The United States was able to defeat Nazi Germany and helped bring down the USSR, but is the U.S. government now quickly becoming just like them? Once upon a time, America was the land of the free and the home of the brave, but today the government has become an oppressive monster that is intrusively embedding itself in our lives in thousands of different ways. Today we are all viewed as potential threats to the "system" that the government has imposed, and therefore everything that we do must be watched, tracked, traced, recorded and controlled. Lip service is still given to ideals such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion and freedom of movement, but all of those freedoms are rapidly dying a brutal death. To our forefathers, living the American Dream meant living as free men and women, but today it means living under deep socialist tyranny where the government takes care of us from the cradle to the grave and uses an increasingly oppressive Big Brother police state control system to guarantee our safety.
The following are 20 signs that America is no longer the land of the free....
1 - Government trash snooping has now come to America. The city of Cleveland plans to sort through curbside trash to ensure that people are actually recycling their trash. If it is discovered that they are not recycling properly they will be hit with very large fines.
2- It is becoming increasingly difficult to express free speech online. The city of Philadelphia is actually forcing bloggers to pay them $300 for a business license. In this economic climate, who can afford to pay an extra 300 dollars just to have a blog? So much for free speech in Philadelphia.
3 - All of our DNA will soon be in a database. Barack Obama has been pushing a plan to create a national database that will store the DNA of all individuals who have been arrested, even if they end up not being convicted of a crime.

Source & Link to the other 17 reasons: endoftheamericandream.com...

I am 58 and became politically aware November 22, 1963 at the age of 10.

Since 1963 things have changed drastically here in America and the world.

I would strongly suggest reading the other 17 reasons..........because of ATS's strick "only three paragraphs (that is also a conspiracy of sorts) rule I cannot post them all here. I will try to paraphrase some of them.

4 is about the current Presidential Administration is demanding access to all Internet records of all Americans without court review.

8 is about Intel wants to put the internet via a chip implant in the brain for everyone (borg anyone?)

11 is U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Lindsey Graham have been promoting legislation that would institute a biometric national identification card for all Americans.

12 is

anyone can be labeled a "terrorist" and denied even the most basic of rights. New legislation being pushed by U.S. Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman earlier this year would allow the U.S. military to round up large numbers of Americans and detain them indefinitely without a trial if they are believed to "pose a threat" or if they have "potential intelligence value" or for any other reason that the President of the United States "considers appropriate".

13 is about the relationship between the public and the police and how the police use to be about "to protect and serve". That's not the case anymore.

17 is about the right to not have to pasturize your milk (Amish Farmers) being raided for not paturizing their milk. Now we're being told what we can eat and drink. How far is this going to go. I lived on a dairy farm and we never paturized our milk, I very rarely ever get sick. Got my first cold at 21. No allergies, strong as a ox (and I'm a little old lady).

18.

We can't even get on an airplane now without first allowing gawking security officials to get a good look at our naked bodies. The new full body security scanners going into airports all across the United States can actually see through clothing and produce very clear and very detailed images of the exposed bodies of everyone who walks through them.

19 -

But the government would never save any of those naked images, would they? Well, the U.S. Marshals Service confessed recently that it had indeed saved tens of thousands of images recorded with a millimeter wave system at the security checkpoint of one Florida courthouse.

20.We can't sing the national anthem in certain public places anymore

A group of high school students made national headlines recently when they revealed that they were ordered by a security guard to stop singing the national anthem during a visit to the Lincoln Memorial.

21 My own - In the name of "National Security" (Really just another constructed issue to curtail our freedoms) Travel to Canada and you must have a pass port.

The last time we went to Canada, the guard waved us through and said, "Have a swell time folks". Now you need a pass port and other papers (a friend just got back from Canada and had to show some other papers??? What other papers and why a pass port, we're neighbors for crist sake.

Just remember, fences and "security" can be used two ways.........to keep terrorists out but also to imprision the very inhabitants within.

22. My own - cameras on most corporation, shopping centers, malls and major intersections. Cameras, cameras everywhere. Just don't scratch your butt or adjust your bra strap, someone will get a good laugh.

As stated before, I'm 58. For many of the ATS Members, the "young ones" you can't remember a different time. Possibly the way things are now is all you can remember. Things use to be drastically different.

We are truely living in the beginnings of a Fascist Police State.

It began November 23, 1963 with the (wink) swearing in of Lyndon B. Johnson.

Welcome to the New World Order.

And for all the rest of the world reading this, America is just the starting point, this is just the beginning for a planet wide lock down unless a vast majority of people WORLD WIDE rise up against this tyranny.

Our freedoms have been stripped away little by little by fear mongering. Yes there are evil Muslims afoot but the real threat is within our very borders, in Washington, hidden in plain sight. They wear fancy suits and ties, corporate "goon wear" and call themselves Senators, Congressmen and Surpreme Court Judges.

good post and good information!!! S+F!

