Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

Welcome them with open arms to the land of Liberty!

America was made by immigrants, all of us who aren't Native Americans, are foreigners to these shores. We should welcome the poor, the ones seeking asylum and everyone else trying to escape oppression and find hope.

While us as Americans complain about how bad things are here just always remember to millions around this world we are that beacon in the distance, we are their hope for a better future, this is the land of freedom, this is the land of opportunity. We must remember this and strive to make this beacon blink even brighter, shine even stronger and welcome those who seek a better life with open arms.

It is high time we make the reforms within our society, within our economy and within our government so that all Americans and all immigrants have the chance to live the American dream based on hard work, rugged individualism and a sense community.

It's a nice message for the idealists, and may have been applicable over 150 or so years ago, but realistically uncontrolled immigration is not possible in the modern world.

I approve of people emigrating freely between countries, but too much widespread immigration too quickly, always has negative consequences to the social fabric of a country.

Also, American Indians are foreigners to the Americas. They are immigrants, too; in fact, extremely recent immigrants in terms of human history.

i dont understand. do they not already have that chance?

or does "reform" suggest tailoring to their likings?

perhaps if they want a say in the process, they should go through that process like everybody else.

if the current process is too difficult in this day and age, then perhaps they should have attempted to come sooner.(like everybody else)

I applaud your sentiments but any freedom here is nominal and illusory at best. The United States has been under a declared state of "National Emergency" since 9/14/2001, renewed every 2 years (including Obama).

Currently, the President has the power to: seize property, organize and control the means of production, seize commodities, assign military forces abroad, seize and control all means of communication and transportation.regulate the operation of private enterprise, restrict travel and institute martial law.

Yes, you and I have freedom for the moment but know that it can be taken away at anytime for any pretext. Is that freedom? Is this what the huddled, tired masses of the world want for themselves and their children?

Restore the Constitution as the supreme law of the land in America and I would agree that we should welcome immigrants. At the moment the only role they are playing is but that of another card in the divide and conquer deck of the PTB. Human tools, if you will.

Knowing that, can you in good conscience tell them to "come to America, the land of freedom and opportunity"?

I clearly stated that we must first reform the system. Reform society, reform the economy and reform the government. As of right now things are bad, they have been worse though, but we are still in serious trouble. That is why I advocated reforming our nation before adopting that policy.

The US is supposed to be a nation of LAW. That includes immigration laws. People coming here who want to work and better themselves is great but it still is ridiculous to throw open the doors without any order or guidelines. Those laws should protect the immigrants as well as the US citizens.

I can think of nothing worse than getting dumped in New York City knowing no one, not knowing the language, having no job and having absolutely no idea of what to do or where to turn for help.

Yes, that is the plaque on the statue of liberty. And it is the ideal that America is supposed to live up to, unfortunately so many xenophobes exist that don't like "feriners" and think that anyone that has an accent is evil. They don't realize that the propaganda they have been swallowing all comes from white supremacist groups.

The immigration debate is a simple one. Lets take it away from the large to the small and see if your solution works for you in concept.

If you believe that the US should simply let anyone who wants to come here in to the country, regardless of their skills, criminal history, health, language, cultural identity or motivations, why not take the same principal and apply it to your home? If what is "ours" is really "theirs", why not put your money where your mouth is and go down to the local homeless shelter or tent city and hand out your address on cards and invite all of those folks on over.

How about if you were to come home and just find them in your house? Is that a problem? I guess not if you believe that everyone is entitled to what you have.

This country is broke. The citizens of this country have voted for folks who have driven us all into debt to the extent that it will likely never be paid back fully and that we will be slaves to federal and state debt for the rest of our lives. Our infrastructure is in terrible condition, we have cities that are not unlike third-world hell-holes and we have millions of citizens who are unable to feed their families or put roofs over their heads. That is the necessary priority of the government of this or any other country.

Were the above mentioned problems solved, lets begin a discussion of immigration policy. Until they are solved, immigration should be stopped and every illegal rounded up and deported, regardless of circumstances.

Yes this is true, many Americans aren't white, but the propaganda around the anti immigrant movement is derived from white supremacist groups. Specifically groups associated with, John Tanton.

Well, with that logic, I don't want you in my house, does that mean you have to leave America? Apparently to you even homeless people aren't Americans. How fascist of you.

The homeless are absolutely Americans. I also don't want them in my house. This government should be doing what it can to enable them to actually have a home, rather than throwing cash at immigrants. Charity begins at home.

As far as the White vs. Color business, that is a tired, old canard that is tossed up by the left when logic fails.

