It's from Withnail and I. Jake the Poacher (Michael Elphick). "I've seen you, dancing around like a pratt. You need working on boy!"

What a weird topic. Its like saying people do arts because they want to look cool and get attention. I guess you think art is unnecessary?

My avatar tries to reflect upon my username in some form of art.

I just made this avatar two days ago because I was missing New Orleans, was proud of the Saints for beating the Vikings, and was sickened over the situation there. Before this one I had another self-made avatar that showed something about me if you paid attention.

I think most of us wear them to reflect our names or something about ourselves, not to look cool. Though that can often be a side-effect.

My avatar, is, of course, a self-portrait.

Impressive, no?

Isn't your avatar the really mean guard from the movie "The Elephant Man"?

Just curious. I'm pretty sure that it's the same actor at least.

*ETA*Yeah, I should have made it to page 2 before I posted!

The second line still applies!

On topic my avatar was made my AshleyD and I use it because she was kind enough to make it for me! It actually does kind of represent my feelings about religion, in an abstract way. But do I use it because I think it makes me seem cool? No.

I make my own avatars... who's meanings are only esoteric to me. However, avatars are like brands. It's a good way to distinguish the contributors you enjoy reading the most whilst at the same time avoiding those members that only serve to irritate.

I'm watching you!

Where did you get the idea that avatars are to impress people or look cool only on the web? Maybe I like to impress people and look cool all the time. Maybe I simply am cool.
Seriously though, I don't think avatars have anything to do with being cool or impressing people, at least not for me and apparently a lot feel the same.

As others have said, it's an way for others to recognize us and we're essentially branding ourselves. Does it matter if someone finds a picture that they like through Google that relates to them in some way, simply like it or if they make it themselves?

While I hold nothing to some of the real artists here, you can be cool and impressive if that's the way it makes you feel or simply become more recognizable.

I like the art...nothing more. My intent when making my backgrounds is not to impress people with how great I am but express what I'm trying to express.

I figure if I post a cool Avatar people will be impressed and I can make my internet more powerful tool for me to continue my level of sophistication I prefer to show my cooler side.

I am so glad I chose to be a member of this super-cool site. I am so juiced to be a friend to so many totally awesome, super-cool groovy people!

See. my butterfly is off-center, to show just the wing against the buddleia flowers. That shows that I like to be different, a little edgy, not one of "the crowd!" Get it? I"M COOL!

Well.....

I think it's best to stick to one avatar so as to avoid confusion.

Kind regards
Maybe...maybe not

Animated avatars are so distracting. Hypnotic, almost.

Avatars are just one of those things. Like clothes, hairstyles, music choices.... It's a way to express one's self. Each person is going to choose their avatar for their own reasons. Or make a point of NOT having one and possibly even making fun of those who do.

Just like they choose a unique username. Right? I mean if you weren't trying to impress someone, you'd just use your real name, right, Paradigm2012?

I like my avatar because he is my heart dog and I love to see his face staring back at me. Oh, and I can dress him up for different occasions. Oh, and it gets me into the "cool people" club.

Avatars and images can and do say something about the person using them or convey a message. What that message conveys may mean different things from the perspective of the user and the viewers, but I have no doubt that there is an influence. An interesting study on avatars and images and what the research suggests is here: Influence of Avatars and Images, no need to read the entire thread, the opening post summarizes the study and the study itself is attached.