But we are still technically free... We have the freedom to come and go as we please, watch whatever we want, browse anything on the internet, eat whatever we choose, work where we want, live where we want, freedom to have as many kids as we want, freedom to back talk our government leaders, freedom to protest, bear arms, vote (even though it doesn't count for anything really), freedom of religion, we are not forced to join the military (lately), we have the freedom to choose our education, freedom to say what we want and how we feel, and soooo many other things that if I list it will be way to long LOL.

I get what you are getting at but if you think about it most of those "reasons" are pretty justified seeing the world we are living in right now.

What I find alarming is the gradual infusion of the points brought out here are to the newer America is what they will uphold vehemetly. You see it all the time in the replies given here on ATS in so many replies. I'm 79 and the America that was bountiful and free is no longer and now will never be again. What we see is saddening indeed. Thanks for the thoughts.

Actually those "freedoms" you mention?
We are watching carefully crafted propaganda mostly....
As the MSM is owned by three or so majors all giant corporate entities, it can be tailored to suit those views the MSM wants people to hold.
We have the freedom to travel, but like the OP says you need a passport and "other documents".
More and more GMO foods are apearing, and the huge corps who produce seeds are patenting the seeds....(in other words you will have to buy them every year...the ones the plants produce will be sterile)
And yep, we can work where we want as long as we can find a job(about 15% of Americans cannot find one)
Protesting has a price to pay, and is not free.....the protesters usually end up demonized by the MSM, and socially marginalised by everyone
Much of the higher education is restricted to the moneyed few....
The right to bear arms is and has been constantly under attack and it is currently being chipped away a small piece at a time...
Voting fraud won the election for George Bush, and is suspected in many instances since the voting became electronic....
In short all that you mention is not a permanent state in america, and our freedom is under constraint at present with the laws governing emergencies etc....patriot act etc.
So in reality the OPs case is made even stronger by these facts.
if you think America is truely "Free" you are sadly mistaken.
Even our money system runs on borrowed cash...ie fed reserve in private hands.
Wake up!

The actual definition of the word free has changed. If anyone sees a free man in the US, he is immediately put in prison. Real freedom frightens Americans.

I respectfully disagree with several issues concerning your post.

But we are still technically free... We have the freedom to come and go as we please,

*** Not without a passport and papers, not without going through a body scanner that another person can see you naked and take a picture of your said nakedness. (This might be a thrill for some of you but for me, I wear clothes for a reason, I am modest (was raised that way) and would like to keep my private parts private. And people's movements are being slowly and methodically curtailed little by little, more papers here, another fence with security there. Little by little is how they do it and they TPTB are doing it.

Watch whatever we want,
*** Most of what is available is corporate propaganda. Not all of it, there is still a lot of good stuff, however - take our news, most of it is sanitized and lies abound. Free to watch what TPTB choose for you to watch. Real information is power and we're not getting it from the mainstream media.

Browse anything on the internet,
*** I've been a surfer on the net since it first popped up...........that too has changed. Music and really good clip art/ use to be a lot more and all free. It's drying up little by little every year that goes by and if TPTB get their way our "alternative news" the real stuff will dry up too. Also, ATS itself has undergone a drastic change - read some of the many posts on that issue alone.

Eat whatever we choose,
*** If you chose to have a cow and milk said cow and not pasteurize your milk or not use Monsanto genetically tinkered seeds you risk the possibility of having your farm descended upon by "agents" read #17. We can still buy heritage seeds and I strongly suggest doing that as each year passes we're being "encouraged" to use Monsanto genetically altered seeds".

fyi: I grew up on a farm, we grew tomatoes, corn, beans, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, cows, chickens and rabbits. I know what real food tastes like and the stuff we're getting now isn't the same.

17 - The U.S. government has become so paranoid that now even milk is viewed as a major threat. Organic milk is now considered such a national crisis that the FDA has been conducting military style raids on Amish farmers in the state of Pennsylvania.
Source: endoftheamericandream.com...

Work where we want,
*** My job of 16 years was outsourced to India. From the talk on the street, people will work anywhere that is now hiring and bullying and employee abuse is common in the workplace as well as low salaries for most people. I was bullied for over ten years - one decade. I did exactly what I was told to do, no questions asked, or else. I was told, " Well you should be able to get your workload done within 35 hours...........BS.

Live where we want,
*** Only if you have $$$ I serve meals to the homeless twice a month and with each passing year I am seeing more / much more old people and children that came from middle class families, were the middle class just a few years ago.........things are changing.

*** No, you can only live where you want if you have a job that pays a half way decent salary and said job hasn't been outsourced or in sourced. I know several people living in their cars. No apartment, no condo, no townhouse - they live in their cars. Each year this number is growing.