I can't believe the entire anti-immigrant movement is based on propaganda from white supremacist groups.

Anti-immigrant feeling is something that's found all over the world, in countries of all races and cultures.

In fact, some of the worst and deadliest anti-immigration violence has come in African countries, between the local inhabitants of a country and immigrants from other African countries.

While I'm sure there is some racial motivation to much of the anti-immigrant movement in all countries; you appear to be overplaying it's importance in relation to the current anti-illegal immigrant fervour that is currently found in the USA.

Anti-immigrant feeling is strongest during times of financial hardship, so it's no wonder that it seems to be quite prominent at the moment in various countries.

I see, because they are homeless, they should be deported, because even though they are Americans, because they are homeless, to you they don't deserve to live in America.

This government should be doing what it can to enable them to actually have a home, rather than throwing cash at immigrants. Charity begins at home.

I see, and your idea of charity apparently is the mass deportation of Natural Born Americans based solely on their housing situation, you said it, you don't want these people in your house. You were using your house as an analogy of America, and since you don't want homeless people in your house, you don't want homeless people in America, so therefore you want to deport natural born Americans from America based solely on their housing situation.

As far as the White vs. Color business, that is a tired, old canard that is tossed up by the left when logic fails.

Well, let's see, apparently I am very wrong, you not only want to deport just illegals, but poor Natural Born Americans as well. I thank you for the correction. Although it still doesn't make you any less fascist.

There is a solution that has been in existence forever... Imprison those that illegally employ people that are here illegally..... Can you imagine the damage enforcement of such a law would do to the righteous neo cons and there representatives in government office?

Com e on now. I never said that I wanted homeless Americans deported and you know it. I am saying that this government should do what it can to assist Americans, not continue with this foolishness of supporting law breaking illegals.

We should let in those who are healthy, do not have a criminal past and can pass a test on American History and Government. Meet those three simple conditions and we will hand you your SS Number. Simple as that really.

America was founded by immigrants, I never heard George Washington say to not let in foreigners. In fact foreigners fought to make America a country, they fought for us even though they weren't American citizens. Michael Kovats is one example of a Hungarian cavalry officer who sent a letter to Benjamin Franklin letting him know he will be fighting for America against the British in the Revolutionary War.

Immigrants have just as much right to be here as you, me or your neighbor.

Your logic was as such...

America is your "house"...

You said you don't want homeless people in your "house"...

Therefore you don't want homeless people in America.

So, what other groups of people do you want "rounded up and deported"? What other groups of people aren't deserving enough to live in your "house"?

1st, We have Immigrants, people wanting to come to this country and make a better life for themselves, to you, not deserving to live in your "house"

2nd, Homeless Natural Born Americans, you don't wan't them in your "house" either. Apparently socioeconomic status is enough for you to deport "undesirables"

Who else is unworthy to live in your "house"? Gays? Blacks? Liberals?

Sounds simple and fair to me. But better pass it by dolphinfan, they may not want those people in their "house"

Illegal immigrants have once already shown a lack of respect towards American laws, namely the immigration law. What makes you think they'd respect any other law American has?

They don't. That's the hard truth. They're not here to make a better life for themselves, they're here to earn as much money as they can so they can live like kings in Mexico.

Go educate yourself. www.usillegalaliens.com...

I have never understood how a person claiming they are not motivated by racism would see illegal immigrants as the root of the immigration problem..... Why is it that rich white guys that benefit from the cheap source of labor that is supplied by hard working brown skinned people they are exploiting never held accountable?..... If you are a racist just go ahead and admit it and still do what is right by cutting off the suppliers of jobs to brown skinned people with Spanish accents by putting the rich white guys that are profiting from their labor in jail. You could send them to Mexico to live like kings and let the wet backs stay if you truly wanted what was in the best interest of the country.

There have been States that have tried to pass laws about holding corporations accountable for hiring illegals and they got shot down.

People don't have a problem with immigration. They have a problem with 'illegal immigartion'. With illegal immigration, people do not have their backgrounds checked nor are they checked for diseases. So along with the nice folks just wanting a better life, we also have the criminals who murder, rape and steal, the pedophiles and gang members. Our Country has laws that are supposed to protect its citizens like any other Country and for good reasons.

There is also much controversy about millions of citizens being un-employed and illegals holding jobs. It is alll fine and well that illegals wish to have a better life, but citizens themselves are falling through the cracks and have families to support. There is much resentment for the illegals who get benefits while so many of our citizens are but a few dollars above the poverty level and therefore denied any help whatsoever. A few measely dollars will in no way pay for the medical coverage or medicines they may need in order to survive.
