It appears to me that the oil is going to wash up in waves. This satellite image from NASA reveals how the oil is lining up in waves.

Man, I feel pretty sick seeing the globs in the wave.

My children and I were discussing this oil spill the other day. How much damage this was doing to earth. They asked me what we can do to help.

I replied that we could go down there and volunteer to wash animals, scrape beach, or think of ways to plug the hole. We could consume less oil by taking the bus, riding our bikes, etc etc. My kids are young. Under 10.

I ended up explaining that all this happened because some people care more for the paper in their wallets than for each other or earth. And we MAKE the paper!

Sad. I didn't mean to lean on that tangent but that is where I taught them that people and the environment are more important than the paper in our wallets. I hope this helps the future in some small way.

Waves of oil.

Disgusting. Thanks BP.

Thank you for the info in the post, OP.

With that, however, I have to just say..

"Apocalypse" means to reveal. not some destructive doomsday stuff that's been tied to the word lol

Just a personal peeve lol

More like lifting the veil. But most understand the word apocalypse as large, catastrophic destruction, most likely a global event.

If you don't believe this is a horrible environmental (and economic) catastrophe, I suggest you join this great festival and eat as much shrimp as you can!

There's a huge difference between natural oil spills that appear gradually and not all at once (and which nature adapted to), and what BP did to the environment!! How can you downplay this incredible catastrophe...it's an economic catastrophe too, just look at how much hotel bookings in affected areas all the way to Florida went down.

Actually YOU CANNOT HELP LOADS of volunteers are turned away BP is carefully orchestrating clean-up effort using sub-contractor/s. You PERHAPS get a paying job but you would need drivers license and residency from whatever State you attempt to work also 40 hour hazmat course.

I research this

"Apocalypse" actually refers to a very real and very specific event that happened to a community in what is now Israel. Their village's name was similar to the word apocalypse and for hundreds of years they prepared for their own demise. They knew it would happen, and they knew their preparations were in vain, but they did it anyway and eventually they were slaughtered. The account of their fate was passed down in Hebrew lore and eventually found its way into the Bible, and apocalypse is now synonymus with EOW scenarios.

Now, as for the Oil in the Gulf, Apocalpse is not an exaggeration by any means. It will affect sea life for many years, it will affect weather patterns, it will affect fragile breeding grounds and wetlands, it will affect economies and housing.

Food, sustenance, and livelihoods are all made from the sea. The Gulf fiasco will certainly effect Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisianna, but it may also affect the Atlantic, the Caribbean, and even Europe! The oil sheen could cause a reduction in evaporation and create droughts in Europe and Africa. The solar heat blanket created by the oil could push the Gulf Waters to record highs this year and for the next several years, "super" hurricanes could result from the high temps, and those storms will aggravaate the situation by churning the oily water and spreading it further inland and across the surface of the Gulf.

I could type another 5 pages of "what-if" scenarios, but the point here is just to reiterate that "apocalypse" is not a far-fetched suggestion, especially when speaking only of the Gulf Coasts!

Crude Oil isn't only extracted for its fuel contents... So don't forget to stop buying them or yourself plastic toys, stuft animals, tubes of toothpaste, tooth brushes, video games, computers, printers, ink cartridges, LCD monitors (especially!), CD's-DVD's-VHS tapes & players, TV's, color photos, kiddie pools, 'water wings', swimming pool "noodles", bicycle helmets, bikes with paint or any other plastic parts on them (like seats), digital clock radios, beds, Nerf guns, squirt bottles, pretty much anything from a 'gags & gifts' or 'party supply' shop, balloons, Easter 'schwag', Halloween costumes, polyester / nylon clothing & bedding, rollerblades, skateboard wheels, speed boats, waterboards, most surf boards, all boogie boards, life jackets, snow boarding equipment, 'moon boots', snow suits, 'aqua socks', spandex, pens, sunglasses, couches, non-metal watches, most backpacks, most shoes, all camping tents & most camping gear, most sports gear and safety equipment, any food or CANDY packaging that uses foam or plastic, foam dish scrubbers, plastic dishes (any of them), zip lock bags, plastic sandwhich bags, lunch boxes, tupperware / Rubbermade containers, Thermos's, toddler-proof home safety devices, baby bottles, disposable diapers, pacifiers, baby monitors, strollers, Little Tikes cars and 'houses', Power Wheels, easy bake ovens, radio flyer wagons with that shiny red paint, "big wheels", baby oil or baby powder (I've never seen these come in any bottle besides plastic), rattles, fishing tackle, slingshots, CARPET, PAINT, vinyl siding, plastic patio furniture, weed whackers, lawn mowers, toasters, microwaves, blenders, George Foreman Grill's, trendy posters, science fair projects, counter-table top laminates or clearcoats, magazines, Slip'N Slides, headphones, flashlights, board games, trading cards, Lego's, medicine bottles... OR MCDONALDS HAPPY MEALS!!!!!

