I'll second that motion.

they have paid the price in blood birth defects and concrete shrouded gamma radiating wreckage...

Plus if they decide to do it it's not like Iran we couldn't stop them if we tried ...

well not without turning one of the worlds major industrial backbones into a fallout caked wasteland bringing an end to the digital age with our own act of attempting to stop them...

Ultimate in Catch 22 situations the only sane course of action is to let them do what they're going to do and then send a strongly worded diplomatic note conveying our displeasure after they hold the press conference showing us their hypersonic transforming battle robot squadron during prime time in DC LOL

Not to mention their current ramping up and the talks about militarization are a direct result of things our government has done including deliberatelly telling the Japanese government that they need to shoulder more of their own defensive arrangements ... we literally a few years ago told them they needed to repudiate their non aggression pledges and start building a real military not a defense force

Some posters seem to think that China is readying to strike at Japan.
I'am trying to understand why they would have this as an objective, can someone give me a short rational reason for this.
I understand the history between the two nations, but can not see what China would have to gain.
Thanks in anticipation.

I do believe the rationale breaks down like this....

In the last several months relations have broken down between the two nations with china now stopping all Rare Earth exports to japan effectivelly crippling their tech industry.
(CHINA is basically the ONLY supplier of rare earths)

Then there's the disputed island chains and the FX market battles (currency devaluation battles sort of a central bank version of limbo with the loser being the one who's currency is worth the most!!)

And then there is the escalating sinking feeling many of us have that we're about to experience dunkirk Duke Ferdinand and the rest of the madness inducing tipping points that sent the otherwise logical world into the last TWO world wide conflagrations. Plus I do believe japan talking about it is our governments way of telling china that if they URINATE In our breakfast products by nuking up people we don't like we'll Urinate in their rice bowls and we just drank a WHOLE MESS A GATORADE!!!

Basically Very ugly situation with lots of variables and no one manning the E brake.

PS: Oh and as this thread has so eloquently proven the Political Correctness factor alone means our dog in the fight (japan) is much less likely to get anything but token protest from the western governments and more importantly MEDIA. Whereas their dog in the fight (IRAN) well even their neighbors hate them.... I think this is one of those my dad can kick the crap out of your dad situations on an international relations scale.

Plus as we've seen multi millenial hatred and animosity is not always LOGICAL.... (palestinians throw ROCKS at TANKS) NUFF SAID

Thanks very much for the summary Roguetechie, much appreciated, and I have to agree with your DOGS analogy.

I do wonder how the Japanese army would perform this time around without the imperial flag to rally too.
Being a Brit I have very mixed feelings on this subject.

Well short of getting Michael vick to do the commentary on the blow by blow on this one it couldn't be more obvious that this is Power Bloc politics...

But honestly man I stand by my assessment that this press release means they want people to know they have nukes and they will use them if they have to ... especially combined with the initial DOD contact more than 4 years ago telling the Japanese they needed to repudiate their self imposed armament limitations and that they would get support from our government if they chose to... this means there has been 6 years or so of lead time on a project that would quite literally as the article said take weeks to 6 months to implement.

so in my humble opinion this is meant as the warning flag... and that is why it was released through a blogger.... Bloggers are now a vital part of the REAL POLITICK scene for deniable information dispersal and other psyop type games.

just because they don't have an imperial flag doesn't mean if push come to shove they wouldn't be just as tough if not tougher in the next war they are in. they have never truly give up the warrior spirit they've just expanded to other areas.

Thats a very interesting point, but I do disagree.

The Japanese introduced the western world to suicide bombing. This was done on the back of fanaticism.

Their belief in the devinity of their Emperor and the superiority of their race were the building blocks for that fanaticism. The allies dismantled that belief system at the end of WW2, so it is difficult for me to believe that the average Japanese soldier nowadays would willfully allow himself to be cannon fodder for someone elses political aims,my point being that a fanatical imperial army will always be superior to an army despatched by democratic states who's troops have the ability to question why they are fighting. The Japanese i believe no longer see the world through the eyes of medieval men and consequently would not perform as they did during the last confliguration.

I would be interested to hear any thoughts on this from native japanese people.

If there is any nation on Earth that I would trust the most with a nuclear device it would have to be Japan.

Knowing first hand the devastation it causes, they would be the last to use this type weapon. I'm kind of glad that Japan is coming around to realize that protesting something that would surely be a deference is not in their best interest.

Japan is already a defascto nuclear state. If they so want, they could have many weapons in just months.

Whats to stop China making a pre-emptive strike against Japan to stop them from aquiring nuclear weapons?

US is planning the same thing with Israel against Iran as we all know.

Also like mentioned, Burma (myanmar) is on a nuclear weapons path aswell....its not very publicly discussed. That nation is getting help from North Korea.

Now picture this......China, North Korea and Burma (myanmar) side together against the rest of South East Asia......

Troop Numbers By Country

Myanmar - 513,250 Total troops
North Korea - 9,495,000 Total Troops

China - 16,455,000 Total Troops

US - 2,455,837 Total Troops

Even if you add all the allies troops you would still struggle to match the strength of these three in Numbers.

Say they got together and attacked collectively their surrounding nations for their own cause.....I beleive they could take over most of south east asia in a short amount of time.....Japan would be a sitting duck as would Thailand and South Korea.....

US would either let it slide or nuke a large portion of South East Asia.....do you really think they would lay waste to such a large area of land and number of people?

The last thing you want is a Asian Arms Race, because this would be the likely result.
