I'm pretty sure that the message, once decoded, will read:
"Don't forget to drink your Ovaltine!"

Haha, yeah, ageing yourself through quotes is a classic. The fact he's a dwarfer says a lot too!

Oops, have I just done it to myself?

It would be cool if it were a message from someone out there .

But considering how computers work and information is sent a error could occur .

10011001 is the basis, binary code . highs and lows of current , and the computer runs on voltage of 1.5v - 5 v depending on type . Light is electricity and many other forms of cosmic radiation are a form of electricity .

For the sake of it if the voyager was bombarded with radiation that penetrated its protective shielding it might have caused a surge in the systems voltage , just like the older computers would crash if you walked across the carpet created static and touched the keyboard zap it crashed .

Changing the 10011001 to 00111110 . The way computers work there really is a lot of things to go wrong . I am leaning to a power surge from some form of cosmic energy caused a error in the transmission data .

from a mental level I think its some error from a burst of energy or energy build up .

But deep down I would like to see it as being a message from another civilization out there .

look it may be ailens but lets look from a logic point of view it can be alies or it may be one corrupted transmission this is the 1st time it has ever happened so if it happens a few more time then yes we can say its aliens

You know I want to bring something to light here although I'm sure it's already been mentioned. If so I'll just reiterate.

When I read this article my first thought was "cool"!!

Then I was filled with a kind of dread.

Lets say just for a second that aliens did find our spacecraft. You must realize that Voyager 2 is not very far away from us right now. It is traveling nowhere near the speed of light and therefore is barely outside of our solar system.

I saw two possible scenarios.

1. Alien life is friendly and they will lead us forward into a new age of technology. They show us better ways of doing things and everyone is all happy in our new Utopian society.

Then the more likely scenario.

2. We exist, therefore the possibility of a culture like ours or worse exists. We take what we want with no regard to anyone but ourselves and our own wants.

That is why I always thought it was idiotic constantly revealing our position to the galaxy. I mean how ready are we really? If we had to defend our entire planet, could we do it?

People cannot forget that there may be races out there far more hostile than us. We have no idea what kind of technology we would be dealing with here.

If they are hostile what would we have that they want? Natural resources maybe? Then what? They trade with us?

I'm sorry but why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free? I know many people will deny this explicitly but really can you forget this scenario is a possibility? We are treading on dangerous waters here, but really it is already too late.

If this is alien there is no doubt they know where we are. Just remember that. Be careful what you wish for.

When I first read this I too had two thoughts.

1. This is one of the coolest things I had ever see on here
2. It will be burried by doubters, ignored by MSM and treated as a joke until it is forgotten. Sad really. Alien signal or not , it deserves attention until we figure it out.

Indeed it does.

Voyager is not far from us so really we won't have long to wait. If it is Alien I'm sure we will find out very very soon. (and hopefully not with a well equipped armada at our doorstep) If it's not, then that's probably good news IMO. (You have no Idea how much I hate to say that.)

In our solar system, the Earth sticks out like a sore thumb. It won't be hard to find.

This is a good point , there must be in the calculations done by that dude , was it sagan ! the number of stars in the milky way around 100 billion , of those 50 million have planets with life , so possibly 50 million civlizations !

of which some have to be lethal /evil barbaric ,

but what about the factor they might not consider , disease here on earth !

just like in war of the worlds

No doubt NASA is tapping, with or with out being asked, cryptologist's of the NSA, the information vacume and practitioner of fung shway. It sound's like a glitch, static with just enough structure to seem like it's a signal with a message. A speaker who sound's good but is BS'ing us.

Most misinterpretation of data is just an a pain. I've never heard of one to be so much fun. If it's a real message, the word fun takes on a whole new meaning.

I agree it is probably a radiation induced power surge. Contacting Earth would not be a prudent decision in my opinion without knowing more about the inhabitants. Just remember a genuine message from aliens would cause a huge upheaval in religious circles and the uninformed. Civilization would devolve in my opinion - the shock would be too great.

So why are you on a thread about voyager 2 and aliens? If we faked the moon landing we
faked voyager 2. If we faked voyager 2 there are no aliens trying to contact us through that vessel.

HAhaha, that's exactly what I thought. The RD quote should be a dead giveaway that I'm an 80's child. Proud of it! =) Hopefully I'm still young enough to see TSHTF in my lifetime.

On topic I think this is very interesting and inspires the imagination. I pray its not something too boring like the explanation they already provide, which most answers usually are.

Have aliens hijacked Voyager 2 spacecraft

www.dailytelegraph.com.au

IT left Earth 33 years ago, now it's claimed the Voyager 2 spacecraft may have been hijacked by aliens after sending back data messages NASA scientists can't decode.
NASA installed a 12-inch disk containing music and greetings in 55 languages in case intelligent extraterrestrial life ever found it.

But now the spacecraft is sending back what sounds like an answer: Signals in an unknown data format!

The best scientific minds have so far not been able to decipher the strange information – is it a secret message?

Alien expert Hartwig Hausdorf said:"It seems almost as if someone ha

i wish they would show us the code. ugh, some one might figure it out, we should put cameras on the next one we send out there lol

Well NASA has offered an explanation - nothing ET about the signal:

One flip of a bit in the memory of an onboard computer appears to have caused the change in the science data pattern returning from Voyager 2, engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said Monday, May 17. A value in a single memory location was changed from a 0 to a 1.

On May 12, engineers received a full memory readout from the flight data system computer, which formats the data to send back to Earth. They isolated the one bit in the memory that had changed, and they recreated the effect on a computer at JPL. They found the effect agrees with data coming down from the spacecraft. They are planning to reset the bit to its normal state on Wednesday, May 19.

Yep, another 80's child here too, lol.

I'd love for this to be aliens, but my logical knowledge of computers can come up with many more plausible and simpler explanations. As I've said before, it's amazing the thing is still working at all. I bet it wouldn't be if it was running Windows

Bearing in mind that this isnt new news, it seems to have been made to look like it is, I want to know why put it in the papers now when this is about 6 weeks old. Voyager first started transmitting wierd data on 6th April 2010

It's disappeared from the MSN because the true explanation is so mundane that they can't sensationalise it into "aliens". That is the only reason it got into the MSN in the first place. Do you really think they would report on "Voyager probe has computer glitch. Transmitting garbage data! NASA baffled."

I'm sure the coverup will be something like:

"Well, we did consider not installing Microsoft Windows ..."
