It is not so secretive as it is overwhelming.
It starts (well articulated) with von Neumann and his Cybernetics science.

Sir,

I consider myself the 'common man', and I both enjoyed and understood your message......but wait, the end made me feel like I ought to think for myself and come up with my own determinations.....what's that about?

However, this project that's been running for 5000 years, could it be stopped?

I would like to kill the power (electricity, Google, gov't, and gasoline), and see which points in the OP are still valid.

Leo Tolstoy wrote in his War and Peace, when Pierre Bezukhov walks the battlefield of Borodino:

"Who is doing this to us?... Nobody. The system."

I just saw "Brave Heart" last night. Remember how William Wallis wanted to just live like a "common man"?

Well... I'm sure you can figure it yourself.

Better slave than grave.

or

Better grave than slave.

If you can run and hide, could be a medium solution, but no guarantees.

However,

The only thing I really have is knowledge, and not the kind of Borg knowledge, which is technical knowledge, but the knowledge which explains how things really work.

The point is: who controls whom? Technology us, or we technology?
If you can answer this question, you'll probably find the answer to how to save yourself.
The problem is: how many people ever bother to ask it? I think very few... Those contribute to the strength of the System.

What or who are you referring to exactly?

There isn't anything to worry about either way.

This is a world inside a world, inside a world, inside a world.

So elitists want to trap themselves in this physical dimension, so be it. If they truly plan to make themselves immortal, they have truly forgotten that their spirit is made of energy.

They're already immortal!

Do they fear reincarnating as......a poor person perhaps? Or do they really juggle the devils balls and forget their true form?

For all who don't wish to participate in this "immortality", don't fear being killed and wiped out. You actually would win, because you will return to your spirit home and then reincarnate where you want.

This all comes down to some people who are addicted to this physical world. They love the power they've achieved, the emotion of being powerful supplies them and they never want to wake from this dream.

Let all who wish it, have it.

It's the reason you can't beat God. Even when they think they win...............they lose. It's what makes him God.

I think this technology is coming soon. It may be the "choice" mankind has to make.

The only sense of power they get is when they escape punishment...

They will all end up in time capsules around Saturn.

Sir,

In deference to the OP, and with respect to you. We are not separate from this place we live upon, called the earth. It's akin to saying the earth hosts the birds and beasts of the field. Man does not exist as a separate order of being. She may shake us to the core one day, but we will continue our evolution, in some diminished capacity possibly.

For a third and final time, my original thoughts;

Remove gasoline, Google, gov't and electricity, and tell me which of the points in the OP remain valid?

I am impressed with this thread.

I am new, so, I post for the sake of finding this in my ATS.

It is "thick". Full of stuff I want to read.

I hope to find this thread every time I log-in.

Thanks to the OP. And, the posters.

Could they really be stupid enough to try and live forever? Are they so gripped with fear about death that it outweighs their curiosity about what death really is?

They are willingly trapping themselves in the material world? The irony here is amazing! They are literally condemning themselves to an eternity in hell! They will regret their decision and found themselves trying to cut their heads off only to have it grow right back.

I wouldn't worry about them succeeding in anything remotely dangerous to human beings survival. You or I may die, most of the population may die, but I highly doubt that evolution is going to sick back and let anything destroy it's greatest achievement of all time.

Just think, in one thousand years, everyone will be able to leave bodies at will, travel the cosmos with a thought, heal their bodies, travel to different realms. Yet, they will still be here, trapped, forever, watching everyone else do things they never dreamed possible.

Even when the sun explodes in 5 trillion years, they will be in space, suffocating over and over and over again. Space boarding anyone? Karma is a bitch.

Don't throw your emotions on the matter in on a serious conversation!
AGI is a serious subject with real consequences. the dream world in which you reffer to is a thought and a theory, not fact!
And so, yes there are people who will want to live forever and this might aid them in their quest for immortality, but don't use the word stupid because that is an opinionated response.you might not know much on the subject so you threw your two cents in.... and it didn't add to anything!
if you believe spirits are real, ok, but that doesn't mean you have one....

so you might be wrong....
I for one don't care to find out what happens when you die because there might not be anything! then it's too late!

I am for cybernetic research cuz I don't mind the consequences.....cuz like boy genius I quoted.... I could just die and be a spirit! lol

-no disrespect though-

You know... at first when I read this post I said "my god, that's absolutely terrifying". But then I read Korg's response and I stopped and re-thought my initial reaction.

