I think it would be highly advisable to have a kill switch. Imagine, any terrorist organization could wire up a bunch of bombs all around this country, in apartments, homes, wherever internet access would be available. Then, they could escape back to their middle eastern hole in the ground and then remotely control and detonate these bombs, all at once, or one at a time. There would be no way you could stop it from happening without a kill switch.
Flawed argument, you could kill access to the rigged computers. If you killed access to the entire internet, you'd cause more damage than you can imagine...so what's better?

How on Earth would you know 1) where those rigged up computer would be, and 2) their IP address? Many people have devices already wired up in their home to turn on/off the lights, etc., and you're telling me the government could find out FAST where such (similar) devices are now located? .. NOT! All you'd have to do is hook your bomb up to such a system instead of a lamp!

ARE YOU F$%^(G KIDDING ME?

Give OBAMA a kill swtich? Why not just wrap up what little freedom we have left and attach it to the next missile they fire in to afghanistan?
DO YOU NOT READ ANYTHING ON THIS SITE?

The internet is our quickest way to let the world know what is going on - you don't really think that when armageddon presents itself the authorities will tell the public do you? NO - THAT WILL CAUSE MASS PANIC, why would you want to shut down the only really effective way of news leaking out to let people know what is going on?

You are worried that conspiracy theories and scare tactics will run rampant on the internet? WHAT LIKE NOW? Nobody listens anyway - but at least it gives a chance to some who listen and research. I really have to question your motives...

DENY IGNORANCE!

EDIT to add: AND WHY OBAMA???? Seriously give it to anyone - hell give it to kim jong ill before you give it to Obama - Obama will likely have more warning than anyone in the world and more info on what the threat is, and will be one of the most protected people on earth should the SHTF - why would you trust what could be your last hope with someone who will already probably be on another planet we never knew existed sittin back sippin champangne and waitin for the fireworks?
OBAMA sorry but OBAMA *Slaps forehead* just when I think the world is slowly opening it's eye's and there is a glimmer of hope - someone stands up and says "Lets give OBAMA the kill switch"
Seriously man, this guy is not the saviour we are all looking for - because he is already in power and nothing has changed - stop putting faith in people who dont desserve it and take you destiny in to your own hands while you still have some FREEDOM to be able to. And one more thing AMERICA DOES NOT RUN THIS WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
F%^&* I GIVE up im gonna go start diggin a hole... catch ya

ALSO WANT YOU TO KNOW MY COMMENTS ARE NOTHING PERSONAL - ITS BECAUSE I CARE ABOUT YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE THAT I GET SO FRUSTRATED

To be honest, I think it'd be 10x harder to coordinate a shutting down of the internet, then it would to find those computers. They are smart, they'll figure which computers are rigged if they had to. If they aren't aware of the attack, well there's nothing they can do in any case is there? But as I said, suddenly shutting down the internet like that would cause a lot more damage than a cyber based terrorist attack like that would ever do.

We need to give Barack Obama the internet Killswitch.I have encountered many psychopaths on the internet. If a huge emergency happens there will be many people spreading dis info on websites like this. Lets say for example new york city was to get nuked or something awful, you would have people on this website trying to say that it is a false flag, probably the same people saying that 9/11 was. That is not good in a time of chaos. Sometimes the internet rumors get out of hand and in a national emergency we would all need to work together, not conjure up lies on the internet.

Am I the only person on this website that agrees with the killswitch??

I hope you don't need or use the internet for anything important?

How could anyone who uses the internet be for the killswitch?

More proof of if you lead a sheep to the slaughter using hopes f fame a fortune as when you get there you're in the boiler about to be cooked. My, my how stupid have people become?

Troll alert! Troll alert! Do us all one huge favour, go back into the hole you crawled out of and leave us internet loving people alone.

BTW, 9/11 was a false flag operation, the single largest power grab since the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. Tea Bagger plant!

Hook, line, sinker, SUNK!