...or things like using the services at any hospitals, school (desks), laminated book covers or laminated ANYTHING, glossy color ink, don't mail order anything because virtually all shipping boxes contain plastic or foam of some kind, Chucky Cheese, Disney World, airplanes, water parks, movie theaters (movie theater seats, screens & film), lobby against NASA and all future space travel...

SHALL I GO ON???

Proposing we give up oil completely is basically more absurd than proposing we give up computers completely.

I believe this incident is Revealing to humanity that we cannot continue our current course of action against our Earth.

We are living 'revelations' right now. We'll see more revelations as the moments tick by.

Thanks. I had to edit it to add a few things, in particular McDonald's HAPPY MEALS!

This is the tragedy, that is, everyone being cheap and buying CRAP products from China that break in no time. Kids in particular break basically EVERYTHING, and all of that goes into a landfill someplace.

I think all this playing with semantics is just a transparent way to try and divert the thread from the real catastrophe that is about to engulf the region.

The coastal gulf areas will soon be unlivable. The people will be relocated.
Katrina was small potatoes compared to this. Economically this will affect global markets. Socially this will be a milestone much like 911.

And it's just begun. It may take years for us to realize the impact of this disaster.

Remember Chernobyl?

Perhaps some need to review this....www.abovetopsecret.com...

FYI: Natural bacteria eats crude oil into oblivion.

NUCLEAR RADIATION kills bacteria.

Products made from crude oil are literally thousands of times worse for the environment than natural crude oil.

Short term: MAJOR problems.
Long term: What was the name of that oil spill again?

Agree. And, I would go one step further and say that people will study this event 1000 years from now.

Next month the relocation's will begin to get people away from the toxic dispersant s that were used. Whole towns will have to be abandoned and patrolled by LEOs and guardsmen in hasmat suits. The smell will be unbearable with the enormous death of birds and sea life that will be washed up.

A new Governmental agency will be established much like the Dept. of Homeland security. The thinktanks have been told to drop everything to devote full time to this problem; social, scientific, economic and political.

It's going to get much worse before the problems can even begin to be addressed.

I really don't blame those that want to minimize the problem. If I lived in the region and had emotional and financial attachments; I'm sure I would do the same thing. I also would be making preparations to leave.

So sensitive.
The notion that my interest in proper word usage has the power to divert this thread from the truly catastrophic event in the gulf is silly at best. Lighten up. I recognize the vastness of the Gulf oil spill as well as anyone else, however it is still not, nor will it ever be an apocalypse--based upon the meaning of the words.

tamale.

I am afraid 100 year is it

& this is why as ignoranceisntbliss point out EVERYTHING is plastic look around your living quarters! For example I smoke cigs not good I KNOW yet what is celophane wrapper? Petrol derivative! why not a better eco package? can you make it just paper and seal with wax? NO not cost effective and still will have petrol (for wax) POLAND SPRING brag about eco bottle OKAY what about cardboard NO NOT COST EFFICIENT so bottle end up in huge floating plastic islands in Ocean, Big wheels, lawn chair, boogey board, kids toys all floating in the OCEANS....GOOGLE IT

& now we have all these economic battles with China making stuff with plastics at unbelievable rates and no one really complains about that. SO what have we now a world literally swimming in oil not just Macondo blowout Volcano if you would like the pressure is too high for a RW cement job so damn oil will blow and blow and blow....Not a wake up call for the GOM but a death sentence...

It's very sad you know and all we can do is think DO NOT DRIVE A CAR! drink water out of glass, buy a used toy or no toy at all, glass bottle instead of plastic, and it is about limiting for now what else can be expected. In America i see most vehicle is road chariot SUV.....and so NO world will probably die unless everyone starts thinking.

POOR ODRAMA what can he do? NOTHING

sigh I will leave you with this and watch a movie on my plastic(petrol) computer!

JBL= petrol criminal GUILTY OF CRIMES against nature.