And I honestly have to say that this doesn't really sound like a terrible thing. I mean, let's say for example this became a reality and we all became connected to some universal hive mind. Is that really so bad? I think it's a win some, lose some sort of situation.

For example, on the one hand we would lose our individuality and possibly our free will. On the other hand, we would all finally achieve a state of one-ness. This is a technology with as much potential for good as it has for evil.

We are under the impression right now that the people behind this are evil men, who want nothing more than to be masters of the universe, and enslave humanity and kill whoever stands in their way, etc. etc. But, what if their real intention is to unite humanity?

In a hive mind scenario, we would have the potential for eternal happiness. Speaking personally, I'm tired of watching the news and saying "well, that never would've happened if *insert social group* hadn't screwed the pooch" or having to lock my door at night. Or that I have to own a gun because I don't know what crazy crackhead will try to break in.

The benefits seem endless. There would be no more social classes, or racism, or poorness or richness, no more sicknesses that couldn't be cured. You would never lose a child to lukemia, your son would never be picked on at school. You'd never have to yell at your children because they failed to study for a test. You'd never give an *insert racial slur* a dirty look because of some stereotype that's been ingrained into you. You wouldn't have to fear death anymore. You could walk down the street in the dirty part of town without having to worry about being raped or beaten or mugged. Hell, there might not even BE a dirty part of town anymore.
And best of all, no religion. No more praying to false gods or invisible men that may or may not exist. No more "My god is better than your god". No more killing in the name of an unproven idea.

We would all be the same. Which is both a good and bad thing. The real question is, does the good outweigh the bad? I think it does. This technology sounds like the way to Utopia. I would gladly sacrifice my individuality to rid the world of all these things mentioned.

REALLY! will everyone stay on topic of AGI and read the ENTIRE thread!

"HIM"?....now we got a bible thumper in the mix.

-get off ATS and go to church!-

real CONS rely on facts and so far we have ideas of god creeping in....

robotics are real physical matter than we can prove exists... I like that!and I'm going to try and "LIVE" forever. not die and be a spirit forever! what is the difference anyways, the physical boundaries? there will not be any at the rate this is going
................and that's where the problem is!

That all depends.

I don't think we ever faced absolute enslavement, with no turning back before. And the idea of our creation becoming the dominant species is totally new.

Historically, in any of this context, we had the atomic bomb. The bombs wouldn't simply blow them selves up out of some agenda. But we could have been enslaved by them, to a certain extent, and we were. The world was. Mutually Assured Destruction set the USSA and the USSR on the path to terrifying their own citizens and the world into massive nuclear arms production, and military industrial complex dictatorial power.

The systems built them to fight other systems was the difference. But we were still enslaved by them via fear. They didn't come right out and say 'we'll blow you up if you don't comply', they didn't have to because they had THE ENEMY to do it for them. Each "side" used the same propaganda tactics in scaring their own populations. John Pilger made an excellent film showing this:

Google Video Link

Today we're faced with simply being integrated into the system, especially via neuro-invasive nanobots (my greatest fear). We also face the inherent reality where we'll have to integrate into the machine collective to not be annhilated.

It comes down to how much damage can it cause... especially while factoring in the potential tyranny the system building it can cause. Aside from AGI, technology is technology. If tyrants are building gas chamber concentration camps, it's time to cut off the 'progress'.

I couldn't agree with you more.

this thread has been interesting from the start!
technology and mankind could be a good combination if used in the correct manner. There has to be a line drawn and have sets of rules to follow that are fair and balanced.

But,I see also just what could happen on the flip side.

......porn.....
that might be the first thing to go because of the new "system" and "them" keeping tabs on you. I have a friend who is a film star and he would lose his awesome job!sucks for him but the average Joe won't have any say in any stipulations or regulations to their own rules,ya know?

there are a multitude of others but are all bad things which I shall not share....

all we have to remember in all this is not to let anything totally control our individuality and well being as a human.

Haha, I know you're joking, but you also make a good point.

But in my mind, in a hive-mind scenario... we wouldn't need porn. In a way, we would never need anything again.

And as far as "retaining humanity". Why would losing our humanity be a bad thing? Sure, we're homo sapiens now, but if you subscribe to Darwinism, we were once Cro Magnon. Perhaps, we won't LOSE our humanity, but TRANSCEND it instead.
