A mosque by ground zero, why not?

www.examiner.com

There are plans for a mosque to be built two blocks away from ground zero in New York City. Right-wingers are calling it a “slap in the face.” Left-wingers are scratching their heads and not saying much either. Has everyone forgotten that the United States has a constitution?

America was built on freedom of religion. People are upset because they blame 9/11 on the religion of Islam. When practiced traditionally, Islam, Judaism, Christianity and Buddhism are all non-violent religions.

This article brings up a good point about America's amendments. We have freedom of speech and religion here. It doesnt seem you can become president if you are not a Christian but other than that you are free to choose your religion. Very good points made here. I think it is ridiculous to say a mosque cannot be built close to ground zero, it is a touchy subject though.

Let me ask you this.

Why must they build a mosque by ground zero?

We all know not all muslims are terroists and not all terroists are muslim, but we do know that the hijackers that killed so many people that day were muslims.

It just seems to me as if they are just trying to cause a problem wanting to build so close to that site.

I say if its not by extremists and by normal rational muslims then by all means allow them.

It really shouldn't matter.

But why I guess it could help heal the wounds a bit.

Oh, yay, yet another mosque topic. I stumbled in here by mistake thinking it was the one I was following. Pardon the intrusion. Carry on.

As a New Yorker born and raised in Manhattan I feel my opinion may matter in this particular topic. I probably don't speak for most New Yorkers when I say this but I personally believe that its more likely that the hijackers of those planes were not Muslim. I believe the gov't is lying to us about 9/11 so a mosque going up in ground zero doesn't bother me one bit. However I find it ridiculous that the people who conceived this plan didn't expect to get a lot of flak about this. I remember seeing kids beating up middle eastern kids in school so I know first hand the effects of the Bush Administration Reign of Media Terror. I expect a lot of people to be pissed off and I fear for the contractors safety.

theyre taking it as if it's the islamic faith, not as if it was a bunch of not-so-smart religious extremists that carried out the act... according to the govmt's theory.

Thanks for sharing this link with all of us. I agree 100% with the author of the site. Don't we all have religion freedom? Think about it. You might have a heart after all.

Shouldn't the Greek Orthodox Church (St. Nicholas) which was by the WTC and destroyed on 9/11 be rebuilt first? Nobody seems to give a damn about that little Christian Church, but everybody seems to be bending over backward (or forward) to appease the Muslims by giving them their mosque.

The building which housed St. Nicholas Church was built in 1832 and Greek Americans started having church services there in 1916, fifty years BEFORE groundbreaking began for the Towers. Talk about people having their priorities up their rear ends.

Then why won't they rebuild it already? Most likely the Muslims are paying for their own Mosque. The government had no money in this.

They probably didn't have the money for it times is tough. Which raises a good question, how'd these mysterious muslims get the money for it?

were not building a memorium for the hijackers. the muslim's bought a spot of land that they could afford and it happened to be next to ground zero. besides, it wasnt muslims that attacked the twin towers, it was extremists.

First dont you people on ATS ever think?

Why wont Saudi Arabia allow us to build churchs on there own land first?

Afterall its only fair since they are building more Mosques and bribing world leaders with money to build these Mosques.

Above top secret will be closed down because it favors the Islamic side.

Why not? And while you're at it... build a Catholic church, a Jewish temple and every other shrine.

It seems to me, the right wing only use religion in its rhetoric but have really strayed far from Jesus' original teachings.

What would Jesus do?

Rebuild and yeah, maybe build a mosque right there along with everyone else. Jesus was all about accepting people --prostitutes, tax collectors, samaritans... knowing what I know about him in the bible, it'd be fine with him...
Present day Christians, however, are another question...

It's amazing to me what a waste it was that this thing is still a hole.
If the conservative right had any balls at all, it should have just said with one voice: "rebuild them as they originally appear" end of discussion.
Instead, they fell prey to divisive arguments, etc. Who could have denied Bush if he just declared "build them back the way they were" just weeks afterwards? Do you think Wall street would object? There would be total riots. It was a chance that slipped away as the months and years went by.

What ?? I don't think we favor anyone.

You think because were not against them we must be for them. This is about equality, anyone should be able to build their church wherever they want to in America.

This is not country against country, or people against people. We are not in some covert war.

This should be a non-issue, how would christians respond if they were being criticized for where they build their church ?? Don't you think muslims or anyone else should share the same rights ?? Are we not all equals ?? The majority of Muslims hate terrorists just as we do, we should not be so quick to stereotype a people.

... and the church is two blocks away, not next door.