They would have to be quicker than some idiot pressing the ENTER key. Nope, this could be initiated and over with before anyone even realized what just happened. And, what about the phone network? How could they tell if some terrorist has a bomb wired to a cell or land line phone? Nah, we need a kill switch.

Oh...so basically, you're saying we should make it a game of who can press a button quicker, both of which would cause major damage?

It's like saying...someone could place explosives throughout the world trade centers or fly into them and destroy them...so we should just place our own rig that lets us instantly demolish the world trade centers so such an attack can't take place? My house could fall down due to termites eating away at support beams...does that mean I should just remove all the support beams before it happens? Is there not a better method of solving the problem...in fact, I could die any moment...so why not just kill myself now and save the trouble eh?

what if... terrorist did this
what if ... terrorist did that

So, if we give the president the power to effectively shut off the Internet, then we are making him the most powerful person on the planet. If used, the world will be paralyzed until he deems it okay to allow access to return.

I wonder if there's going to be any sort of Internet act that happens, maybe to the banking industry, that's in the media enough to rally public support behind this idea. That seems to be the way they do things for other causes.

We live in scary times!

What are you talking about? I don't think they mean a switch that would ACTUALLY kill and thus render the internet permanently dead forever switch. Simply, the POTUS should have a switch that could disable all communications, internet and phone, for however long it would take to get a handle on such a situation I mentioned. Imagine the pickle we would be in if suppose some terrorists had a dozen nukes wired up around the country connected to the internet under their control and command, and they began demanding the USA surrender to them or POOF, cities disappearing one by one, until we had no choice but to surrender. You think your NEED to communicate with your friends and family and/or to sell t-shirts on eBay or need to view internet porn or whatever should have higher priority over the security of this nation?

I wouldn't be pleased at all to loose all communications in such an event, but I certainly can recognize and understand the necessity of having to do so if and when such a thing became necessary.

In this instance, I don't see this as being related to taking our freedoms away. It is simply a temporary shutdown. And besides, using your logic, we must have had no freedoms before the internet and phones.

Wow, so there's actually people that would be for it. Why don't you think it thru a little more, if done, and yeah I'm only speaking of a temporary shutdown, it would paralyze the global economy, and incite chaos worldwide. Utter chaos would ensue. And, I'm not speaking of someone not being able to log on to Twitter! Most media, and communication would cease, as would I also expect any trade that didn't involve only cash transactions. I'm sure there are other companies that would be affected as well. And, you're thinking of giving this power to one president? That's insane. Period.

If you end freedom of speech, you end democracy with it.

A kill Switch is a horrible idea.

I realize that, but you can't simply just disable the internet at a moments notice...imagine all the businesses that would suffer massive loss of profits during the outages...and like power outages, I assume companies will want compensation for their losses...imagine all the services that would instantly become unavailable...imagine all the people that that require medical help but are unable to establish communications with anyone...imagine the computer freaks that would absolutely lose it when their internet doesn't work...imagine the Y2K-like scenario that could break loose...if I were a terrorist, the best possible attack would be to disable the internet completely...people would be screwed...people are simply to reliant on the internet and other forms of communication...I seriously doubt anyone will ever posses the power to disable the internet...if it ever does happen, I will be officially embarrassed to be of the same race such a naive species...

most likely they would just use a suicide bomber with no internet involved

what else could we put kill switches on just in case.

First of all, could someone outline just how the 'killswitch' would work?

We are talking about the Internet right? It was created to withstand such attacks?

To agree with banning something because some people may interpret information delivered by the Internet in a specific way is to believe that others have the right to decide what you can and can not observe/experience.

Fear...fear...fear...

We agree to lose some of your freedoms because we do not want the enemy to take our freedoms away.

Madness.

Exactly, that's the point I was trying to make with the world trade centers and my house, a few posts ago. You could place a kill switch on many things in anticipation of attack, but in the end, it's only unfounded fear with a reality of little attack...resulting in someone with way too much power, and not enough to do with it...we would be moronic to let it happen...absolutely insane, crazy, mentally ill idiots...

EDIT: Grammar
