If not ghosts, what is happening?

I think that classifications are indeed part of the problem. Everyone thinks the broad label of "ghost", when there are many different types of phenomena, and each type has specific criteria.

For example, even with "ghosts", it could be the active spirit of someone deceased, or just a phantom scene (i.e. a replaying of events in a given location, left behind by some kind of strong emotion there).

For poltergeists, it could be a powerful, non-human entity, or a pre-adolescent child with unrealized telekinesis abilities (that sadly, the real world will soon render inert).

Then there are what are typically termed as "demons"...entities that were never human, and simply exist at a different level of existence than us, but seem to seek harm against us (for as yet unknown reasons).

There are many others of course, Shadow People, Incubus, Succubus, Night Hag, etc. that are often first described as "ghosts".....

However, in paranormal shows, it's important to remember that first and foremost, the goal is entertainment and selling ads....NOT paranormal research....so you can expect some fakery if they show, and net nothing. They aren't just going to come away empty handed.

Yeah I would say my favorite is ghost adventures, I used to watch GH's but it lost it's appeal after 3rd season and now it's completely unwatchable to me.... The guys on ghost adventures are such tools but that's what makes the whole show so entertaining, I don't know how much evidence is faked if any (probably some)... The way they do the investigations seems more real, 3 guys locked down with their equipment for the most part you don't see them using all the gimmicks other shows do....
