I have been a huge fan of the horror adventure and survival horror genre since i started gaming. I remember the late dos/windows 3.1 era when games were pretty much allowed to do whatever they want. I think even today games like Phantasmagoria and Harvester would still get a lot of crap and get banned in some countries. If you have not played harvester you should check it out, it reminds me of what a movie would be like if Quentin Tarantino and David Lynch made something together. What was the scariest/twisted video game you ever played?

For sheer anticipation and dread I'd have to say one of the early Aliens Vs Predator games where you play the useless marine. From memory the graphics were nowhere near the standard of todays games but the 'feel' of it with the little torch-light and the dark areas, knowing that you were about to be pounced on made it a really atmospheric experience..

For me I would say either DOOM or the 1st Resident Evil.
Resident Evil was the 1st of it's kind and with fixed camera positions that only switched when you moved meant sometimes you could hear a zombie scraping along the floor but you couldn't see him until you moved forward. That anticipation made it very suspenseful and a little frightening

Resident Evil was definitely one of the better survival horror games, the directors cut was awesome. The Second one was okay but after that they kind of turned into zombie themed action games.

Yeah I would have to go for Res Evil 1, the bit near the start were the dogs jump through the windows made me jump.

Also Doom 3 was good for shock scares. Specifically if you look through a random vent close to the floor somewere, a creature crawls out really fast to make you jump, but you'd miss it if you didn't look in the vent.

The first Resident Evil on Playstation I was groundbreaking, nothing like it had ever been seen up to that point.

I remember my brother and I playing that game late into the night for days on end, and the creeking doors and wierd monsters were chilling because you never knew what was waiting around the next bend.

Anybody remember the part where you were walking outside and all of a sudden it cut to this first person perspective of some monster and you could watch it running full speed up behind you while you were making a run for the door?

Spooky.

Dont know if anyones played system shock 2.

I found it a bit freaky to be honest back in the day.

The camera angles, the mystery aspect to the story, the sound effects, the baddies, atmosphere etc. Perfect for its time, one of those games I hated playing in case I got a fright but had to come back out of curiosity once my toilet roll supply was replenished

Have a peek but its best played, its still pretty scary if you play it through and get into it properly...

Sanitarium was pretty twisted. Not necessarily scary, but crazy. RE1 was probably the most spooked I've ever been in a game.

Then there was Thrill Kill.. I can't even comment how messed up that game was.

I would have to agree with thrill kill....that was pretty bizzare

Silent hill...the first one was kinda spooky to

For me it was probably Doom and Duke Nukum (What can I say I was a wimp).

But also some genuinely creepy games were The 7th Guest and it's sequel The 11th Hour.

I also found the original Half Life a little creepy at times. When the accident first happens and that eerie sounding klaxon....

Silent Hill also was spooky.

The first resident evil. I tried playing it by myself one night. When I saw the creature run across the window in the background, I freaked and threw the remote control and never played it again.

Yes the 7th guest and 11th hour were cool, definatly a good freaky atmosphere. I loved those puzzles and if it would run on my PC now I would definalty be playing it now.

I have yet to see anyone come up with a video game as scary or tense as this one.

And the graphics.... well how much closer to real life can you get than this...:shk:

Warning: .....graphic......

Yes, basically, but good ones. They were the only 2 in the series I think.
You move around the rooms in a mansion and solves little puzzles that are scattered all over the place.
The 7th guest, the mansion is all nice looking and furbished.
The 11th hour, must be 10 years or so down the line because the same mansion is run down, dark and dingy. They are very creepy games, they use live action cut scenes (which to be honest I didn't care for, it seemed too much like one of those old American soap's like Dynasty or something).

But the atmoshpere as your walking/clicking your way around the house is great, in both games.
