First of all...this is kind of simplistic and silly...but I'll give it a go.

I'll first hold my favorite person of the tale is person E. Person E decided to care for another sentient without pay or reciprocation. This person, whether they know it themselves or not, is for lack of better words, blessed. This individual is in-sync with the spiritual, love, and goodwill. E is an enlightened soul, and an individual that all should strive to emulate.

Next I will hold person A as my second favorite. He is the type of person that I would desire everyone in the world to be if the spiritual did not exist. This person is practical, he looks to save himself, and others (by consequence) through his tireless efforts of practicality and ingenuity. He could not be distracted by such things as love, which was not going to save anyone from a fate of starvation and death.

The third individual I hold as precious is C. She's a lovable idiot. She loved her partner so much that she was willing to sacrifice her flesh in order to reunite her heart and soul. If she didn't bother distracting A and burdening E, she would tie as number one along with E. However, she is kind of an idiot...so she gets third place. This idiot knows and understands the cost of love and preforms a beautiful sacrifice. I really want to bump her higher, but her actions (bothering A and E) make me think otherwise

The final two are in fourth place, the trash heap. B is all too typical of all of those in the world today. How I hate them, I look at them walking to class, on the bus, and in my living area. I see them all. I know their hearts, and I see how they would take advantage of anyone who is in need of assistance. Hate is a strong word...no, my heart longs to love them, as I can hear them cry out from the pits of their souls. They have experienced some form of pain that has transformed them into such people. They were burned once before, time and time again...this is their way of coping and adapting to a cold cold world. Tying with B, is D. He's a child, spiritually. He has not learned to gift of forgiveness. His world revolves around his own experience and takes no account of the sacrifices individuals constantly pay into during their life spans.

Yeah, that's about it

E
A
C
B,D

Warning: I agree it's interesting to consider variables, BUT, if you guys get into this too deeply, then the Key will be disappointing to you!

It's to rank your values, not to do a character evaluation! Ha.

(Although many of the responses are veeeeeeweeeee interwesting, hmmmm.....) lol.

It's also interesting to see which other members got the same ranking as you.

I know, isn't it odd? Only one other person so far has ranked identically to me.
We are kindred spirits.

And when (with all due respect) might this key be forthcoming? Days, weeks, ..just curious, school in the morning

Everybody is too caught up crucifying B, LOL!

They don't realize that "survival of species" is even stronger than "survival of self" in the animal world!

If they stay stranded on that island, C will find herself in both a scary and enviable position. All 4 of those other men will eventually resort to tactics similar to B's. As time rolls on, instincts take over and civilization becomes a distant memory, the strongest or craftiest person will wind up being C's "mate" whether she likes it or D likes it or not!

Anybody that would like to disagree with the ranking of the instincts or how far one will go for sex, just look at the scenarioi! C gave up her own body and risked her life in a makeshift raft to join her mate. The mate subsequently rejected her even on an abandoned island because of a sexual act! Sex trumps everything else!!

Don't worry, it will just show how mentally (un?)stable you are. It's not like the whole world can see what you posted. Oh wait...

Okay, I read the OP to my spouse and here are the answers. By the way, my spouse is STILL rambling on and on with the story!

QUOTE:

E - didn't ask anything in exchange.

C - tried to get to her lover the best and only way she could do it. She couldn't build the raft herself, so she asked help. She took comfort in E after being spurned by D.

B - he just asked for her "how's your father" which is acceptable at the time.

A - trying to build a radio to get everybody off the island. (good reasoning)

D - narrow-minded

Ideal Ending:

E & C raft to a third island and live happily ever after. They have lots of children and they name (one) after A because he got the radio to work.

A, B, and D are rescued and leave.

"E's" name is Peter ... no, A B C D E - Arthur Bertie Carol Dick & Edward
Just goes to show ya that Dick's don't always get the girl.

END QUOTE

You know, you just reminded me that ladyinwaiting (OP) only told us the gender of "C"
For all we know, C had a lesbian love affair with B, and her girlfriend D got ticked off!

There are no correct answers. Everything in this reality is completely subjective.
A - Hopes to use his intellect and genius to escape certain death.
B - Hopes to satisfy a biological and instinctual need he didn't ask for.
C - Hopes to reunite her heart and soul with her lover by sacrificing her physical being.
D - Hopes to free himself from an unexpected betrayal of unity by renouncing his love.
E - Hopes to share and live in unity.

The truth is, everything is subjective and everyone has their own angle in life. Objectively, the only thing that actually matters in this reality is experience. Experience helps the overmind to grow and thrive.Debating on how to properly achieve experience for the overmind is purely conjecture that maybe has no basis what so ever.

The only thing that we can do is live...how we live, is based upon each and every different individual.

I just checked, she uses "he" or "him" in referring to all of the other characters. C is the only woman. You scared me for a second though.

Look, I'm only picking on you BECAUSE no one rated the Letter People like I did.
(Just a little diversionary tactic that I'm quite sure will only add to my psychological ills when we get these results back!) Heck, I'm lookin for the lil men in lil white coats to show up at my door any minute now...

"They're coming to take me away hee-hee, ha-ha, ho-ho,
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time..."

Firstly, it is interesting to me that all kinds of different combinations played out here. I'm actually surprised there are people with so many excuses for peoples' actions. And I was equally surprised that people generally understood E to be the caretaker and not the advantage-taker like B.

Having said that, I'm surprised no one else chose :

E, A, B, C, D

E is not judging, but giving.
A is busy doing what he is already doing. He could help her, but what about the risks of rafting to the other island? They just survived a wreck and she wants him to make him responsible for something besides being saved?
B is a sleezeball, but he follows through with his deal. C did not have to accept the deal.
C is not being very wise. If D can see them clearly at night on the other island, she could obviously clearly see HIM on the island. If they can see eachother well enough to know what actions they are doing, they can more likely than not communicate in some way until they better understand their situation. Safety comes before gratification - putting others at risk for one's own feelings is purely selfish...
D is perfect for C and they don't even know it! They are both selfish. IF D cared about C, he would have got his hands dirty and gotten over there... considering he was bored enough to sit on the beach and do nothing but watch B and C do their thing. They are both selfish and helpless and, although they are humans and E is right in treating B like a human being, neither at this particular moment in time are thinking about giving to others for any reason - and D the least of them all.

There actually has to be an overmind, however, that has nothing to deal with a God god or g-d of any sort.

Objectively, in the very end...NOTHING matters. Which is why my point remains standing tall. Live, living is the only thing that matters. How one lives is up to the individual, because everything else is subjective.

You mean more useless mistakes causes guilt which makes the overmind (the lord of this world, evil) more powerful.

There are better ways than making stupid mistakes to learn lessons in life.
