I agree that anyone should be able to practice and believe in whatever they want, from a literal interpretation of the bible, to the frog prince of heaven made us.

I also encourage seeking truth, not just the how, but ask the question also why...(how is science, why is arguably religion)

I think the issue comes when the people try to say the why is also the how...and then try to force this onto the population, from stamping it on our money, making our kids learn in it school, saying it in our pledge, etc etc etc.

If I want to know more about christianity, I will seek it myself, at a local church, or pick up a bible, online searches, etc...I dont need the government force feeding me any belief system.

Churches enjoy tax free status, they have tons of bonuses in society, and are in fact their own (not so secret) society. Athiests become frustrated by this.

hope that clears it up for ya.

I don't think the issue (most of the time) is NOT with normal religious folks, its when people try to use religion from politics, to medicine and everything in between. Well then your gonna get the other side showing equal idiocy.

This country was founded on the ability to pray or not and believe in what you want to believe. People on both sides need to stop jamming it down each other throats.

For the record, I believe in some higher power, I think the old testament is rubbish, (Really worship me or go to hell? is that the guy you really want to spend eternity with, an almighty being with an ego?)

I think Jesus and Buddha are pretty spot on on how we should live our life.

(I been talking to, too many people in the UK lol Rubbish and Spot on lol)

Maybe a bible for Darwin's Theory Of Evolution? All though I would be happy with porn if I happened to have had a bible with me to trade, but being atheist that would be highly unlikely.

YES! I AGREE TOTALLY!!

Can anyone tell me how I can give out about 5 million stars to one post?

That would be fine if it was just speaking beliefs. Bashing others is a totally different story.

BTW, I don't challenge people to religious debates. In fact most of my friends are atheists. That's cool they can think what they want, but 99% of the time I am the one that is challenged.

I'm certainly not directing this at you, DaMod. You and I have had multiple pleasant debates on here, and I know you to be someone of integrity.

However, it is not that way with most christians. Most want to tel atheists that they are going to hell, that they are just too lazy to believe, that they have no morals, etc.

Atheists are also, as I said before, constantly bombarded with religious reference.

Truth be told, atheists and paganistic religions are THE MOST persecuted sects of human history. That they can actually speak their beliefs at this point, without being beheaded, is a good step forward, IMHO.

I would not be even slighly suprised if it was found out:

This was directed by a religious organization posing as athiests

and

The Westboro Baptist Church is a secret athiest organization showing the lunacy of christian interpretism

You just did.

It seems to me that Atheism has become the worlds newest organized religion.

I'm not a member of any religion, and i'm far from organised.

Why is it such a big deal to Atheists?

Maybe because YOUR religion and many others are responsible for a lot of the worlds ills?

You'd figure since they believe in nothing they wouldn't care so much about what others believe..

I don't believe in NOTHING. I believe there's an infinitely vast series of EVERYTHING out there... I just don't believe a god made it.

Surely we have as much right to say what we want, as you do?

Well, it's most likely a reaction to the same thing Christians have been doing to everyone else for years upon years in this country. If they would have just believed in God in peace as you say, instead of trying to force their morals into politics, pushing prayer in schools, blowing up abortion clinics, and harassing others in public in the name of Jesus, I'm sure this backlash wouldn't exist.

You reap what you sow, isn't that how it goes?

It seems like just a way to get attention..... What are these people? Toddlers?

Fed up is more like it. And taking the media whore approach with added shock value, it sure is working.

Even though I'm technically not an atheist, I say good for them for using their right to free speech AND religion!

"I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose free will"

And yet, you did. You not only touched it, you beat it up one side and down the other.

It seems to me that Atheism has become the worlds newest organized religion. I am so sick of the "look at me I don't believe in anything so I'm going to push my believing in nothing on everyone else and desecrate everything sacred that they hold just because I think it is crap" mentality.

I agree. To some atheists, they wear their beliefs on their sleeves and proceed to stuff them down anyone's throat who will listen. It's a shame. I don't get it. But I really do understand your frustration with people pushing their beliefs, no matter what they are, on everyone else. Religious people are just as guilty.

Why is it such a big deal to Atheists? You'd figure since they believe in nothing they wouldn't care so much about what others believe..

