Lucky you to have all that on your doorstep! Beautiful pictures and so good that you shared them with us. An important reminder that we are not the only ones affected by all the weird stuff going on these days and to remember all the great beauty that abounds in our extraordinary world...

Thanks for the post and kind words! Welcome...

A question for all my West Coast friends: How are your pets acting today???

My dogs WILL NOT go outside. Very strange. My outdoor cat also wants in. Granted, it is raining but it is always raining and never stops them. They behaved like this before the Japan quake. I think I even made note of it...I will have to check when I have time.

Anyways, anyone else????

Nothing much to talk about as late, which is a good thing! I had commented over on the putting it all together thread my concerns about the lack of deep tremors up our way lately and this possibly indicating a moderate quake on the way.

Well, I don't know if this is connected, but there were a couple of moderate sized quakes off-shore Oregon in the same area we have been seeing them occasionally the past years. The next day, we started having the deep tremors out on Vancouver Island again. I am not one who easily believes in coincidences, so I DO think it all conncted!

To keep with the recent picture theme...
I recently came across this one my daughter took. It was the same trip that I took the previously posted pics of Rainier, except that this one is of me. You can see Rainier looming behind me, surrounded by an amazing forrested world. I just think this captures what it is I see and feel when I am there!

Okay, I don't bring activity on Rainier to question very often, because of the magnetude of ANY event there would have. Since watching a show a couple of days ago regarding the risks and likelyhood of a major event happening there any time, I have been watching a little more closely than usual.

Something began near there around 1300hrs UTC. THIS seismo (so far) in my search is showing it the best. No, it does not appear to be a very well working station...BUT this action is showing up on numerous stations and this one seems to be the strongest.

HERE is the link to the main map I pulled it from. That station is RVC. The first link to the actual seismo won't last long so you will need to go to the main map and either click on the list, or on the sation on the map. It is located just NW of Rainier.
(select the 12hr)

It is also showing on:

RVCX (right next to RVC)
FMW (NE of Rainier)
RCM (on the south face of the volcano)
STAR (on the top of the volcano...not showing same sig, but more of a 'wave'...odd)
RERX (south base of the mountain...same thing. Odd wave and broken line)
RER (same location as rerx, same thing showing)
LO2 (south of the mountain...showing clearer seismic activity starting at the same time)
LON (next to LO2....info starts at about the same time)
B941 (quite a few miles to the west....showing increased seismic activity at the same time)
GHW (also a ways to the west...even more action at the same time)

Okay....THIS is a really good one. It's way over in Puyallup. Showing activity at the same time. (PAYL) This is not far from the town of Orting...the one that will be buried in the Lahar from Rainier.

WOW....check out LMW this is to the SW
and LMWX

So basically it seems that if you get on that map and click on any station whithin about a 40 mile radius of the mountain and you are going to find it.

I just checked the weather down south there and it is much like my own: Overcast, with some sun breaks. occasional light showers. Not windy or stormy.

Also, the recent quakes near there earlier this week concern me. (I experienced one of them):

The above quakes have all been in and around Rainier and Helens in the past week, source

I want to stress that I am NOT trying to raise the alarm. If I thought this was a sign of something really occuring I would start a seperate thread. However, I think that it is unusuall and possibly seismic in nature and warrants close observation. I also want to stress that it started earlier this morning and still on-going. Perhaps I am mistaken and it is weather....but the fact that it is showing up differently on SO many stations so widespread...as noise on some and small seismic events on others...it has me a bit concerned.

Some thoughts??

I went ahead and pulled up GEE to see what this looked like on a live seismo. Some of them are crap, but a few others are very active with some seismic events (or ice, etc.)

One stands out in particular. I noted it in my earlier post, but since then it has gotten even more impressive. It is station GHW...it is on the above linked map and GEE, so it is a great one to compare. Take a look:

HERE

Unfortunately, that link won't last for too long....I will try and update it. But....take a look. I think it is quite clear on that one that it is NOT weather. It is just south of Orting, around 30 miles west of Rainier.

ETA: One of those quakes I listed was almost right under this station:

Note the depth? (0!!!) Turns out, this is the one that I felt too...I was near Tacoma at the time.

Woah....okay, maybe helens is getting into this too now. I went ahead and checked out the PNSN Cascade Range status. It hasn't been updated since the 27th (they go home for the weekend ya know, and it is a holiday in the states today). So no surprise it wasn't current (why I hadn't checked yet.) What it DID have was a current screen-shot of Helens. Yikes!

HERE is the station highlighted on that page.

HERE is another one from the top of the mountain.

Here is another, better look at it. Also important to note, this is not a typical 'noisy' station.

