Imagine there's a huge truck workers' strike, nuclear attack, drought, ecological disaster, and the supermarket shelves are empty. What will you and your family do next?

How will you survive? What will you do in this scary situation?

Where will you get food? Will you hunt? And what about water? What about protection? What about long-term survival?

What would happen if a natural, civil or economic disaster prevented us from growing, transporting and importing food?

Food prices would rise and supermarket shelves would go empty.

Within three days there'd be no food left in most people's homes.

Chaos and anarchy would break out. Thousands (if not millions) would starve.

Are you prepared for such a situation? Do you realize how close our technology-driven agricultural industry is to experiencing such a crisis?

In fact, it is because our food system is so sophisticated, integrated and advanced that it is so vulnerable.

The thought that the globe's leading nations (like the United States and Canada) could suffer even a temporary food shortage (no less a prolonged food crisis) seems unthinkable to most people. Of course, that's what the government prefers.

SOURCE

They're offering a free ebook on what would happen if the sh!t hit the fan (and how easily sh!t can hit the fan in this interdependent world), I strongly suggest you read it if you're interested in survival.

So bottom line, if it happens, will you make it to the grocery store in time? And what's next???

Fortunately the solution to over-population and starvation are one and the same.

Eat People !!

We could, but soon the game and fish will run out because in many areas they're in limited numbers and our system is dependent on a constant stream of farm meat, animal births and slaughters. When that is distrupted there won't be enough resources to feed people. How long would it last... A week, a month, a lifetime? Will there be food drops or will there be a cull?

Chaos and anarchy would break out.

I know you this is a quote from another source.. but it always goes and pisses me off when "chaos" is always equated with anarchy.. sorry, but I couldn't resist.

"Chaos" would ensue because people are trained to believe that the system will always take care of everything, not because of the state of anarchy that they found themselves in, but because of the system of government that has now failed them.. "chaos" would ensue because of government, and the illusion that they have given their people that they can and will sustain..

As another user said, go hunting and fishing. Grow and harvest vegetables, herbs, fruit and nut! Scottish Thistles have a tasty nut at it's root, very very healthy for you too and there are thousands of thistles all over Ireland.

Well, I would have a month. We have already stocked our pantry with dried and canned goods. I advise everyone to do this and then live off of fresh and frozen food until they need to revert to food stores.

given a month's time, well, I could figure out if I need to raid the pharmacies and hardware stores and move to the mountains or just hunt the squirrels in the area (although the hawks would be a big competition)

Learn how to find and identify edible food/water in nature/urban environment
also how to prepare and preserve that food.
Survival Knowledge is priceless …."Learn it now"
Also have an emergency meet up or communication plan amongst family and friends.
Personally I do not know what I would need to do until I know what is needed, as it all depends on the circumstances.

xsheep is right, if you cannot sustain yourself on what is out in the woods and fields you will be in trouble. Store shelves would empty quickly and roving bands would be on the streets looking for easy pickings. The first weeks might be the worst as it would take time for people to band together for protection. Forget the police and national guard, there aren't enough and they would go home to take care of their families anyway.
Guns, dogs, bars on windows and booby traps will be your best protection.
Night vision equipment will be priceless as many gangs would choose to strike at night.

It breaks down to 2 possible scenarios:
1) stay at home and defend it or -
2) move to the woods and try to remain unseen.

Most people will cling to their homes and belongings since they don;t know how to survive outdoors. This could also be their doom to stay though it may not be any better in the woods.

Safety in numbers.
Have a meeting place in an emergency for family and close friends. Pool your resources and weapons.

What role the government will play is unknown. Will they be the rescuers or the enemy?
I have as many questions as anyone even though I've been preparing for just such a scenario for 30 years.

I'd go out into my shed....enough to last me and the kids a couple of months.

Plenty of bottled water in the 5 litre containers, and if all else fails i have a many streams and rivers around me and a Katadyn Pocket filter that is good for 100,000 litres.

Should last me a while.

CX.

I would probably starve to death eventually. Or dehydrate or soemthing miserable along with most of modern humanity spoiled to a consumerism society. I would reckon if one could hold out and survice the first year there would be far less predators and the like because most of us will have perished.

I'll die.

I have special diet requirements now. I'll die a slow death from starvation. Nothing that I can eat will be available. It'll be survival of the fittest. The health issues I have now would mean I'd be dead within 2 weeks.

My family, on the other hand, can eat whatever they want.
And we have taken precautions to carry them for a while.

3 simple words.

HUNT - KILL - EAT

All the preperation in the world can not stop the eventual need for physical survival.

Very good point.
I wouldn't worry so much about stores as I would utilities (water, electricity)
Here's a few more of the things that most people don't realize...
People have pantries full of food right now.
I have a feeling that alot of people are stocking up.
BUT: in the situation of stores emptying shelves, I believe a few things will take place.
Senior citizens and babies will be the first to suffer.
Without food, or water, they cannot roam the forests to get it.
It takes 7-10 days for the Human body to die of dehydration.
That's not a long time...
I'd say as long as there's a great water supply where ever you live, you can survive for a while.
Humans are resilient beings.

The enveloping chaos that would ensue will be devastating to everyone.
Not one single person that I see (besides ATS readers) has a CLUE about what they would do in this situation.
Everyone I know relies on store-bought items 100% (fast food too).
There are a few farmers and mini-gardeners, but nothing serious.
So I would say that in this situation....people will revert to survival mode.
Anything goes.

If hell breaks loose.. I know how to purify water to make it drinkable.. without electricity or anything.. Its fairly simple..

You know someone who hunts so they can get food.. I plan on starting a garden this spring so I will know how to garden..

I am hoping to learn how to hunt this winter but I don't know about that..
I need to learn how to make a shelter out of 2 twigs, a gum band and some duct tape..

Other than that I should be fine..

I've got brown rice and black beans in bulk already. Also have a ton of b-vitamins and lbs of vit-c, so even if I needed to work off of water, I could make it a month in starvation no problem. I simply don't forsee things getting incredibly bad in the next few years. What the U.S. will go through this run around is an artificial collapse, and it's cake compared to what lies down the road. True collapse won't come for some years yet, maybe even a few decades off. That's when we experience major ecosystem collapses, and I think it's likely that civilization will collapse as well. That's truly when shtf, and when having an underground bunker to raise a family and keep things going for a full generation in seclusion will be ideal. Until then, just get creative and keep your common sense.

Put everything i learned from Man Vs Wild into action. I'll eat Pigeons, Alligators, Crocodiles, Frogs, Snakes, and Turtles. Surviving is simple if there is no pain in the but Martial Law. You also have to adjust really quickly and not allow your head to be filled with negative thoughts.
