"Unemployment: Congress Has Never Before Dropped Extended Benefits With Jobless Rate So High

Though the jobs crisis shows few signs of abating and the unemployment rate continues to hover near 10 percent, Congress allowed extended unemployment benefits to expire at the beginning of June, causing so far more than 1.2 million long-term unemployed to miss checks.

During normal times, state provide 26 weeks of unemployment benefits for workers laid off through no fault of their own. Federally-funded extended benefits have given the unemployed additional weeks during eight recessions since the 1950s. If Congress fails to reauthorize the current round of extra jobless aid, it will be the first time since then that extended benefits have been allowed to expire when the national unemployment rate is above 7.2 percent.

"This is both unfair to the unemployed, who face a historically difficult situation through no fault of their own, and economically unwise as it threatens the prospect of a strong and sustainable recovery," says a new report from the National Employment Law Project and the Center for American Progress. "The consequences are obviously dire for those Americans out of work, and could be equally devastating for employed Americans who are counting on a sustained economic recovery to keep their jobs and boost their earnings."

The report shows that in previous recessions -- in 1973, for example -- extended benefits have been left in place until unemployment dropped to as low as 5 percent."

As bad as Democratic politicians are, as least they understand fundamental humanity somewhat, and Republicans demonstrate all the time that they are deaf, dumb, and blind, when it comes to basic human decency.

The recent vote on extending unemployment insurance to millions of Americans who will now either starve, go on welfare, or have to go beg, or just die, as all the Senate Republicans voted against the extensions in this 10 percent unemployment recession.

It is going to be a tragedy when the stupid American people AGAIN vote in the Republicans

Research the crap the Dems added to the bill...tax cuts for corporations, tax hikes on US oil companies, etc...they do this because they know the Repubs won't approve it, so they can call them the bad guys...like you are doing now!
They vote on an unemployment extension every 30 days it seems like. And it always gets turned down...then the watered-down version always gets approved.

It's all a sham, Democrats and Republicans are the SAME, and you are caught in the paradigm - exactly where they want you to be BTW

I wonder are any of you unemployed?

And since when do Republicans worry about budget deficits? Of course if the money goes to killing brown people in the middle east, then they dont give a dam

But when money goes to any poor or middle class people then they start complaining about budgets.

Democrats may understand humanity, but at least Republicans understand money doesn't grow on trees.

We're broke. Didn't you get the memo?

Republicans are merely insisting that these benefits are paid for from an actual fund instead of just piling up more and more debt with absolutely no hope of paying it off.

The issue should be putting people back to work, not planning on supporting them for the next 2 years.

The republicans didn't vote on the extension because the Democrats filled it full of pork!

"It also included dozens of tax breaks sought by business lobbyists, and tax increases on domestically produced oil and on investment fund managers."

TELL OVER A MILLION PEOPLE WITH MOUTHS TO FEED TO RELAX!

Again I ask where were the republican deficit hawks when the money went to killing people in the middle east with the fake Iraq war?

Understanding basic economics doesn't erase sympathy for the people in need of these benefits. However, we can not continue to support all of these Americans with no end in sight.

In case you don't know, those of us that are lucky enough to still be working are bringing in less money overall. Yes, there are exceptions, however, incomes overall are down.

We are piling up more people in need of benefits with less people able to contribute to said need.

See the problem?

Instead of passing ridiculous legislation designed solely to cost us more money to live, perhaps the government should first focus on putting people back to work.

How many of the last trips round the world that Obama and his crew took were for the benefit of putting people back to work?

That's what I thought.

It's not as simple as that, sadly. We have absolutely NO control over who gets to run. We are only given the option of choosing the lesser of two evils (lesser by perhaps .00001%). As easy as it sounds to vote bad out and good in, it's impossible. The game is rigged long before Americans are given the chance to "appear" as if they choose.

In my opinion, the Republicans sense the economic recovery beginning to to work and they FEAR it will affect the election in November.

When folks ARE employed, they are PAYING into this fund. Its OUR OWN money for US for when we DESPERATELY need it. But Republicans consider those who need their money BACK during hard times are just LAZY WORTHLESS SLACKERS!!!!

This money THAT IS OURS, then goes BACK INTO THE ECONOMY to stimulate it!!!!!

This extension would HAVE ONLY ADDED LESS THAN .0005 % to the debt.

LESS THAN .0005!!!!

Republicans are SCUM folks.

Perhaps they are now wearing Democratic masks since the budget has ballooned even more under Obama? Maybe they are hiding in Yemen?

Seriously, we are so past making this Bush's problem. It's a joint effort by the left and right to completely demolish the U.S. and make us all completely dependent upon the government for survival.

The democrats would chalk up a win -- they love entitlement programs and dependent citizens -- and the right would chalk up a win -- the military is always hiring.

See -- they both benefit.
Let's move on from the blame game.

I'm with you, I think unemployment should be extended, and it will when the democrats can revise their bill to take all the BS out of it!

This is politics at it's finest. The Dem's know that they are in trouble come November and are throwing out all the punches!

I have reason to tell you to relax. This has been happening for at least 6 months, and they ALWAYS end up passing the extension. It ALWAYS fails first (because of the add-ons), and then it ALWAYS passes...after the Dems make the Repubs look like jack arses. They aren't going to take your check, it's all politics.

If you would at the very least study the left-right paradigm I assure you your blood pressure would drop!

False left/right paradigm for beginners

(I'm only trying to help, but I'm quickly beginning to think this thread is a bash Repubs thread...yawn)

That's .0005% more than we have in case you didn't know.

Your name says it all...

Anyone who thinks there's even been a tick upward in the economy since the collapse need to not even worry about politics or the economy until they can understand it better.

Guy, read my post, I said the Dems also have problems, but one must concede at least they give lip service to humanity, the Republicans WILL STARVE YOU TO DEATH!

This is not blame, its REALITY.

I damm the dems when they blanketly support Israel, coddle criminals, and want to stop people from having guns in self-defense.

What some of us dont see is that what these politicians do AFFECT OUR LIVES.

There you go! Now you are seeing the big picture! The Democrats and the Republicans are the same. This is the illusion so many don't see!

I got a kick out of all the talking heads this morning arguing against the "double dip recession" fear mongering as they called it.

Their most convincing argument was that there wouldnt be a double-dip because there has benn no recovery from the original one.

Coming straight from the same mouths who last week claimed recovery was here to stay.
