I emailed SETI about this,

linked them to the news article and the research page.

I'll let you all know when I hear back from them!

So if the Universe is billions of years old how did God he create everything in 6 days? Since we are just babies when it comes to science don't knock creation just yet.

No I don't want a big God vs Science debate, a stand alone comment, carry on...

[edit on 14-4-2010 by The time lord]

Time Lord maybe God dreamed everything all at once in the 1st Universe then made time in order to decipher the dream that he dreamed by inposeing himself in time and trying to imagine what he did in order to create his own place in the higher dimensions. If I was God I would want to forget in order to chill in a place that gets so much praise, maybe we humans will find God in a human body one day but if we do it may piss him off but prolly not because we would have seen it in the first dreaming of the Universe.

I think the Universe already happened because there are higher dimensions and time is not all incompusing of all the dimensions.

Who knows maybe God dreamed up the Universe while chilling in our Universe during our time in order to get a surprise via no memory of even being God.

I say this only because once 5D comes into play then anything ever imagined is possible and... idk makes no places that could not be.

Just typeing for the heck of it.

Dude lets not start one of those debates because if it gets started then things will get nasty.

Thats another thing.. they've been observing it since May 09, so if there were any clues that pointed towards it being an artificial signal then you would have thought they'd have been able to identify some of these by now.
And I assume if they had any hint that it was an artificial signal then they would at least insinuate that it may have been created artificially, instead of just talking about microquasars and black holes.

Dear Mr. Manhattan Avatar,

I am just saying that maybe Universes are made from thought and imagination.
and if I was a creator of a Universe I may want to visit a cool one with secrets when you think you know what is going on, then get bamboozeled with a sort of "dude you have no clue" in order to make stuff a bit more interesting for the guy.

Sort of like a surprise for God or Gods which ever cause where would God come from, did God have parents? Everything has to come from somewhere because nothing is something too.

This is my last reply to yourself... welcome to my ignore list. You're the first one on there and on the most part people on here are nice, so I imagine it'll be lonely in there.

The moon's actual velocity, relative to us, is something like 2500mph if memory serves - we've had plenty of time to figure that one out. I understand the point you're trying to make (poorly, which is probably why you've edited that question at least once), but my point stands - we've observed the moon and know what the plot is - we can't say the same for this shiny new amazing thing in the sky.

They then go on to say that's it's not likely to be a black hole, so the relativistic effects seen before likely don't apply to this new observation.

Yes, it does say its not likely to be a blackhole, but that's not the part I placed under the bold tags.

Mate, where you put the bold tags is irrelevant, and really we're arguing semantics now. Do you see where I said 'likely', twice? I'm not claiming to know, I'm doggedly sticking to 'the scientific method' - this new thing can't be explained based on what we've previously observed, so it's wrong to jump to conclusions without any evidence to support them.

It possible that you're right and it is a 'trick of the light' if you like, but it's also possible that relativity is flawed and something crazy is happening, or something somwhere inbetween. You've made an assumption that you're correct, then called "91%" of the board fools for not agreeing with you, which isn't very nice and not really in the spirit of this place.

any chance at all they are answering our radio signals? or maybe they detected our technological civilization somehow and are saying hi...

I don't know if I'm right but I don't think there's any way we can decipher an ET message if its in an alien language and alien code...

but I hope we can at least ascertain an artificial, intelligent, technological pattern

who knows, maybe they're also tagging earth and saying "we're on our way
"

QUESTION: the discussion has been that MATTER is traveling 4 x the speed of light. Also that the theory is that matter cannot travel faster than the speed of light.

So, I am wondering at what point does matter exist? Are atoms considered matter?

there is also discussion that RADIO waves are what is traveling faster than light...aren't radio waves energy that need molecules to carry them?

You can see I am no rocket scientist...so i hope someone can enlighten me.

thanks!

This just proves my point that you don't know how to read. Notice how I said the word 'apparent' and the phrase 'when you spin around' - 'you' as in your own body - all in the same sentence. In general relativity all coordinate systems are valid, that includes rotating ones.

No, I dind't make an assumption, I simple stated what the article said.
The spirit of this place? Make every post count? Deny ignorance? Heh, you're the one putting me on ignore list. Also, make that 92%.
Bye.

Maybe we just witnessed the equivalent of a LHC in another galaxy at full power while a bird like animal drops a croûton into it!

At this very moment a million trillion billion croûtons could be screaming towards Earth at 4x the speed of light. Head for the hills or get your Ranch dressing out. It's your call fellow ATSers. I warned you

.. and M82 is apparantly a 'starburst galaxy'... so even if life got started, it would probably end up being wiped out before anything evolved enough to start whacking out the warp drives & whatever else.

