"Las Vegas suffering like never before"

"The nation's gambling capital is staggering under a confluence of economic forces that has sent Las Vegas into what officials describe as its deepest economic rut since casinos first began rising in the desert there in the 1940s..."

Well this sucks.

I happen to reside in Vegas >_>

So, first off.. I'm seeing a LOT of construction, at least since people started saying we're "recovering" from the recession. So much construction that traffic everywhere is horrible..

But it seems nobody is working on them anymore!
Bridges half-way complete, road blocks still up but day and night I see nobody working on anything?

The vast majority of our city is founded off of taxing the ridiculous amounts of casinos/hotels/clubs/t1tty bars/entertainment w.e's/etc places that the mobs and/or billionaire investors laid down in this tourist **TRAP** of a town..

Continue to read on in the main link provided, and it goes on to state that the result of the recession has collapsed the construction industry all-together. This is of October 2nd.

Kayso when the hell is THIS gonna happen? "The Future of Las Vegas" LOL

Here's a link to the current status of construction in Las Vegas

Does the collapse of the casinos, along with everything else around here, mean we don't get roads/school funds?

As if our school system isn't bad enough?!

We're doomed..?

Discuss.

Make work projects to keep the city employee's getting a paycheck
In case you hadn't noticed the country is in a recession/depression

**TRAP**?? Well since anyone living in the state of Nevada does not pay state income tax thanks to those businesses you seem to detest so much... what ya griping about?

Yes no one has money to travel to Las Vegas... so tourism, and conventions, the main income of the city is down... that causes a chain reaction.

Does the collapse of the casinos, along with everything else around here, mean we don't get roads/school funds?

Which casinos are collapsing? Did they not just open the new City Center project paid for by oil money from Dubai, future home of Halliburton?

We're doomed..?

Well pardner, saddle up and head outta town

Discuss.

Say please
Besides next year convention business will be an on year again
No worries

I left Las Vegas for the last time in late 2005. I saw the writing on the wall then. It doesn't take an economist to tell you that a city run entirely on disposable income is doomed to fail eventually.

I saw you lived in Vegas, so here is some support:

I go, regularly, to Vegas to lose all of my saved up money! I know I am only one person, but Vegas is my favorite place in the US and I love my neighbors!

I am sorry to see this, and I hope it gets fixed soon. (Either way I am going to be there in a month or so, to lose some more money)

It won't be long before Vegas will look like Dubai. Lots of empty high rises with no economy. It's kinda ironic that the motto states "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" when flocks of people and the economy are leaving everyday. With no tax revenue, infrastructure will never get finished.

Ever hear of Lake Mead, Colorado River and Boulder dam? There is also Lake Las Vegas

Did you know that the Belagio uses water from beneath its hotel. Vegas sits on a huge aquifer. No water shortage here. The water in this small lake in front of the hotel is fed by a natural spring and Belagio recycles all its water

Nevada Solar One is a new solar thermal plant with a 64 MW generating capacity, located near Boulder City, Nevada Insolation (solar radiation) in the Mojave Desert is among the best available in the United States, and some significant population centers are located in the area. This makes the Mojave Desert particularly suitable for solar power plants. These plants can generally be built in a few years because solar plants are built almost entirely with modular, readily available materials.[4]

I'm just back from visiting as a tourist a few weeks ago. Its now my 2nd favourite place in the USA. Interesting to get a locals take on the place. It seemed prosperous enough to me. In fact to an outsider the opulence of the place is staggering.

Its reassuring to know that the suffering of my bank balance was for a greater good :-)

I had a great time. The place needs to work on its marketing to europeans. Most brits look as if your mad when you mention going there. Yet all those I know who've been would go back in a heartbeat.

Z, man, dude, just look at the pic of the video you posted. The water level of Lake Mead is over a hundred feet lower than it used to be BITD, and I ain't THAT old, yet.

As for the aquifer, from my understanding it's been long gone.

Go read the article in the LVRJ from 9-26 - I can't link it as it won't let my post go through(frakking newspaper, they suck too) - it talks about the water being "pumped into oblivion".

Anyway, moving on. My story? I've always hated this town and when my life fell apart in Phoenix I had the choice of being homeless and losing all my stuff or coming back home. If my car hadn't blown up I would have stayed there, been homeless, lived in my car and gotten a job and fixed my life. But it blew up so I was screwed.

I've had one job that lasted three months and wasn't even full time. In almost two years that's all I have worked. No one calls, no interviews, nothing. Why try, as it's useless? I used to run a Italian restaurant and I can't even get a pizza delivery job? I fill out apps, get nothing. I send out resumes, get nothing.

