For what it's worth, thanks for sharing.

I have no reason to believe you are lying, or to even care one way or the other.

You posted some pics, told us what happened to you and people can either chose to believe it or not. I really don't understand the point to trying to discredit you or call you a liar. What's it matter?

Please post more pics if you get them....whatever they are.

i seen a meteor from Dundee the same night and approx the same time as shauny (60 miles north of Edinburgh) so i know he's onto something good with his first posts, but i have to agree with the findings about the current thread, i was in Fife ( just over the forth from Edinburgh) and there was quite large cloud cover over the area, so i cant say these pictures were taken at the time stated yesterday as the meta data in the picture posted shows

I know he hasn't got the need to lie and that these things do happen, i know as shauny states that i am lucky to have witnessed this at all, i am not looking / wanting to discredit him in any way as the weather in Scotland can change every couple of minutes. just these images do look like contrails to me, thats all.

I can understand how it would be thought of as a contrail, since it definitely looks like one...of course, it may actually BE a contrail, just not from an aircraft.

Meteor and meteorites are often rocky objects, with a percentage of ice present which usually burns off with atmospheric contact friction..maybe the contrail, is the remnants of this ice, as literally condensation/vapour.

I agree 100%.

What I saw last night (here in Glasgow, Scotland at 9pm) was so different from anything I have ever seen.
It was large and had a kind of luminous effect.

Shauny is telling the truth. He is not reporting mundane, everyday stuff!

Just wanted to stick my head in and support the OP.

While I think the pictures Shauny has posted 'look like' airplane contrails, that doesn't necessarily mean that they are. It does sound like he saw something interesting over the beautiful city of Edinburgh.

But whether contrails or not, I don't think he's lying - I think if someone was going to try some sort of hoax they would make it more dramatic. All I see here (and on Shauny's other thread) is a guy who saw something interesting/unexplainable, and tried to tell us about it.

Oh, and about camera dates/times - I'm not sure if my camera has the right date on it either - I bet lots of people don't. As long as it takes a nice picture, that's all I care about

I was ready to give it some credit, but this "psilo simon" is, in terms of writing and grammar ( and scheduled times of posting , always supportive of thE OP when challenged ) an exact replica of our Shauny mate.

I sincerely apologize in advance if you were to be proven right, mate, but ONE guy seeing something in a large city and next to an airport (which means densely populated areas usually ) is definitely not sounding right.

Stay glued to the window, if you want, take a picture of a kite and claim it's a triangle shaped ufo, who knows psilo simon could agree...

Hey, Beardy, away and take yer face for a #e.

I am Psilo Simon, Shauny is Shauny ok?

He stays in Edinburgh, I stay in Lasswade.

I am a music producer, I don`t know what Shauny does.

I am a single dad, I believe Shauny is married with a kid and one on the way.

I saw a meteor the other night, it seems Shauny saw one too in roughly the same vicinity.

I will speak in anyone`s defence if I believe they are speaking the truth.

Ask a mod to check out the IPs before you go spouting crap about us being the same person.

The reasons you give for thinking we are the same person show you are unable to think rationally.

Grow up.

Contrails.

Look, I don't know your background or your age, but these aren't shooting stars. This is probably one of the worst misidentifications I've ever seen.

Terapin - Very good, you seem to know your stuff and have posted some good info in this thread but the photo you linked to above is not a train left by a meteor. Read up on the investigation into the photo/event here.

Trains left by meteors are quite distinctive, but occasionally the unweary can be fooled.

Because trains left by meteors are significantly higher in altitude than con-trails, they almost imediately start to become distorted by high altitude winds. Aircraft contrails do not do this in the same way, and usually take much longet to become distorted, and they never become as distorted, since they are not plunging down through the various layers of atmosphere, which is much like an onion, with each layer having a diffferent direction/wind-speed.

Here is a page showing a sequence of frames from a video of a persistent train left by a meteor.

Here are some more examples that I have saved:

This fireball occured over Afgahnistahn in 2008. Note how initially the train is almost straight, but in the following photographs, it becomes much more distorted.

Another train from a fireball over Greenaland in 2008:

To see a daylight fireball is quite rare, and to see one that leaves a dust/smoke/persistent train is even more rare. Sorry Shauny, but what you saw was not a meteor.

One thing which people are forgetting here is that there are basically two classes of meteor:

Cometary meteoroids are the most common, and these are where our annual meteor showers come from. Cometary material is light and fluffy for the most part, and because of this, it always "burns up" very quickly.

