Hello fellow ATSer's...

This is a situation that I need your collective help with.

I do not need to go into the heartache and devestation that the people of the Gulf Coast region have had to endure the last several years.

Well I happened upon an absolutely disgusting statement by a Hall of Fame NFL player and current NFL commentator, Dan Hampton.

Here is the video...

What was this man thinking?

Just some quick Katrina stats...

1,900 confirmed deaths.
$90,000,000,000 in damages.
Tens of thousands left homeless.

For someone to state that the "Vikings willl hit the Saints like Katrina" is one of the most out of line things I have ever heard uttered in sports.

I normally would not do something like this, but I lost some friends in the tragedy.

Mr. Hampton is also a spokesman for Firestone and Chevrolet. I wonder if they know?

This massive tool should not have a job tomorrow. I AM SURE SOME CONCERNED INDIVIDUALS WILL DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.

I hate asking for Stars and Flags, in fact I am against it, but in this case lets make an exception and keep this thread near the top of the board so that everyone can see it.

To be brutally honest, I think you are being overly sensitive. It was smack talk in sports. The same man has probably made a thousand "yo mama" jokes, too. And yet the world manages to go on....some how, some way.

Wow...comparing yo mama jokes to horrific devestation and loss of life.

Classic.

And we've already forgotten that the Saints won last time at the Super Bowl, beating the Vikings?
Dang, that was like just a few months ago and we've already forgotten it.

But yeah, so you're seriously expecting an apology from a sports commentator?

Being from New Orleans, I do not take this as an insult or anything. This was just a metaphor that he used. Nothing malicious was meant by it and that I am sure of. But I think he had it wrong, the Saints will hit them like a hurricane! The vikings do not have a chance

Yep-- talking trash in sports is still just trash talk. Start a revolt over that man's statement if it makes you feel better. However, I stand behind my original statement that you are being overly sensitive and blowing the whole thing WAY out of proportion.

So I suppose it would have been cool if rather he had said one of the following...

1. Carolina panthers are gonna hit the New York Giants like a hijacked airplane.

2. The Detroit Lions are gonna hit the Chicago Bears like a cow knocking over a lantern in a barn (obscure reference but some will get it)

3. The Jacksonville Jags are gonna hit the Denver Broncos like a blunt object hitting Jon Benet Ramsey's skull.

I could go on, but I think you get the idea.

well out of the utmost respect,
I do agree with the above quote.
While the announcer may have been
unsympathetic, I don't believe
it was an actual intended diss
to Katrina victims.

I wouldn't get bent out of shape
over something like this, but I guess
we're different in certain ways.

best wishes

Jon Benet was killed in Boulder, not Denver. Totally different cities. Boulder isn't even a suburb of Denver. And the Jaguars don't stand a chance against the Broncos. Broncos RULE!

And it would be easier to say "Detroit Lions are gonna burn the Chicago Bears down to the ground!"

Nothing you are saying is changing my mind about the whole thing being blown out of proportion. But we can go back and forth all day. Your feelings are hurt. I understand.

To each their own I suppose.

I have to say this goes way beyond trash talking.

You are calling someone to get fired over THAT?

WOW.

I will say this though-by that logic-If only we could get our political leaders fired for saying stupid crap. Wait, what am I talking about/ damned that freedom of speach.

Im sure if you wrote to the guy telling him how 'upset' it makes you, maybe, just maybe, hemight send an appology letter back to you.
Then maybe, you can forgive him for this horrible sin.

You get the point.

Now you are just being nitpicky.

For the record...my feelings are not hurt. There is simply a thing called accountability.

Allright, so bulding a mosque 2 blocks away from ground zero is such a big deal that everyone is freaking out over it.

But no one cares about this?

What if it was a muslim who said it? Would everyone change their tune?

How do you know the commentator isn't a Muslim? And what an odd idea to bring to the conversation. It feels like political correctness cross wiring to me.

I agree with you and am not a big fan of introducing the religion card into this discussion, but I have to admit...there may be some small merit to what knuckles is saying.

I think you are being overly sensitive OP. In sports, trash talk is part of the sporting environment, even if it seems like a cheap shot.

On a side note, I hope the Saints collapse on themselves this season...I mean epic collapse, like the twin towers

I think you guys really need to lighten up. It was an ex-jock talking about a football game using a tactless metaphor, nothing more.

If it were a FEMA rep or GWB saying this I could see the gripe, but since it wasn't quit being so uptight.

As to the "What if a Muslim had said that" comment... what on God's green Earth does that have to do with anything even remotely related to this thread?
