Within the hour (0730 local time).
No bang.
No boom.
No fuss.
No ground shakes.
Nothing but ash and stink.

Absolutely uneventful other than the smell, and, whoever’s going to get the fallout’s going to have some cleaning up to do.

peace

Good morning everyone.

The report of last night is out at INGV

On the early morning of 29 August 2011, the 12th paroxysmal eruptive episode of this year occurred at the New Southeast Crater, almost 8 days after its predecessor. This event generated tall lava fountains and an eruption column that caused ash falls in the southeast sector of the volcano, as well as various lava flows down the western slope of the Valle del Bove. During this paroxysm, the southeastern flank of the pyroclastic cone of the New Southeast Crater fractured, with the opening of several eruptive vents down to the base of the cone, which produced lava fountains and a broad lava flow that advanced to the Valle del Bove, too. The acme of this episode lasted less than 40 minutes

Darn it...slept through it...again!
TZ...thank you for all your hard work and screen captures.
Silo, I am soooo glad the wind is in the oposite direction, but be careful as you say there is a stench in the air.

Yes, it was short, and quiet - but violent. I could see all the 'flow' (by it's smoke only) - and hope this evening to see if there is more to see in lava? Hard to say...

THANK YOU!

Anyone have any news? My eyes are blurry and not really awake.
It's 0230 and I'm hearing a lot of noise - Etna like noise of course - but I can't see a thing the clouds are so black and I'm not having luck with webcams?

Perfect! The link you gave me is the best one of the two I've got for sure. I recommend it to anyone interested in Etna. She's quiet this morning, but, as I said, earlier she was making a lot of noise!

Thank you again and have a great day!

Yes, this is the one I always give the link to with news etc, Be careful though if there is a lot of activity on Etna, this site will crash if you start flicking from cam to cam, it then gets shut down. I usually have a quick look at the thermal then close it down again.
Update on Etna, something happened around 5am this morning (Silo time) Looked like there could have been a small explosion and everything rose for a short time then luckily went straight down again. Nothing on Gee or my other quakewatch, last was Monday morning with a 2.8. I will keep a eye on it as She hasn't quite cooled down like She has on other occations. Law unto herself, you just think you know Her and She does something completely different.
Take care all

Etna the Enigma!

Just out of interest and fun, I did an antipode map search for Etna here
www.antipodemap.com...
I don't know if it will show up or if you will have to 'play' with it, anyhow, Etnas antipode is just east of New Zealand........we know there is a whole lot of shaking going on in the whole of that area generally...just saying

Perhaps too much ash made her sneeze. No sign of any quakes at that time in the morning.

Amazing pics!
Could you see all that lava getting thrown in the air from your house?
What was the noise like?
That must have been freaking awesome Silo!
I saw some footage on the TV news today, and thought of you and Lucie, right ther watching it happen.

You are one ATS member for whom a tinfoil hat may actually be of some use!
As long as its super reinforced carbon tin, with a cork lining of course.
Be safe Silo.

Yeah, it was Luci and Me waving at all a ya!

Yes, I can see all that 'lava and stuff' from my backyard - and - at the moment? Well, Etna is putting out a lot of steam and smoke and white billows, but, none of the 'pulvera' that makes life so miserable - or - the ground shakes and BOOMS that makes life so...interesting.

Yes, she's busy today, but truly just 'letting off steam'...
