No, those symbols are absolutely worthless.

I remember growing up, and I remember the people who had such great respect for the American flag. The majority of them could not describe to you the difference between a republic and a democracy. They did not know the difference between natural rights, human rights, civil rights, and Constitutional rights...and were incapable of telling you which ones were the most important.

Most of the people that I know who blindly equate a Country with nothing more than a flag, are usually the same people who have never even read the Federalist Papers or the AntiFederalist Papers.

The people who blindly defend superficial symbols cannot even tell you what our forefathers said because half of them don't even know that they wrote their thoughts down. On top of the fact that most flag-defenders don't know that the majority of our forefathers were deists and that their philosophical outlooks grew out of the Enlightenment period of their time.

Do we know anything more about this press conference. Why was it held. What was the location? Could it have been an impromptu press conference in which there was no readily available flag?

Also are we sure this is the FIRST EVER happening? How can we be sure of this unless we see pictures of every single press conference and verify there was a flag present.

I'm not doubting it, I'm just saying we should get to the bottom of it before we start shouting "treason" and "impeach him" and yelling at eachother like children.

You do realize that Hitler's Nazi Germany was a Socialist state right? And that Worship of the German flag and German Pride were required by law. They Were a group of extremely patriotic people and being unpatriotic was punishable by incarceration. This Idea that not being nationalistic (which I pretty much equate with ignorance) is associated with socialism does not really make sense.
The flag was extremely important to the soviets during the soviet era. A socialist or communist state will try to replace religion with patriotism ok and Goerge W. Bush was trying to march you there. Wake the # up and think about what you say, and think about what you believe. High levels of Patriotism are almost a prerequisite for socialism. ug

Hmmm, Interesting. I would like to point out the fact that he is wearing an American flag lapel on his coat. Does that not count? Is it not big enough of a flag? Call it a hunch but something tells me that assuming the president of the US, is quite fond of the US..... No matter who they may be...

That said, I must ask the OP, and all those who continue to insist on using the president's full name as if it is some how going to eventually make us afraid of him.... Do you refer to everyone by their full name like that, or just the people with the Muslim sounding names? With all due respect, it is time to move past that.

You do realize that you are now simply battling Nationalism against Nationalism. I highly doubt that anyone within these United States prior to the Civil War cared about the flag. They were probably more worried about their natural rights and property to care what someone did with something that does not even matter.

This is why the republic is dead.

This is what we get for allowing our governing leaders to be leaders of more than just our country.

I agree. I'm not exactly sure but I would think if he refused to use the flag then he would make sure to also remove it from his lapel rather than place it there specifically. I'm sure there's a reason why the standing flag was not used.

You bring up an interesting point about the name thing. I don't know it just rings. Kind of like Franklin Delano Roosevelt or Pamela Lee Anderson. I didn't realize so many were offended by his middle name, I'm not.

I would also like to point out that flag-worship and Nationalism were born out of the 19th century during the Romantic period of art and philosophy. The romantic period was a time when people became obsessed with emotion and sensation as opposed to logic and reason like its predecessor the Enlightenment period. I have always found it extremely ironic that Americans today will worship their flag the same way any communist Country did, but the moment someone does not worship their flag they will accuse them of being communists.

Its really ironic.

I think people seriously need to wake up and study history to find out what philosophies shaped the American republic, because it definitely was not initially ignorant Nationalism.

You Americans are amazingly hung up on ceremony sometimes. Not all of you, but a lot of you. Impeachable offense? That's the funniest thing I've heard all day!

I'm going to ask for a source on this one. Do we know for certain yet that there was actually no floor-standing flag in the room, and not just one off camera?

If it does turn out there was not a flag, well guess what it's a bloody flag. The Stars & Stripes is no different than the Union Jack, they are just symbols for their respective nations. In religious terms these would be called idols. The ideas and people behind those symbols will always be far more important and real than the symbols.

These are metaphorical tools to show support (or dissent) for a given nation, that is all. The flag itself has no intrinsic value beyond that which we assign to it.

Calling this an impeachable offense or some part of a crazy Communist conspiracy are absolutely lunatic. With regards to your upcoming Memorial Day, if you want to fight for your flag be my guest you nutter, but I'll give a great deal of thanks to the Americans whom have fought for the ideas and morals that made your country great.
