I think it's perfectly rationale to suppose that aliens might need some element on earth for some unknown reason. We can't pretend to know what the reason is. That they might treat us like a colony of ants is also a reasonable supposition. But then, it's also a reasonable supposition that they might not even need a resource on earth. Either way, they may or may not care about us, but they probably wouldn't care about us anymore than we would care about dolphins or bears. That's assuming that being able to travel here across interstellar space also means that they're the equivalent of a human versus a bear or dolphin. But, who knows?
