Please stop believing that aliens are motivated by the same things you are.

If there are such things as aliens out there, and they managed to figure out how to get from one star to another without it taking thousands of years, it's hard to imagine what their motivations would be about anything. Most things that are "alive" as we define it, have a tendency to want to live and reproduce. That's about it. We humans even do it, and don't really even think about why. We don't even understand our own motivations.

Going by our past history, though, I can imagine that as long as they don't immediately kill us or enslave us, we'd try to do with them what we do with any other group we find. We try to establish trade and we try to sell them religion.

It might not be a good idea to directly fight them until we figure out more about them, and get on a comparable technological level, if possible. If their ships are powered or controlled by some mental connection to the 5th dimension or some other crazy thing, we might just be out of luck.

If there are any aliens out there, that is. I'm not sure it's as simple as that.

An interesting point...we still see people keep high-tech armies entrenched with homemade weapons, etc.

Basically (much like rebels), we'd attempt to capture comparable gear, and use it against them...

And what of these weapons – if we could even get close to them? How would we recognize them, not to mention use them? It would be bad enough to see our loved ones, property and lands ravaged by weapons that defy any shielding or protection we can devise, never mind trying to work out how they work so we can retaliate.

It is reassuring to assume that alien weaponry would be akin to our own, but what if it isn’t? What if its functions can only be accessed by it recognizing “friendly” DNA? And what if that DNA is silicon based?

Their weaponry may well be the conscious manipulation of the energy - via a neural-net - that permeates the universe; unlimited in scope, and untiring. How would we capture that?

Yes we’d be ruthless in our attempts to strike back, but, against an array of destructive devices that we simply had no way of operating, then our stand would be a short and brutal one.

In that case, we can only hope they recognize our bravery and cut us some slack.

I dont know... But I can think of a few reasons...
Maybe the motovation could have been when 'we' Earthlings shot at them when they flew over L.A.

When our planes chased them numerous times.

And how more or less every abduction encounter results in a small fight.
Things such as the Sutton family incident back in 1955.

Or its in the aliens nature?
They could see us humans as a cancer and Earth as their last salvation of finding a liveable planet...

It is tougth.
But as you said, if they left their planet then there obviouslly exploring, and like us humans, they want to find out if there not alone in this Universe.
