Too tired to stay awake

Employed for gruelling 15-hour shifts, in appalling conditions and 86f heat, many fall asleep on their stations during their meagre ten-minute breaks.

For as little as 34p an hour, the men and women work six or seven days a week, making computer mice and web cams for the American multinational computer company.

The mostly female workers, aged 18 to 25, work from 7.45am to 10.55pm, sometimes with 1,000 workers crammed into one 105ft by 105ft room.

Dear order in chaos

Who ever wrote this doesn’t know Asia at all or they have some big beef with Microsoft.

Do not get worked up about it in anyway, simply this is natural for an Asian worker to fell asleep on any break.

Not normal nothing to see here move along.

Don't worry, it's communist china, I bet everyone there gets free health care and food and transportation so it's all good.

/end sarcasm.

Seriously, the problem is not with microsoft alone, its everything labeled 'made in china'. Their crap empire doesn't care about the people, they only care about the money. Otherwise they couldn't finance this great system called communism. I hope the US never goes that way, ever.

OK, so it's okay for China to allow these conditions in the eyes of US corporations.

Who cares about the health and well being of their workers, as long as they can get a mouse made for 5 cents.

"Made in China" is a huge problem, if US companies made their own products we wouldn't be in trouble economically.

You can see the outcome of socialist policies. (a) everyone is poor (b) no one gives a # about the company they work for so they go to sleep on the job but I suspect this particular shot was staged so they can continue to complain about lack of government regulation.

In REALITY we seriously are talking about "LACK OF SECURITY"

No wonder why Microsoft windows is the WORST operating system known to man

This is the obvious reason why the GOVERNMENT does not use
"Microsoft's stupidity" Only people who have NO IDEA about computers use
microsoft windows

That's the reason why it's on every damn computer you find in america and around the world.

People have NO clue about computers at all and NEVER will have a damned clue because MOST people are inherently stupid.

So while you are surfing the internet with that "Magic firewall and anti virus and Host intrusion prevention systems"

Little do you know your stupid operating systems have TERRIBLE security flaws and ALWAYS will have unless the people start waking up from their complete stupidness

Security companies make BILLIONS because we are stupid. Welcome to the real world people - Welcome to the damned real world.

It's quite funny right?

I think that this is a clinical and somewhat overt application of Taylorism labor management principles. This was used by not just United States but also by the erstwhile Soviet Union to maximize the labor productivity and factory outputs.

It's not about who gets to make what, it's about the role of the government and what it enforces. China could easily enforce better human treatment, however that would come at a cost - raising the price on every product they make.

If that happened there would be no point in buying everything from China anymore. Both US companies and weaker economies in the world would stand a better chance.

Taking China out of the picture is a no go, that would only make everything we buy more expensive and life standards in China would decline since it would destroy their economy. A loss-loss situation.

These are some MAJORLY big claims against Microsoft. Did anyone actually bother to read this article?

The mostly female workers, aged 18 to 25, work from 7.45am to 10.55pm, sometimes with 1,000 workers crammed into one 105ft by 105ft room.

They are not allowed to talk or listen to music, are forced to eat substandard meals from the factory cafeterias, have no bathroom breaks during their shifts and must clean the toilets as discipline, according to the NLC.

The workers also sleep on site, in factory dormitories, with 14 workers to a room. They must buy their own mattresses and bedding, or else sleep on 28in-wide plywood boards. They 'shower' with a sponge and a bucket.

And many of the workers, because they are young women, are regularly sexually harassed, the NLC claimed.

The organisation said that one worker was even fined for losing his finger while operating a hole punch press.
WTF?!?!? Fined for losing a finger? After he works 15 hours a day and probably sleeps on wood?

One employee told the NLC: 'We are like prisoners. It seems like we live only to work - we do not work to live. We do not live a life, only work.'
That's so saddening...and what's even more saddening is that they don't even have the independence or ability to realize they they aren't a slave on a chain, and they can get away from it, anything would be better than that...just travel...I think even 8-10 hours work a day for the rate people get is so unfair...compared to what CEO and shareholders can earn, a normal employee is like a slave however you look at it. I have no full time job, but do casual online work involving website development, but I probably only work about 4-5 hours a day, 3 days a week. Call me a leech on society if you will, but I laugh at you slave...because I enjoy my job, and I do it whenever I feel like it...it isn't even work for me...whilst you work your entire life away, still probably worrying about money...it's the the same routine day in day out, except you get those two precious days you call the weekend...but then you get old, and retire..and suddenly you have the time and money to to do all the things you've always wanted, but they wont be half as good, because, ooops, you've got a bad knee and hip, not that you've got much energy to travel around heaps at your age...instead you'll probably just waste away the rest of your mundane life with as little adventure and excitement as the first 3/4 of it. Hooray, look at me, I'm an upstanding citizen.

Thats funny. Am I wrong or isnt China the country with the highest number of millionaires?

Making other people toil while you own the factory and dont even need to run it... yeah thats reeeal socialist.

I know I shouldn't but I laughed at that. They do have a national health care system.

Just one more reason not to trust a national government with your personal health.

Ah, knew there was an old article about this (back then microsoft didn't take the hit alone, instead, Dell and HP got bashed to death as well, but it's pretty much the same factory):