Maybe the ET's in that ship weren't evolved or "born" in M82, maybe they are just passing through. Heck, maybe they found something they didn't like (or that didn't like them) so they put their ship into hyperspace mode to high tail it out of there!

Perhaps we woke something up we shouldnt have...or we just alerted the Horde and they're on their way to our lovely blue planet to do some 'culling'. um, where's my shotgun? hmmmm....put it here somewhere....

All joking aside. Maybe they were the last of their Kind. A nearby Star blew itself to bits and they were like Holy Crap. HELP!

I don't get it, to the alien race, we are reputed to be as a collectively primitive race. Sending these alien, undecipherable radio waves in 1 single source, wouldn't do us any good anyhow. Why not send something more concise, in our language, so that we would know the message?

Also, I was wondering what "apparent sideways velocity" means?

the universe is full of a$$holes sending radio signals to each other. i bet on another planet a four headed, bug eyed group of aliens are wondering to decide if they should invade a blue pearl like planet full of idiots and arrogant "leaders" who keep sending exact co-ordinates of their location.

Oh ya there is always that the last thing the human race neads is a vastly superior alien race that is on the same wavelength as humans coming here physically it most likely wont be good. It would be no trouble if you can traverse 12 mil light years, to take over this planet.
Lets hope that if it does happen that the aliens have advanced beyond the nead to feed and all other human faults, if they retain there carnivorous nature. Whats to stop them from thinking that humans are delicious and its best to keep them around as a delicacy. If your advanced enough to come here from that far away to take over earth it wouldn't even be a challenge, It would be like the entire us army invading a termite mound. Be careful what you wish for. Or at least be more specific in your wishes.

Many thanks to all for the 8-page read. Out of curiosity, how is a radio signal "decoded" and what types of information might be extrapolated?

Great find, Now...

The signal started when the nearby explosion took place now it is constant and traveling away from said explosion at great speed and is broadcasting it's position.

My thoughts exactly Slayer...which in plain english COULD mean...."distress signal"?
hmm...
I can see the news headlines now: "Supernova casues global Chaos in neightbouring Solar Systemthreatening all life. Distress Signal Received by Earth!

just goes to show you...along with the radio broadcasts found neas Saturn a few years back. this could be forms of contact, we (general public) dont even know what the hell is going on!

You claim that 90% of the people that read this article in ATS are at fault for not understanding it.
IS IT THEIR BUSINESS TO CORRECTLY 100% UNDERSTAND ASTROPHYSICAL TERMS?
NO!
WHOSE JOB IS IT THEN?
Your scientists friends.
So, what is it with your scientist friends that they CAN'T get a damn article right, since they are posting in on the damn Internet, and they expect ordinary people, space enthusiasts to pick it up!
NOW THIS KIND OF PEOPLE IS OPERATING HUGELY EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT AND THE WORLD RELIES ON THEM FOR MAJOR SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGHS, AND OF COURSE BE ALSO ABLE TO DISCOVER TRACES OF INTELLIGENT LIFE IN THE COSMOS

YET THEY CAN'T UNDERSTAND ON HOW THEY SUPPOSE TO RELAY CORRECTLY THEIR INFORMATION TO THE AVERAGE READER
.

And you come here, [oh look at me I'm so smart] and bash everybody about it.

Who's fault is it really?
OUR FAULT. These guys and you should be working at some McDonald's or something and let these positions open for people that really have some level of perception, and let me tell you this.. ordinary people who were forced to work average jobs because they had to deal with whatever life had thrown at them have far better perception if the same people chose to log on to the Internet and check around for articles talking about cosmic wonders in midst of their life problems and then happen to stumble upon some guys that had it easy, got their science degrees and now they can't seem they have a good perception of their audience.
HOW DIFFICULT IS TO ACQUIRE THIS KIND OF DISCOVERY?
You have to just turn on the right equipment, specifically optimized at the right location.

HOW DIFFICULT IS TO PERCEIVE YOUR AUDIENCE RIGHT AND MAKE AN UNDERSTANDABLE ARTICLE OR AT LEAST RELAY YOUR INFORMATION RIGHT?

For there guys probably it was a lot harder than turning on the equipment..

Science has to climb down from its pedestal and become more available for the masses else we ain't going nowhere. It's just an expensive toy for glorified idiots, while we sit and wait and the whole world is collapsing around us and we still haven't find any real solutions, despite all that money and efforts and time.
IT'S BEEN 2400 YEARS SINCE SCIENCE EMERGED AND WE ARE STILL STUCK HERE. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT OR JUST QUIT CALLING OTHER PEOPLE STUPID ALL THE FREAKING TIME.

My 2 cents
