Fair play to the Icelanders - Tell them to beat it.

I can't see how the Icelandic people can possibly be acountable for the mistakes and corruption of the few at the head of their banks and government. Greed corrupts and the Icelandic people are in the firing line instead of the real culprits that perpetrated those crimes.

That is the crux of the matter... and the short answer is they are not responsible. Let those who through incompetence, or greed, or both, messed up the system pay for their mistakes... NOT the people of Iceland.

Go Icelanders GO!!!

I think Iceland just set itself up for a whole world of hurt. You don't step to the banksters without getting smacked down. I agree with the Iceland voters in principle but, in truth they will have the money wrangled out of them one way or another.

The thing I hate about this is that when these central banks get rich, the citizens see no profit. When the central banks fail, the citizens are left cleaning up their bulls***. We need local banks again. Mom and pop operations would be the only thing that could help the economy now.

No, Iceland is broke because of corruption, plain and simple. The people should not be made to pay for this... the corrupt leaders SHOULD. Investigate before you spout off ignorant comments like this. Sorry to be so abrupt but comments like this really, really irk me.

[edit on 6/3/2010 by Iamonlyhuman]

Dont care if it irks you. There were many average joe investors that lost large sums buying into the same things that lost money for folks around the world, that what I was talking about.

So iceland is rotton at the top just like the US and UK whats new.

Well then, what you are talking about is a totally different and totally separate issue than what this thread is discussing – INFORM yourself. This thread is about the Iceland bankruptcy – none of which was brought on by individual investors’ losses. The Iceland bankruptcy is ALL, and ONLY, about the corrupt Icelandic leaders loaning billions of dollars to family members’ companies only to lose it. They secretly and blatantly illegally STOLE it.

This has nothing, whatsoever, to do with the people’s investments, wherever in the world they were.

Wow!

Some fairly ignorant comments here from inhabitants of certain countries who actually CAUSED the whole fricking mess in the first place (May & Mac ring any bells doofus's??).

You you rather uneducated 'people' do NOT realise is that becuase so much money was lost not only by the fat cat bankers who screwed us ALL up but many, quite innocent local councils and authorities (you would call them state govt's I think?) who were simply storing reserves there for a rainy day.

They lose that money as well.

This is all snowballed to MILLIONS of common, working class english people losing their jobs, homes and basically futures.

I think the number of house repossessions here in England alone (forget Scotland, Wales and NI) was 144k for 2009.

So before you congratulate the rather selfish and definately GREDY Icelanders, take a moment to think of the poor innocents who they are principally, voting on whether or not to prolong the crisis for nothing other than being xenophobic.

Peace.

Isn't it unthinkable how the manipulation of some paper and electronic numbers can rule the world?

Our collective mindset certainly does have such an immense power if this is what comes to hand...

The sad thing is that there will be AVERAGE people in both countries that are suffering from this, while the top dogs live a relatively conformable life.

Each country is trying to survive. Each country knows that both people will get hurt, but one will be in much more pain.

This is like chopping off a friends hand to save both your arms. Pain is coming either way and principles are not always first.

If an individual or a group robs a bank, only the individual or the group is responsible.
Not the whole town where the individual/group resides.
The people never entered into a contract binding them to be responsible for stolen funds.
The affected countries need to go after the perpetrators. Iceland needs to join resources with other countries that have been victimized, bypassing the power brokers that have robbed them.
These scams got out of hand and the people worldwide are angry. This is the time to harness that anger for change.

whatever the situation of any of these countries, it is unfair for any citizen of any country to have to repay a debt caused by a greedy few.

Here in the US students were protesting on thursday against tuition hikes. A reporter was telling a protester that there was no more money to hand out. She replied that we should stop both wars, and get the money back from AIG and all, that would pay for our education...but nooooo they were too big to fail so we the citizen ended up paying for those thieves and now we are pretty much told well tough luck if you can't afford state education.

I'm glad a country is standing up to the banks, no matter what their greed is. The banks are the big problem, they are the ones creating the situation we are in. They are the ones making us greedy thru their manipulations. It is time for things to change.

No matter what the retarded, corrupt or otherwise greedy and foolish "Big Wigs" of any country do, it is morally and ethically wrong to hold innocent people from either side responsible.

I say liquidate the corrupt businesses that these idiot politicians funded, as well as the assets of the idiot politicians, and pay at least something to the COMMON PEOPLE that were injured by this incident. Let the banksters who lost a few billion in fabricated wealth take it as a loss. They made educated decisions with calculated risks. The common folk doubtfully did anything remotely close.

How much could the Average Joe in the UK have lost? I doubt that, after voiding the eligibility of all others, that the amount is THAT high in comparison to what the banksters are going to cry.

