What's likely to happen is they will drill another hole to intersect with the core "Main hole", then start pumping what oilmen call Kill-wight liquids. then cap it off with cement... you'd be surprised how well a few thousand feet of cement works as a plug...

According to BP it may be another month before this can happen. Meanwhile they are looking at temporary methods to reduce the flow. So the damage this will do looks to be one of the biggest man made disasters of all time. The Exxon Valdeze incident will seem like a footnote in history unless they manage to pull something brilliant off.

If they'd said: Katie lock the door, they probably would have kicked it in. If Katie put a big heavy piece of wood (the bar) all the way across the door where it rested in strong metal brackets, then the door would not be busted down so easily. With serious trouble outside, it's best to bar the door. Katie was just a kid, but she could bar the door while the grownups checked ammo and guns to got ready for a wicked fight.

[A little trivial over clarification in the midst of a mega-disaster.]

Another poster showed a diagram that suggested a 2 to 3 month time frame for that operation. Is that a reasonable assessment? BTW thanks for sharing your expertise. It is much appreciated.

I'm not a deep-sea rig hand, so I would guess that's about right time wise... on land it can take weeks to set up to kill a well... I'm not sure I can make an educated guess what all goes into to killing an off shore rig... boats workover platform needs to be set up first, that could take a month in itself and that's before you can start to counter drill...

I never said this wasn't major bad... just not end of the world bad ya know...

why not just drop a very large chunck of iron on it? Use a big plug! Its a quick fix, but I personally see it as a workable idea. People can blah blah blah over it will or won't work, but it is a fast maybe temperary solution until something else can be done.... just my own ponderings on this. I live in a very volitile fishing town in southeast alaska, and I'll tell you what, I feel really bad for the fishermen down in the gulf, they are screwed unless something is done fast.

well brilliant is going to take time... how deep is the sea floor there? cant use human divers it's gonna be done with ROV's .. got to build this cap and if its made out of cement like I read then you'd have to make a mold, pour your cement wait for it to cure, load it on a boat then sail it out to the site...

Logistics for something like this has to be a bitch and just isn't gonna be an overnight deal...

Edit to add the hole (Sea floor) might be covered in wreckage from the drill platform so that would have to be cleared out of the way before doing anything else... bloody mess if you ask me

Yes, I noticed that. We truly live in a world of distraction and not covering this gravely important event amounts to denial. What a year so far!

It's been a while but I believe there is even some biblical prophecy that talks about all sea life dying etc. I am not trying to make this a religious post or anything as I am not religious, just saying. This looks really bad, really bad!

Lets see the entire sea is comprised of approximately... 365,753,863,100,000,000,000 gallons

1 gallon = 4 quarts

1 barrel of oil = 42 gallons

5000 barrels a day times 42 gallons = 210,000 gallons

210,000 gallons times 4 = 840,000 quarts of oil

840,000 quarts of oil times 250,000 gallons toxic ocean = 210,000,000,000 gallons of toxic ocean per day...

356,753,863,100,000,000,000 gallons of ocean divided by 210,000,000,000 gallons of toxic ocean per day=

1,698,827,920 days until doomsday

1,698,827,920 days divided by 365 =

4,654,323.067 years until doomsday

Of course that pocket of oil would run out before then

Messy beaches though.... poor beach goers

no its not... I take public transport, and that consumes oil. I drive a car, sometimes, and that consumes oil. If I didn't, then I would die... I wouldn't be able to go to work, school, whatever, earn this fake money, and buy food, clothing, and shelter.

I think the people that have hid free energy from us for money are to blame.

No i dont think you would die .You would adapt and survive, thats what living things do .Sure it would be tough but thats life. No one has hidden free energy .Energy is everywhere we just havent worked out how to use it in the right way .Energy is not owned by anyone, its just there.

STOP PUTTING WORDS INTO MY MOUTH, MEMBERS OF ATS..

Just because I inject some logic into these irrational topics, does not mean I don't feel for the tremendous catastrophe taking place.

Assumptions are for the ignorant.

Deny Ignorance, ATS members.

Thank you !!
You didn't use logic and you did nothing more than make yourself look stupid. There doesn't have to be enough oil to pollute every last drop of the ocean. The vast majority of sea life lives in the shallower waters of the ocean. Down deep it is dark and can be devoid of oxygen.

Now here is using logic, ready? Oil floats...... If you pollute just the shallower waters your pretty well boned and since lucky for us, oil floats, most of the oil coming out will pollute the shallower waters. Cut your estimate by alot, and then realize it gets real easy real fast to pollute 50% of surface water with the currents at work. Gets messy.

Not to make light of the situation but my nephew asked why they couldn't just fix the leak with putty. The solution lies in the mind of a 7 year old.

detonate an under water nuke to melt the crust and re-seal it. It's not like you could make the situation worse, considering that we all be dead soon because of this.

thanks BP!

Get a hole obama out or someone wake him UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Write now he is worthless and get him out of the problem because he is lied too by his band of retards, get the china people involved before it,s to late ,they have the resources to make a real change before 1/3 of the oceans are destroyed. America is run by judges and polititions bought off by the highest bidder. America is run by a goverment and they do'nt have the brains to wipe after they defecate..................AsK China and the world what to do our goverment is less than useless. They killed the man who said the mother load was at 30,000 feet and the hole they drilled it in 5 thousand feet of water in the middle of 40 % of all our wild life. With a half inch pipe wall thickness. Coupleing stock the best they make could not withstand thoose pressures . Mother earth is going to F you all if you don't listen and close this spill. If one third of the oceans die that means 1/3 third of all of you will die. Get somebody out there with a bomb to blow that junk 1/2 pipe into bedrock 1000 feet and cover it then with tons of sediment. Atleast we'll have some time to use their useles containment tools to clean up what's left.

Thank you for this article. This is really bad. I knew the first hint of this happening that something different was going on. I have an ability to 'see' things at times, it is kind of like reading a book, hard to explain, but anyway when I heard this on the news the first time my book opened and the chapter began: The oil spill. My heart sank. I cried. I know this is not going to end, I knew something unprecedented and of unbelievable magnitude and force had now taken place, and will continue and possibly be complicated by other measures, but will wreak havoc on mankind. If you want to know what comes next, I will tell you what I 'see'. It is the rest of the world, mad. Mad at the US for having this happen, angry as people suffer because of it. This is not going to just stop flowing and be fixed. It is going to ruin the oceans of the world, even ruining just a portion of those, a third even, will be devasting to all.

It only takes one quart of motor oil to make 250,000 gallons of ocean water toxic to wildlife.

It's not going to happen. BP is untouchable. Look at who runs it. It's a who's who of elitists and Bilderberger types. Here is one example of a director,
Peter Sutherland.

space cadet, thanks for giving us hope

Haha...I'm obviously joking...that sucked...and the worste thing is...what you say is plausible...I'm already starting to get angry at whoever caused this...so it was you pesky Americans?!?
Haha...I'm obviously joking again...it probably couldn't have been helped...

This is a horrible catastrophy and I wish the mechanics, engineers, clean-up crews the best of luck!

On the other hand portraying this as the worst spill ever, end of the oceans, etc is just not realistic.

The worst oil spill ever, in the Persian Gulf in 1991, spilled about 430,000,000 gallons of oil.

At the rate of 100,000 barrels a day (100,000 according to CNN and BP an hour ago) this spill needs to stay full force like this for 11 years to equal the spill in the Persian Gulf.

Horrible? of course - worst ever? Not even close.

Oh...thank you...that's what I get for skimming over a thread and mindlessly believing what the majority of ATS members say...nice input.