Freedom to have as many kids as we want,
*** Yep they haven't initiated the one kid per family law yet, however if you don't make enough money, you don't have a job or a real low paying job, it's not a good idea to make babies. Anybody with half a brain will wait until they have a good stable job, a good stable marriage and everything in order before bringing another human into this reality.

Freedom to back talk our government leaders,
*** Yes you’re right; I've e-mailed and complained to Obama and Senator Melissa Bean every week and no agents at my door yet.

Freedom to protest,
*** Only in small numbers and now in most places you have to acquire a permit. fyi: I protested the Vietnam War and have had a line of police march towards us, in battle formation............pretty frightening, very intimidating. Not for the faint of heart. And that was years ago.

Bear arms,
*** If legal, they must be registered. And there is a reason for this, if a gun is registered, when marshal law is put into effect TPTB can have their goons (soldiers/police) know who and where the legal guns are and go and simply confiscate them. The people who have not registered their guns have "broken the law" and these folks can be imprisoned. Either way, if and when it is decided we will no longer have the right to bear arms. It's coming, believe me, I see it coming. I use to be for gun control until I researched this issue for three years.

Vote (even though it doesn't count for anything really),
** Right again, they don't count. Our voting system is rigged. Ask Diebold. It's not who votes that counts it is who is counting the votes. IMHO Corporate America / lobbyists are the deciding factor now in our elections.

Freedom of religion,
*** I'm spiritual not religious but you're right you can go to any church or synagogue or now mosque your little heart desires.

We are not forced to join the military (lately),
*** That could possibly change. www.classbrain.com... and the rich elite's kids don't die in battle like the poor man's kids. Good old George Bush Jr. may have worn a pilot fighter flight suit for a publicity shot, but he never saw action. I have two friends whose older brothers were killed in Nam.

We have the freedom to choose our education,
*** Public education is the pits. We put all our money into war and begrudge our teachers and schools enough funding to really make a difference. My girlfriend is a teacher in Milwaukee Wisconsin and she says their books are old and the students have to share. My girlfriend in Milwaukee has 40 students in her high school class. My one sister in law that teaches kindergarten has 36 and the other one that teaches middle school is up to 25 (special ed). One of my friends that live two streets over has a son in high school and in most of his classes you’re looking at 35-42 kids per class.

My granddaughter when she went to a private school had 12 kids in her class. Now in a public school she is one of 30+.

The rich can afford to educate their children well, the rest of us, the common man face a inadequate public educational school system and most children being key latch kids from 9 years of age on up.

The rich can afford "nannies" to manage their children while they work, the rest of us can't.

Only if you are rich, can you afford to live in an area that has better schools and or send your little darlings off to a private institution. For the common man, the regular public educational system sucks. Most high school kids I encounter can't read or write very well.

Freedom to say what we want and how we feel, and soooo many other things that if I list it will be way to long LOL.

*** Yes but be very careful, if you are in anyway shape or form deemed a "national security threat" you could be detained without a trial for a long period of time. Things they are a changing.

Nice OP. S&F!

Is this Detroit? It looks like Detroit.

Detroit is awesome!

Ya know, if you were to fumigate that couch, that's a quality piece of furniture there.

As an American in Taiwan, I can honestly say that I feel pretty free here. Citizens cannot own guns but on just about everything else, I'd say they are as free or more free than Americans.

Yes, I believe that is Detroit.

Each one of those houses represent a person who lost their dream.

With every passing year I am seeing more and more abandon houses. Not so much in my neighborhood but when I go into the city to help serve meals to the homeless, I see so many foreclosures now.

Another give away to how the economy is going is what is being thrown out on the curb on trash day.

Just a few years back, there was some pretty decent stuff, I got two wing back chairs, a end table and a small irish china hutch, I still have not a scratch on it.

Now, even in the nicer neighborhoods, you don't see the garbage gods being so generous anymore.

People are throwing away real junky stuff now, very rarely do I see anything half way nice.

And, I believe the economy, at least here in America is only going to get worse. I hope I'm wrong.

Thank you for posting. It is fasinating to me to read how people that live outside the US are faring.

The internet is fantastic. To be able to communicate with someone in another country within minutes is still a wonderment to me.

Wish more people on ATS would post at least what country they are from.

I was going to do more, but this one alone is a HUGE lie.

15 - In 2010, it seems like the government wants to investigate just about everyone and everything. For example, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently called for opponents of the proposed Ground Zero mosque to be investigated in order to establish who is funding their activities.

It links to an article that says:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Wednesday morning called for “transparency” in the funding behind a planned Islamic community center and mosque being built blocks from ground zero. But she also said there should be similar openness about the money behind conservative attacks aimed at thwarting the project.

It's almost like the list's author is trying to...mislead us.

Funny that the author only made reference to the latter, so apparently he has no problem with the former. You don't GET to make that distinction, buddy. Especially if you truly believe in the Land of the Free.

And calling for transparency isn't the same as a gov't investigation.