It's called Responsibility to the responsible. And it's not the common people of ANY country that are responsible.

The Local authorities that invested money in Icelandic banks are as much to blame as anyone of the persons whom invested/gambled that money away.

Surely these idiots had an understanding of the nature of investment banking!? Why should we feel sorry for these fools that lost government money in some feeble attempt at gaining a profit from funds meant to be used for the benefit of the people in their districts?

The Icelandic people should not foot he bill for the major f--k ups of the corrupt and greedy low lives that permeate every society, world wide.

It's the people losing their homes and jobs that should be supporting the Icelandic people as well as insisting on the REAL perpetrators being brought to justice. Yet here we are with the same crooks in the same positions in banking and government doing the same thing - Screwing us well and truly over! How the hell can this possibly happen. That we are allowing the culprits to keep their jobs, whilst the people lose theirs left right and center?

If the precedent is set that the people of Iceland are to be held responsible then you will see in the near future that the people of America are held to the same level of responsibility.

Let us not forget that the entire situation has greatly effected both economic theory in far more extensive than expected ways.

Iceland was held up as an ideal of deregulation and free market economics by libertarian organizations such as the Cato Institute calling it a "Nordic Tiger." Their privatization of banks and usage of flat taxes failed as a viable policy. This has sent many economist back to the drawing board as Iceland was being hailed by the Center for Freedom and Prosperity for their deregulatory policies and the predicted growth made by economist failed. The problems run deeper than the government. This was a private entity, not a government one, let it fail. If it has proven anything, it is that economics is not a science and can not predict anything. (Predictions are a necessary component of science)

The same could be said for us here in America, and for the same reason. We now can see how the NWO is going to be put in place. By rendering the major portion of the population poor. Remember the Golden rule, "He who has the gold makes the rules. Because he can afford an army."

If anyone should pay back investors it should be the international banking and investment community, not tax payers of any nation.

At some point in time our governments need to do their job of protecting its citizens, follow the money trail, and start throwing crooks in jail for their fraudulent schemes.

How about we ALL start withdrawing our money (slowly so they don't freak). That way after a while ALL the banks will close and will lose some of their power. They may have more than us, but there are more of us. We may not kill them off (figuratively), but we could hurt them pretty well. Cash your paychecks (or if you can demand cash) change your tax status to EXEMPT (I dunno about other countries, but here you can file exempt if you expect to not owe taxes at the end of the year) and see what they do. As for other things you can do..... buy a diesel vehicle and make your own bio-diesel, that will knock out another tax, and get thinking on other ways to hit them. One person will do nothing, 1000 will raise suspicion, 10,000 will draw attention, 100,000 would raise concern, one million might cause action, and you see where I'm going.

We've all been "Enemies of The STATE" since the depression and possibly before anyway.

In case you missed it www.abovetopsecret.com.... Inform yourself.

Seems all of the benefactors of the STOLEN Icelandic billions have Nordic names.

The mess in Iceland has very little to do with what the rest of the world is experiencing. They would have been in this mess sooner or later anyway. These billions were very literally stolen from them by their corrupt leaders and given to family members.

Nice, straight forward thinking. I mean the system is failed so it will collapse anyhow. But good to see people want to take actions.

Peace and all the best.

You claim to be so educated about the whole thing so how come you don't even know what we are voting about ?

We aren't voting on not to pay, I'll leave the rest up to your impeccable research skills.

It's not about "plucky little Icelanders" sticking the finger to the bankers ; it's about paying back the British & Dutch taxpayers, who through their governments stepped into the breach to compensate 340,000 savers who had lost their money through these dodgy investments.

The argument isn't about paying the money back, most Icelanders would agree that the money has to be repaid. The argument is about the repayment terms, in particular the interest rate applied.

As far as I know, the agreement was for the money to be paid back to the Brit & Dutch governments over 20 years ... that's amazingly generous. The interest rate was perhaps less advantageous, 5.5%, but the Brits have now offered base rate plus 2.75%, which may be more palatable.

Taxpayer bailouts of your own banks is bad enough. But having to bailout Iceland's too is an outrageous burden on British & Dutch taxpayers ... hopefully an agreement will be reached soon which will keep all sides happy.

Why doesn't the EU bail them out?

Iceland is not responsible for the collapse of the world economy... GREEDY banksters and their profiteers are. They manipulate numbers for their OWN benefit, and steal from your average day investors with FEES (you let them borrow YOUR money and yet YOU have to pay THEM? How does that make sense?).

I hope the nation of Iceland can be a leader and a great example to the world on how to stand up AGAINST such tyranny!

peace and good energy to the people.
