super Typhoon heading towards the Phillipines. Theres been a mass evacuation and it's expected to hit sometime tomorrow.

It's being called 'Super Typhoon Megi'. It's expected to calm down as it goes over the Philipines but as it re-enters the ocean, it's said it will intensify as it heads for South China

I am in line with those that say no worries
This is just the normal giant atomic reactor in the sky doin its thing

Thanks so much for posting. You know its people like you who observe things like this that could be the one who save many lives by taking time out of your life to observe and share here on ats. I also want to thank all of the others here on ats as well. I am a father of 2 who does not have time right now to dish extravagent post but I am watching on a daily basis and appriciate all of you on ats who both post opinions and rebuttles as well as the OP.
