ShadowArcher, we have crossed swords before, but on this occasion I tip my hat to you for standing your ground in the face of what can only be described as a real reluctance to face reality from other posters.

As the only other person here that seems to have a properly open mind, I starred most of your posts
Also, happily, I don't have a very good memory, so I don't recall any sword-crossing
I didn't stand my ground in the best way - lowering myself to the same level was not ideal but...just....wow

Time to leave the thread, I think, as it's run its course. I enjoyed it for a time though - it was, for a while, the first thread in a long time that didn't decline into infantile arguing and personal digs. That didn't last long.

Well, I'm no expert, but I think I can see the flicker of flames in those UFOs. I feel similarly to you in that this whole "Chinese Lantern" explain-away is being tossed around a lot, but to me, that is what they look like. Sorry.

I saw the same over Manchester around the same time, at first I thought they might be UFO's but my mum said they were sky lanterns. I have Chinese family so I just believed her tbh.

Oy!!! I'm a Fortean. I have an open mind but not one so open any damn thing can crawl in.

It was plainly obvious that these were lanterns from the very beginning.

What I find shocking is the credulity and aggressiveness displayed by some of the "true believers" in this thread.

And before the credulous hordes descend on me, I have seen things that even I can't explain so I lean towards believing!

Can any of them claim to have seen 2 RAF Phantoms chasing a 20ft diameter silver globe out over the North Sea in the mid 70s?

Nope, but they have seen something orange, globular and flickering at low altitude and low speed (although they always try to deny any of these attributes.)

But Hey!!! They saw a genuine UFO!

Strange that you conceded in an earlier post that they were, in fact, lanterns yet now think its okay to label one of the people who readjusted your model of reality as a fool.

Bi-polar by any chance? Or just vindictive and small minded?

Before you put this thread to bed...

Having seen chinese lanterns near to where I live earlier this year, I'm inclined to say that that's what these are. Although the fact that she was not able to zoom in closer leaves a little shred of doubt in my mind.

Having said that, I was witness to perhaps one of the best genuine orb sightings ever last year in Bristol. This was not reported in the media, nor have my own personal approaches to the media been pursued, despite the fact that I have access to two other groups of separate witnesses who all saw the same thing.

When you see genuine orbs, what you see is bright, glistening balls of pure light energy. Not only do they move with purpose, precision and intelligence, but they also change speed and direction, clearly under intelligent control. The ones I witnessed were moving quickly, about 100 ft above my head. They made no sound and were the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

They also have form, if you are fortunate enough to see them close up, as one of the witnesses to my sighting I contacted on Facebook atested - and she was one of three in the car that saw them up close. She described them as otherworldly with organic form, the undersides moving in and out like church bellows or the skirt of a jellyfish.

Believe what you will, since the majority of these sightings will turn out to be lanterns. The genuine ones, it would seem, are as rare as hens teeth. But genuine they are. We are being visited. Have no doubt...

You may have an open mind, but you haven't posted on this thread before now, so why would I mention you? I'm not going to go and list all the open-minded members on the ATS for a brief, throw-away comment.

I'd like to point out though, that only 2 posters I think (one of which only posted a few times) were trying to state that these were definitely not lanterns. This thread has gone on for so long because other posters were open to either possibility...just less so to the evidence-backed lantern explanation. I'm surprised it's still going - mods have closed far less pointless threads before now.

Just love you guys that can look at these things and work out speeds gets me
all the time lets see

You dont know the size of the objects
You dont know how far away they are
You dont know how high up they are

You have NO definite info to work out a speed so HOW can you do it!!!!!!!!!

There was a commercial aircraft manoeuvering to land to Heathrow, coming from the north. As I said before, it passed between two of the orange lights, one underneath it, one well above it...

By the way, I've seen another one tonight (25 July 2010) at 1:54am
Only one this time, bigger, brighter and faster than the ones on 9 July.
I'm sorry, it was definitely no chinese lantern.

I spend alot of time in London in my wife's flat (we split our time between here and the boat) and she lives on the 12th floor of a block seemingly surrounded by chinese lantern enthusiasts. We see them all the time, mostly from pretty close range due to them being released near the base of the block and rising in the lee of the building. The flickering and colour in the first video you posted is exactly what I see at least once a week.

Watching them sail off into the distance I can totally understand how you could mistake them for UFOs.

As for there being no wind. That was at ground level. 100 feet off the ground it is very, very rare for the air to be still. I know, that is how high I am right now. I would estimate a 5 knot wind is pushing those buggers along. Barely noticeable even if it were blowing like that at ground level.

I'm not a skeptic, by the way. I saw a triangle UFO near Brogborough, Bedford in the mid nineties and I will never forget it. I firmly believe you have chinese lanterns here though. They have reached epidemic proportions in the London area.

Thanks to your silly neighbours, but I can guarantee you what I have seen tonight was no chinese lantern.
I will post the video tomorrow.
We're in St Katharines Dock by the way.

YES! I saw this too but i did just rule this out as chinease lanterns when i saw it but i was never sure, the thing that i found weird was the way in which they lit up, they didnt seem to be coming from the ground, rather just appearing out of no where, I also found the speed kinda weird but with something like that its really hard to say. You call people dellusional for "wanting to believe so bad" but to me it seems you are dellusional in wanting to believe you are the best and only race, you seem too scared to look at things rationally.

Also I think it was the last night of wimbledon tennis so some sort of air phenomona human or not would be more likely.

Are you trying to say that not believing that these are UFOs means that we are Human-supremacists?

EDIT: I say 'we' because after all the discussion (and even some of the infantile arguing) I have decided that I do believe these are simple lanterns. We could still be wrong, but that's what all the available evidence points towards.

Update

Hi all, I know I promised to post the video of 25 July with the one bigger, brighter and faster thing similar to the ones we saw on 9 July.

However, for some reason it's not on the footage, nothing zilch nada at all, just a clear sky though it was bang in the camera frame when filming!

So there's no point for me to post it, but I wonder what the heck happened?

Any idea anyone?