Asteroidal meteorids on the other hand tend to be much harder, and they are also more or less random, although during spring we get the peak in large fireballs that occurs every year at this time. These are generally the meteoroids that cause big, bright, and long lasting fireballs, and they have nothing to do with annual meteor showers like the Perseids and Leonids.

I said in the other thread that I would not post any more, well I will answer questions, if anyone has any more, for the moment, but after this I am gone.

Just regarding the date on the photos: many people lose the date/time on cameras when they run out of battery, or reset, etc. Inputting the date is sometimes so much of a chore that they just don't bother: hence wrong date /time on photos.

First and foremost I apologize for the rudeness and hostility you have encountered. (whether or not the guilty parties want to be apologized for )Pay it no mind because there will always be nay sayers and trolls.

Thanks for your two posts they were for interesting reading and I envy you and your sightings... well maybe I do ... After reading your first post I had a nightmare concerning a large meteor destroying the world.
So I imagine I would have keeled over upon seeing what you have. Try to get some pictures of the helicopters in the area and stay safe for your wife and baby's sake. There could be a reason why they are around and 'nobody' has reported these sightings.

I'm not taking sides here.

What I will say is every time I put new batteries in my digital camera it asks me if I want to change the date.

No, I don't want to change the date, it's a pain in the boody and the camera already eats up batteries at such a rate that it would cost me a picture or two every time I went through that bs. So my sate is NEVER correct on my photos.

Can't always go by the sate folks.
Just sayin.

PS - Hang in there. If you're true to yourself - who cares what others think.

On the other hand if you're not - I hope it haunts you for the rest of your days on the boards...

Sorry for my heated replies last night Shauny, I had drank a few

I do believe you saw the meteor you reported in the first thread, it just seemed like you posted some contrails to backup your first sighting. I felt cheated because I had defended you before but hey, what does it matter to me?

Don't hesitate to report anything else you witness cos of heated comments of members here.

Thanks to pointing out the issues with the Image I had posted.

I simply had googled "Daylight meteor image" and came up with that photo without investigating it's background. Your link goes into some doubts that people had about it's origin, but nothing conclusive seemed to have been decided. Possible fuel dump perhaps? NASA thought it was a genuine fireball.

I was aware of the significant drifting that occurs with Meteor trains which is why I was puzzled over the OPs image. As I mentioned earlier it does not seem to behave in the manner we see with meteors.

Well this is a bit crappy to be honest.
Im not trying to prove a point.
2 objects, higher in the sky, flew past, about 10/15 seconds apart.

I didnt get the objects, but I got the trail.
ANYONE from the Edinburgh area will know that these trails go right over the top of Edinburgh Airport, going across the runways. So this rules out take off or landing.

I will not post any of this again.
I have spent the last week or so, glued to the window, with a camera, to try and see if i could get something.

I am NOT that desperate.

I do concede they look like normal trails from planes
why ? because that is exactly what they look like.

2 objects shot past at top speeds, they cleared the whole sky in seconds.

Maybe I shouldnt have put metror/shooting star.
But I didnt know what else to name them.

Anyone else in the Edinburgh area today, SURELY would have noticed the amount of army helicopters going by was amazing.
Like this :

If my reputation is damaged, then so be it.

I never had one to start with

I did say take or leave it.
And i Fully get why people call Hoax, Im not that stupid.

I know what I saw.

Sorry but it does look like you are trying to prove a point lets be 100% honest here what are the chances of the same event like this happening in the same area withinh a week.

Someone made a comment re hundreds of metors coming into the atmosphere every day thats wrong its more like 100.000's to millions but most are specs of dust VERY VERY few leave a trail and are seen in daylight especially in the same area within a week.

Just because the trails go over high above the airport doesn't they are not planes many planes fly over the UK to get to other destinations.

What does the statement re helicopters mean are you again trying to reinforce your bogus claim by making it seem the military are showing an interest in your CONTRAILS.

RAF Turnhouse seeing as you are from Edinburgh does that ring a bell if not check here.

en.wikipedia.org...

You often see the RAF land at Edinburgh airport I have family in the central belt of Scotland a few years back I went to the Ingilston Sunday Market next to the aiport the RAF had Harrier jump jet training going on most of that day.

WHAT "ARE" THE ODDS ON ME SEEING THIS TYPE OF THING 2 TIMES IN SUCH A SHORT TIME ???????

Really. Any bookies (Betting experts) on here ?

Proving a point, and trying to be an idoit by any means is not what I am about.

Again, I seen it, I posted it.

If people want to kill me and eat me, go ahead.

for the record. I saw several shooting stars last night.
So we must be entering some phase. A yearly thing I hear
