but the majority of the time in geography we used flat maps, even on the tests.

I believe what you're dealing with is in general, aphophenia and specifically a type of [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareidolia]pareidolia[/ul].
That is, seeing patterns in random meaningless data (aphophenia) and specifically human, or at least anthropoidal, shapes. Like the Man in the Moon, or those threads that are always cropping up with pictures of the surface of the Moon or Mars and people see gorillas and helmets and tool belts and mine equipment.
