You didn't make your point however. Why Blacks embrace (present tense) their oppressors (still present tense and plural i am thinking?) God?

If your point was one of ignorance and hate, then yes you made it. In one comment, you offend everyone except black atheists. How about black Christians who take ownership of God as theirs, and not belonging to their oppressors? We're talking millions and millions of black Christians in America; descendants of slaves and descendants of non-slaves.

Your post should be "why do non-atheists embrace God and not the great-nothingness like me?" Then nobody would be offended and you couldn't blame anyone for your 2010 case of oppression.


edit to add: You also state that you didn't intend this to be about slavery but if you didn't, you would never have used the word oppressors.

BTW, there is no such thing as a "lost race". Such notions put far too much value on the ethnic pride. This is a trait of a small minded people. Don't think like this.

Dude, I've never in my entire life had occasion to give that any thought but now you come to mention it, I don't seem to be able to agree with you.

I cannot imagine for a minute that the cultural memory of rape and enslavement would somehow just disappear in such a short period of time.

Although I don't relate to ethnic pride an nationalism etc. I cannot help but wonder if my family and most everyone that I knew, were descendants of people torn from their own lives and land to enrich the land that I now dwell. How would I feel about that would I just let it go ?

It's ok to be atheist. It's ok to be Christian, Muslim, Taoist, Buddhist, Jewish, etc...
It's ok to be any color too.

It's not ok to spread hate and feeding the divisions that still obviously exist.

I understand how this topic could still come up. I am sorry for any pain and suffering anyone anywhere has endured. I send out warmth, love, hugs to all.

It is actually a good question,

The Irish slave trade began when James II sold 30,000 Irish prisoners as slaves to the New World. His Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies. By the mid 1600s, the Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat. At that time, 70% of the total population of Montserrat were Irish slaves.



Ireland quickly became the biggest source of human livestock for English merchants. The majority of the early slaves to the New World were actually white.



From 1641 to 1652, over 500,000 Irish were killed by the English and another 300,000 were sold as slaves. Ireland’s population fell from about 1,500,000 to 600,000 in one single decade. Families were ripped apart as the British did not allow Irish dads to take their wives and children with them across the Atlantic. This led to a helpless population of homeless women and children. Britain’s solution was to auction them off as well.



During the 1650s, over 100,000 Irish children between the ages of 10 and 14 were taken from their parents and sold as slaves in the West Indies, Virginia and New England. In this decade, 52,000 Irish (mostly women and children) were sold to Barbados and Virginia. Another 30,000 Irish men and women were also transported and sold to the highest bidder. In 1656, Cromwell ordered that 2000 Irish children be taken to Jamaica and sold as slaves to English settlers.



Many people today will avoid calling the Irish slaves what they truly were: Slaves. They’ll come up with terms like “Indentured Servants” to describe what occurred to the Irish. However, in most cases from the 17th and 18th centuries, Irish slaves were nothing more than human cattle.



As an example, the African slave trade was just beginning during this same period. It is well recorded that African slaves, not tainted with the stain of the hated Catholic theology and more expensive to purchase, were often treated far better than their Irish counterparts.



African slaves were very expensive during the late 1600s (50 Sterling). Irish slaves came cheap (no more than 5 Sterling). If a planter whipped or branded or beat an Irish slave to death, it was never a crime. A death was a monetary setback, but far cheaper than killing a more expensive African.



The English masters quickly began breeding the Irish women for both their own personal pleasure and for greater profit. Children of slaves were themselves slaves, which increased the size of the master’s free workforce. Even if an Irish woman somehow obtained her freedom, her kids would remain slaves of her master. Thus, Irish moms, even with this new found emancipation, would seldom abandon their kids and would remain in servitude.

Well it probably did not make sense then but now it is time to get over it. The opressors are long dead as well as those opressed by slavery in america. The "black opressors" are today in fact black and they sell blood diamonds mined from their black slaves to buy weapons to go and kill more black people. Then rappers in america wear as many as they can and talk about "how their people were opressed" at a nice reasturaunt after watching the Black movie awards on the black entertainment channel (racial segregation) while wearing the stones produced through modern day slavery.
But why do they embrace the "god of their opressors" because they were given freedom to choose whatever faith they wanted.

Why only blacks? My Pagan and Celt ancestry were not taken into slavery, they were simply murdered, entire villages burned just for not accepting their 'oppressors's God. I'm an atheist who has read many religious texts and decided for myself that only the most ethical stories in life, be they from 2000 years ago or 2 minutes ago should be learned from and followed.

The answer I believe you are looking for is fairly simple. Proximity and cultural immersion. You live in what was oestensably supposed to be a secular society but over the last 3-400 years Christianity has become, by a country mile, the most favoured and accessible religion in teh US, as well as most European nations and many many more worldwide. Proximity to a church and the idea of congregation being at the heart of a community is what I feel gives rise to the mentality that 'you're either one of us or none of us'.

OP, do you consider yourself African or American? You cannot be both. In fairness Afro-Americans should be Ethiopian-Americans, Angolan-Americans, Niger-Americans, (insert African nation here)-Americans, if heritage was so important to you you would surely be proud of nationality and not an entire continent. I'm yet to meet a European who considers themselves 'European'!! You must also be aware of the fighting, wars and genocide which has raged throughout the African continent since day dot right up to today. Blacks oppressing blacks, and only sometimes out of religious belief. The label of Afro-American is out dated and I feel contributes nothing in a multi-cultural society, it only serves to further segregate, by the choice and at the behest of those who use the segregation as a way of reminding consistently of their ancestors oppressions.

My ancestors, in many cases, suffered much worse torment at the hands of the white man... yep crackers oppressing crackers (not to turn this into a racist issue, but I hear that term, along with Gringo and other derogatory terms, so I've made the decision that if you can drop the 'N-bomb' willy nilly amongst one another, then so can I until all the poor oppressed tanned people stop calling me by what I deem racist! - and I know I brought that up and not the OP or anyone else, but I feel it makes sense to mention here as I feel this thread is just another attempt at prolonging the black American history just like the Jewish do with the Holocaust that 99.999% alive today did not witness first hand... plus it's late and I've rambled on without thought, mod's feel free to do what you will with any / all of my post)

Yes, of course. You let it go. Why not? Was it you that was being treated in any way? Can you verify exactly what was done to your ancestors? Do you have specific stories, with names to put it to? Or is it what you imagine would have happened based on stories you have read and heard?

Regardless, it is baggage. Needless baggage. What does it benefit you to fill you mind with such thoughts? Will it make you a stronger person today? A better worker? Smarter? A better parent?

Things such as this can be likened to a back pack full of stones. Why carry them up the mountain with you?

It is detrimental the individual as well as the nation to allow prejudice to develop, especially when it is based on experiences that are not your own.
