They will always say we are not ready. People think of UFO's and Aliens as being far more advanced than us. If you new aliens were invading and we couldn't do a damn thing about it, there would be mass hysteria. There are polls out there saying close to half the country believes in extraterrestrial life so if the UN or the powers that govern us know something about UFOS and if they knew that they weren't here to take over then that would put a lot of people at ease. Knowing their intentions would clear up a lot of our problems.

could be when shtf then they (the un) will say...oh wait what will we do...?
but make it seem lke they had no ideal??? we are all cattle sheeple, we must be herd-ed

Well maybe if they have been honest the whole time throughout history, we wouldn't be having this problem. How they gonna solve that issue? Probably just continue to lie about things.

Maybe TPTB fear an enraged populous after they find out that they've been lied to for all these years? OR perhaps they have suddenly realized that the ET's they have been dealing with are just plain evil? Who knows? I'm no longer chomping at the bit for disclosure. Who ever comes first be it operation bluebeam or bona fide ET's, listen to your gut about them. They may appear to be all goodness and light but that may just be a ruse.

I for one would love some alien disclosure, sadly, i don't think it will happen.
And if it will, we won't know about it until it happens, because all these predictions are useless.

Her comment "we are many years away from having a plan on the ready" (it does not seem to be a direct quote, or I missed it) was not about ET, it was in reference to the UN dealing with near Earth objects (asteroids). Listen at 17 minutes.

She also clarified her role at the Royal Society meeting.

Of course, if it's too much trouble to listen to what she actually said go ahead and believe what the UFO blogs are saying she said.

Nop she stated this for both near earth objects and ET contact. Listen at 17mins.

If I were a reporter at that press conference, the question I would ask - and the question I have really not seen addressed in any manner by anyone - is, "Can you shed any light on how or why this rumor regarding the position of Ambassador to Extraterrestrial Life got started in the first place? How might the science editor of a major UK news publication come up with the idea if nothing of the sort had ever been mentioned to him by anyone? Should we assume that the whole thing was just an example of miscommunication and journalistic ineptitude by someone who had apparently displayed enough professional competence throughout his career to achieve such a relatively prestigious position with a major national publication? Can you think of anything that may have been said by you or anyone else that might have been misinterpreted in such a manner as to result in the publication of these rumors?"

If anyone on this thread can point me toward the answers to any of these questions, I would be grateful. It seems like someone would be asking how this guy got it so wrong, but nobody appears to be doing that. His report was really just a step or two away from the New York Times or some equally elite paper publishing a story claiming something like "Secretary General Says UN Has Been In Secret Contact with Intelligent ET Life for Three Decades". If such a story were published, and then we found out it was not true, wouldn't anyone be curious what exactly led to its publication in the first place?

To be fair, is there anybody who could possibly be prepared for disclosure. Its ok being on here and saying i can't wait for disclosure and we want it but have no idea what it could bring. We have no idea what the aliens could look like, whether they are hostile. I think there will be a great deal to take in. A hell of a lot to learn.
Exciting though. I personally hope it happens soon, i just hope its all they we have all wished for.

To tell you the truth i would flip the buck out " if " ebe's unviel them selfs,
but if any govern-body say hey by the way, here's Johny. i will laugh my bass off and then lite a fat stogie with a deep inhale....oh yeah

:EDIT:
I dont think the subject of this topic was about humanity as a whole is unprepared, but its the UN which represents us as a species is rather un-prepared for disclosure.

are they not?

I felt sorry for her and feel her frustration.

Here is a woman whom is acting as single point of contact for all national interests in space which includes some serious issues such as space junk, mission collaboration and nuclear use in space etc...

And all the questions she gets are about aliens.....

I mean come on!!

I really felt for her.

Piggy-backing a bit on Phage's comments that she stated the UN has no protocols for how to handle the discovery of alien life....Doesn't that bother anyone?

We know there have been studies. The Brookings Report is one such example (and recommends not telling anyone).

I do agree though, what do you base such a response on? It would really depend on the nature of the discovery. Still though, there are enough common idea scenarios to warrant some preliminary plans, and I can't imagine that somewhere, such plans haven't been devised. They simply aren't public. (nor should they be, really)

For example:

1) Detection of a confirmed ET signal via SETI
2) Detection of non-sentient life on another celestial body
3) Expressed desire of an alien representative wishing to address the planet
4) Motherships hovering over major cities

etc., etc.

There are many different groups tasked with even the most unlikely scenario plans (better to be prepared and have it never happen, than have it happen, and not be prepared). Heck, there's probably even some planning in the event of a Zombie outbreak, for all we know.

Of course, should the UN really be given such a task? Probably not. Not to mention, they would be hard pressed to keep the scientists making such a find, from talking about it.

I would say the reason the questions were about aliens is because that is what is on everyone's mind.

The title of the event at the Royal Society meeting was
"Towards a scientific and societal agenda on extra-terrestrial life"

And 1 part of that was...
"Extra-terrestrial life and arising political issues for the UN agenda"

royalsociety.org...

While she may say 'bacteria" the rest of the real world translates" extra-terrestrial life" as something more substantial. With that NASA scientist saying 100% chance of life on Gliese and the recent CNN carrying that disclosure press conference, why would you be surprised that the news media is so gung ho with questions about ET? Asteroids and space junk? That won't sell many papers until one takes out a city..

I agree with Gazrok... after all these years of space travel, the Brookings report and even that law that was around on how to deal with ET... I find it shocking that they say there is no policy on how to deal with it in case ET does land

The "Extraterrestrial Exposure" law was removed from the CFR in 1991, NASA having determined that it had "served its purpose" and was "no longer in keeping with current policy," and is no longer in force.

67.19.222.106...

Full text of the old law... (at the bottom)
www.v-j-enterprises.com...

So the UN has no policy to deal with possible contact and NASA says quarantine is "no longer in keeping with current policy,"

Are we really that stupid?

And if anyone really believes that after all the fuss lately that the UN wasn't expecting to get barraged by ET question... I have some nice swamp land in Arizona I need to unload

I think it would be logical to have Dr. Othsman on this panel as she is the person that interfaces globally with those nations with a stake in the space race.

But lets make this very clear... She was appointed for reason of good communications here on earth with earthlings of different nations as a single point of contact.

She was not appointed as the UN's authority on ET or to be the single point of contact for alien civilisations.

I think her role is very important for our future as our nations increase space exploration, each nation has to ensure that they are adhering to the wishes of all nations.

I repeat... Dr. Othsman Role is NOT to be the point person for disclosure.

Give the woman a break and look at the real work that UN-SPIDER does.

UN-SPIDER Mission Statement...

mission statement: "Ensure that all countries and international and regional organizations have access to and develop the capacity to use all types of space-based information to support the full disaster management cycle".
