I usually open image in a new window so all the google stuff is eliminated and I get just the link to the pic..

While editing ... Click on 'Image' -button. Next supply the linky - "copy image location" - that linky is really producing actual pics elsewhere...

You have to use a a proper host, such as imageshack, or my favourite imgur, you get the "Link To External Image" because ATS is a high traffic site so its to protect websites, that don't want hotlinking, from the high bandwidth ATS could generate from showing the image directly.

So utilizing wordpress sorage somehow generates more unwanted traffic than imageshack? Cant believe that.

It generates unwanted traffic for the site you're hotlinking to, ATS only whitelists certain hosts. It works with imageshack because their sole purpose is to host images.
