IDF: Hamas stops flotilla aid delivered by Israel

www.cnn.com

Israel has attempted to deliver humanitarian aid from an international flotilla to Gaza, but Hamas -- which controls the territory -- has refused to accept the cargo, the Israel Defense Forces said Wednesday.

Palestinian sources confirmed that trucks that arrived from Israel at the Rafah terminal at the Israel-Gaza border were barred from delivering the aid.

I know everyone has an opinion on Israel. I realize that Palestine is treated like crap by Israel. Obviously, Israel is ridiculously stupid for attacking the aid ship.

BUT, is Palestine just as stupid? I understand the whole thing about 'pride' and not accepting something from the enemy, but the people are in trouble. Accept what you can get. If Israel is condemned for blocking aid, Hamas should be as well!

Interesting development this is.

Its obvious as to why Hamas would do this. If they accept aid proffered from Israel, (whether or not it originated there) they would be legitimising what Israel is doing with the blockade.

Secondly, this would also sow division and discord within the Palestinian authorities. Exactly what the Israelis want.

Thirdly, the Israelis have cynically done this because either way for them it's a win win. They win if the Palestinians accept the aid, they win if they don't. It's a PR no-brainer for them to perform this role.

This is never about 'pride' or 'charity' - this is POLITICS, pure and simple.

Don't forget it would also mean Hamas would have to recognize Israel as a nation...something they do not want to do.

So it has nothing to do with the fact that Israel blocked outside aid by attacking people in international waters?

Israel could hand it over to Egypt who I heard have now opened their border with Gaza. Then the Pale's can go get it from Egypt. Would that save face ?

From the article

Ra'ed Fatooh, in charge of the crossings, and Jamal Khudari, head of a committee against the Gaza blockade, said Israel must release all flotilla detainees and that it will be accepted in the territory only by the Free Gaza Movement people who organized the flotilla.

So that's the crux of it. As Parallex mentioned above, this is a political maneuver, clearly. However, I think they have mis-played their cards on this one. This whole fiasco is centered on the fact that there is a humanitarian crisis. Any interference is going to be seen as a hostile act, plain and simple.

I do not agree that this was a lose-lose for Hamas. Accepting the aid from Israel would have been perfectly understood by even hardline activists. After all, the aid came from humanitarians, not their occupiers. On the contrary, they could have spun this to their great advantage, if they played their cards right. If they made a point that Israel was being forced to deliver the aid against their will, then Hamas accepting that aid could be seen as accepting Israel' conceding to their own wrongdoing in keeping said aid from them.

I would like to know the reasoning behind this, I heard the report also, however the reason was not given- Im certain there is one, it just isnt being brodcast. Got one version- I would like the other

I find it shameful that people must remain hungry, sick, and desperate while those who are 'leaders' play games.....

It's one thing to shame Israel over their ridiculously heavy-handed approach to the situation, but it is another to remain intransigent to the effort to relay the aid because it might interfere with righteous outrage.

This entire region needs a spiritual enema.

Maybe the trucks are full of swine-flu vaccinations and flouride for the water treatment plants
Just kidding.

It may be because Israelis are notorious for contaminating and or poisoning anything that the Palestinians would consume.
It is virtually SOP for the IDF to defecate into Palestinians water supplies, to be frank I would not take any form of aid that has gone through their hands as it more than likely poisoned.

It’s a real shame, there are some wonderful people Israeli Citizens who want peace yet they are vastly out numbered by the ruling Nazi Party.

I realize this is a political move, and have accepted the possibility that Hamas fears it may be poisoned, but without the aid, people will die anyway, so are Palestenians not better off accepting it in the end.

EDIT: They are only hurting their own people and perhaps if they accept the aid, it could send the message to the world that Israel really understands the extent of the humanitarian crisis, whether or not they want to officially acknowledge it.

America once gave smallpox blankets to the native Indians; who's to say Israel wouldn't do the same?

The entire region is in need of a swift kick in the ass, people's lives are cast aside in the name of politics far too blatantly but frankly, I agree with Hamas' decision here. Israeli leaders do not have their faces spit in nearly enough.

I don't think any of the motives stated here hits the bullseye.

I think that Hamas did not accept it on purpose to help with Israel's PR.
Hamas is a puppet govt., they will do what is asked for money, just like Egypt.