Frak this town, frak the people that live here, blow it all to hell for all I care. This town sucks donkey gonads.

I loathe, abhor, detest, outright HATE Las Vegas. Always have, always will.

This recession is a funny thing,
I travel the country quite a bit,..
and aside from a few people complaining about not working,
things just dont seem that bad.
maybe construction is slowing down, but I dont feel it in the malls
or other shopping areas. People are still going to movies, fast food
and walmart like usual
In the electrical industry, things are moving right along, Coal, nuke, and gas generation
plants are still expanding and lots of jobs, So I think it is no big deal.
Maybe gambling is slowing down, but any money wise person would curb that idea
so naturally a city that bases it's economy on that is going to suffer a bit,..
I was in North Vegas for 5 weeks in May-June and work was very steady,..

i have a friend who recently went to vegas, said he had a great time. i'll have to ask him some more questions about how busy it was.

has anyone watched that "reality" show rehab? its about an outdoor club in vegas with huge pools and the day to day problems the staff, management and barternders have to deal with. the place always looks packed but the bartenders are always complaining about tips, one bartender even had the audacity to complain about a $200 tip, ummmm thats a pretty decent days work let alone a single tip from one group of people.

I was planning to go to Vegas for the first time in a couple of months but if the op says it's that bad maybe I'll go on a cruise instead. Not to change the subject but what is the bed bug situation in Vegas. That's got me a little worried. I don't want to bring any of those suckers back to Canada with me.

That town is truly a modern day Sodom and Gomorrah. It is a town built on "sin". It is town built on actual escape (originally from the Federal government) and the concept of escape (modern day vacations). it is a town that lacks any substantial or relevant history and culture (in a country with little to spare itself, relative to Europe). It is a town built on excess, materialism, and artificiality. It is a town that is built on the others' failure not only to succeed at gambling, but failure to control their nasty habit. It is a town that then takes those concepts to new levels of gross absurdity.

Though I a not at all a Bible Thumper (I'm not even a Christian period), I do understand the metaphors that exist in the Bible. Vegas is being "punished by God". That is, the facade is finally crumbling, and the entire city will go down with it.

Yes it is lower than it has been. Its that global warming thingamajig... less rain, no snow in the mountains

As for the aquifer, from my understanding it's been long gone.

Well its still bubbling out of the ground at 26th and Cedar and Belagio's Lake is as full as ever. The whole water shortage thing was to get average Joe to cut back so they can sell more at the higher rate to industry

If it was really so bad, you think they would have allowed all that housing expansion and new casinos?

Go read the article in the LVRJ from 9-26 - I can't link it as it won't let my post go through(frakking newspaper, they suck too) - it talks about the water being "pumped into oblivion".

Well sorry about your messed up life and your blown up car... things are tough all over right now. But since Obama told people not to go to Vegas, and companies are sending all the jobs to China and India, and we have a constant flood of illegal workers....

It's not gonna get much better for a while. My friend across the street lost his house... he fell off a ladder and crushed his leg then his company sold out and his boss moved to Phoenix. No job = no house...

But my sister, who lives in Toronto, also had illness and no work... she solved her woes and saved her house by selling on Ebay, etc. Just hitting yard sales and thrift shops and reselling on the internet...

You know what? she did so well that last Xmas she took her family of 4 to Costa Rica for two weeks.

People tend to blame the city where they have issues... but the problem is not only local. I too have been off work since June, convention industry is affected too... but they are booked heavy for next year... that will boost the economy

Frak this town, frak the people that live here, blow it all to hell for all I care. This town sucks donkey gonads.

Love that positive attitude
that always helps make things better

Well if the report of the OP is enough to keep you away, then go on that cruise.... maybe to the Gulf and see the oil spill, or how about Alaska and see the glaciers melting?

Bed bugs? Hell YA We got them everywhere... place is infested with em.

Yea well I was kinda being sarcastic in that post and funny sarcastic not mean sarcastic like some members. But with an answer like that maybe I will stay away. You sound like a stereotypical American, a lot of hot air and no real helpful input.

There's a huge solar project not even 100 miles from Las Vegas called Hualapai Valley Solar in Mohave County, it's going to be the largest solar plant in the world and they are breaking ground in the next few months. They will need 2,000 skilled workers for 3 years to build it, and it will be the size of 4,000 football fields.
Type in The Hualapai Valley Solar Project on Facebook, sorry I don't know how in imbed here.

With the completion of the Hoover Dam Bypass which is opening October 14th, it should take no longer than 1 hour to reach to site.