SEP SHZ

ETA...after looking further, it isn't showing up on other stations and this station, while I am not finding anyting this severe, has been acting up a bit lately. Unless it continues or shows up elsewhere, I am guessing it is either local to that station or a malfunction.

BUT...that has nothing to do with Rainier...I am still very interested in what it is going on over there.

Is this giant magma pool also feeding Mt Baker ?
The article doesnt mention it.

You know, You are right, it doesn't say it.

The conventional belief is that the friction of the plates in the subduction zone heats up the rock, creating magma which is feeding the range.

I would have to say that if you subscribe to the 'magma pool' belief, such as myself, than it would kinda make sense that the whole range is fed by it. I think it may be a combination of the two mechanics.

Looks to be solar interference. Most interesting.

Very odd, I had a dream about an Earthquake in Seattle last night as well.

I was sitting in Starbucks at the Pier looking over Puget Sound.
I remember standing up and thinking "theres about to be an earthquake" then I ran outside right as the eq began. As the shaking continued I began to make my way towards the highest area around; the park by Pike-Place (can't recall the name). I reached it just as a large tidal surge began to overwhelm the Port of Seattle and other low-lying areas (realistically I wouldve had more than just moments to reach high ground).

Anyways, nice eye Westcoast on the recent activity. Keep us updated on the developments.

ahhhh....why in the world would they put a seismograph station right next to train tracks? For cryin out loud!
Good find.

That explains why it is showing on that station....being so far away. I think the spikes you correlated really seem to be related to the solar activity.

Some of the other stations still have me wondering though.....

Here are some updated links, since the others are already broken:

Here is helens...showing some activity (recent quake there this evening)....but nothing too exciting.

Okay, sorry it took me so long but I finally have it up:

Putting it all together

Issac...I don't want you to loose any more sleep. The thing with all of this, is that there isn't anything we can do about it except be prepared. We could move. But where? You can find something to worry over no matter where you go. I chose to live here because it is so beautiful and just a nice place. If the warning signs are ever big enough to warrant a vacation...
than that is what I will do. Otherwise I am as prepared as I think I can be.

If my theory about the subduction zone is in any way right...I would feel a bit more anxious if I were in Northern California/Southern Oregon. But we can talk about that on the other thread.

No no.. The only reason I am losing sleep is due to my 1 year old teething, and waking up at 5 every morning, sorry I wasn't clear on that. I grew up in California so I am.... used to earthquakes..I guess... My thinking is if something happens, it happens and deal with it. But be prepared. I still continue to look at what happens here up in the North West, just don't really let it effect my every day life.
The comment you made about northern california,/southern oregon.. Well Most of my family lives in Redding, CA (mothers side) So I constantly monitor that area, and these slow moving tremors starting in that area and moving northward to B.C...I could go on, but my son fell asleep 1 hour ago, and one beer down is making me type like a banshee...

That instrument is sited at a school. I guess perhaps there might be other reasons than positioning for a quiet signal.

Those other plots.
OMG earthquakes! Makes a pleasant change from interference and telemetry problems.

Ha! You were probably begining to wonder if I knew what a real earthquake looked like!
I actually do....it's just they are a bit boring, unless they are notable, so I seek out the unexplainable.
(which, as you have seen there is too much of these darned things)

I have never understood the seismos at the schools. They are usually totally unreliable, a waste of time and money really.

So nothing too wierd going on this morning, but here is a nice shot of some mircoseisms with a small micro quake thrown in!!! (in the olympic range)

@Isaac: Thanks for explaining...I can relate! Thank goodness they eventually grow up and get out of that phase. Although, I am now finding that they grow up a bit too fast!!

@patriciuscaesar & section69: For me, dreams are usually brought on from thinking about something, but I certainly never discount them. I have had other experiences before too, where either coincidence or 'something' else, they came to pass. Hopefully yours are just dreams!

....Then, this past year some members of the scientific community published a paper suggesting that there is a very large magma chamber, or caldera under most of Western Washington feeding our very active volcanic range.....

Have you ever considered that newly discovered magma chamber in Western Washington State may be connected to the Yellowstone??? Remember the Rockies are a "new" mountain range and I would not be surprise if there was some deep connections throughout the range.

Some one put together a LARE amount of information (Take with large grain of salt)

Ahhhhh....yes.
Eventually. It took me a little while. You should look at my 'putting it all together' thread. It is in my sig line. It take all of this a bit further.

On another note, I think I just experienced a small, local quake. (about 3-4 mins ago)You know, the kind where it feels/sounds like a truck hit your house? Well, either that or a truck DID hit my house!
Or there was an explosion nearby......

checking seismos!!