It's a common misconception that atheists "believe in nothing". As is clearly illustrated, atheists have beliefs, too.

Why won't these people just let us believe in God in peace?

My guess is that it's probably because believers have pushed their beliefs on other people for centuries.

Just let us believe whatever the [snip] we want to and we will do the same for you....

No you won't.
It has been proven for centuries that religious followers will do whatever it takes, including driving up my lane and knocking on my door to push their beliefs on me. Pretty sickening, isn't it?

I do agree that the atheists in the OP are doing this to get attention, but also to make a point. I support their little game, even though I don't agree with it. It's a matter of their first amendment rights. I think it's silly. They should have offered literature, but that wouldn't have been a news story.

I find it interesting that believers get so upset when atheists "push their beliefs on others" when they've been proselytizing as a matter of course forever.

That is probably the greatest thing that I have ever read!

Seriously, I would so hand out porn to people willing to trade in their Bibles.

I do believe that the lesson the atheists are trying to push here is that whether you are looking at porn or reading the Bible, you are not learning anything useful.

At least that is what I got from it.

The Bible is actually a great historical document. Remember, it was one of the first printed works...in a time when only the Elite could read and write.

The atheists in this case are missing a pretty major extrapolation here, in my opinion.

Personally i kind of agree.

It grants insight into an age we cannot understand.

But then again - we should not base our beliefs on something that may or may not have happened so long ago.

I don't like the approach of "smut for smut", I think it's distastful however I disagree with the idea that "both parties should shut up".

This is wrong!

As one poster above said churches are tax exempt, this is wrong.
Also I don't agree with the idea that "we should leave the religious alone".
No we shouldn't, not when they allow so much turmoil to occur.

The bible belt is the worst voters belt, politicians only need to go there and talk about abortion, gay rights, marriage and stupid stuff and the people are happy. No important issues!
It is TOO EASY to pander the religious groups, just too easy.

If the world would be a better place without religion, then isn't in the best interest of citizens of earth to somehow strive to abolish religion?

Same thing with "leave homosexuals alone". Maybe some people don't want their kids growing up in a growing homosexual society, it's as simple as "leave them alone", or "what happens behinds closed doors is none of your business". It's way more complicated than that.

As far as I know a teacher that preaches in a public school gets fired, they teach some parts in ancient world history, but religion was a very influential part of history. It would really be a disservice to historical accuracy not to include it. It's stamped on to our money because that was the motto they came up with at the time.... It's in a our pledge, who cares... Just don't say that part?

Here's the kicker though. If you where an Atheist before the US formed or even some ways after you would have been killed. No questions asked. Freedom of religion gives me the right to believe in god in any way I want, and for you not to without any fear of dire consequences. Isn't that a beautiful thing?

I mean seriously why do you care? You have the option not to listen after all.

You have the freedom to believe in nothing. That is a glorious thing, and I would be grateful not complaining about it.

Why would you let what they are doing with the porn-hand-out affect your level of peace? That makes no sense, they aren't challenging you personally, but you are taking it as a personal attack.

Unless someone walks up to you and tries to bring harm to you in some way, I would say that your peace is still intact. I think what is bothering you is the fact that they are allowed to do something like this.

Let be put it in a nicer way they should not push there agenda on the other. If someone wants to believe something more power to them. But they should not actively seek to sway others. This also means that missionaries should stay at home unless they are just going to help and not and try to sell God for food or shelter. It is wrong.

I see your argument but that isn't an addiction.
at best it is a compulsion.
with an addiction you get withdrawals that can threaten your life when that substance is no longer present in the blood.

also nobody ever wants to take responsibility for their actions.
addictions are used WAY too often as a scapegoat.

The problem with the bible is as followed:
The english translations, and even the translation from hebrew to aramaic then to greek was mistranslated. The storys we have today in no way, shape, or form are the actual texts from the ancient hebrew...which means your just teaching nonsense...its not even the bible, its just literally nonsense.

The ones that have taken the time to translate the bible properly find a very different story, edging on extraterrestrial more than omnipotent...so what do you teach, the founders believed in a one guy creator as the bible teaches today, or that sky gods (plural) occasionally come here to mess with us and fight their wars (literal transations).

Most wish for the fairy tale version of the bible verses the actual texts and that has no historical value at all.
