But, because of my view of it, it creates a paradigm that a piece of humanity is being packaged and sold, and humanity being sold always worries me.

I'm not so convinced of that, personally. We're engineered as sexual creatures and judging by our closest relative in the animal kingdom, the Bonobo, sex shouldn't be raised onto some very special pedestal. People have sex, people enjoy sex, regular sex contributes to physiological and psychological heath. I think sex should be in the same celebratory category as celebration of good, delicious healthy food because we all need to eat regularly, there's no shame in that fact. Food, health/fitness & sex all seem to fall into that same category for me, as kind of a lifestyle thing but more for the innocent enjoyment of good food, regular long walks and fun & sensual sex.

There are food magazines, there are fitness magazines and there are sex magazines. I don't think we should take pornography so seriously.

And for all the people who take atheists trading making a statement by trading smut for bibles and extrapolate it and go on to say "Why do atheists have to attack my beliefs? Why would they even talk about religion? Why would they do anything with a belief based on nothing?" You probably need to see things from the other side.

This remind me a lot of poopstorm that came about because of the atheist billboards. I don't understand how people could possibly be personally offended by this kind of thing, by some idiots trolling believers at a college. Do you realise how silly you look, those of you who get so offended?

Why is non-believers doing, thinking, saying what non-belivers would do, think, say offensive to people who do believe?

I'm not really shocked by this. Why would I be shocked by the actions of people that have no moral compass.

Please define a moral compass ?

It is interesting I have no belief in the xtian god but I have higher morals than it.

It shows that you have a lack of imagination. I guess I can see why you could not see the Bible as a pornographic book.

This wasn't a trolling as I may have thought, nor was it limited to bibles (for those people who said they were pussies for taking on the bible not the Koran). It was a statement and a good one at that.

They don't "desecreate"[sic] them, as explained in the blog. To these students, something like a book burning is abhorrent regardless of the nature of the literature.

If the book only existed in a dig somewhere in Iraq and was dicovered by these flakes tomorrow.

No doubt it would be regarded as just another text like what happened in the 50s when some Gnostic Gospels showed up in Egypt. The bible wouldn't be accepted by modern religious people, and considering how Christianity has evolved over the centuries to slightly more compatible with secular society, watering down and becoming this nonsensical "moderate" Christianity, these hypothetical believers would scoff at the bible and it's evil totalitarian dictator god.

If I were near them I'd have to stop by and see how they man up.

No doubt others did too, which is partly what they wanted.

No. They had to use porn and further cheapen their stand and their reputation. Weak. Very weak you atheist morons (directed at the folks in the article, not people on ATS). You just set your own movement back 30 years, if not 50.

I'm sorry, no moral compass? Then why are atheists not going out and raping, killing, stealing and other horrible crimes? Why do many atheists consider murder a terrible act if we have no moral compass?

You think morals are based on what you don't do? I think it's very ironic that people steal morals from the Bible and then list how they don't do this and that and the other. What you don't realize is that the grossiest of immorality is to deny the Creator. This is why Hell exists. Not because of what you don't do, but because of what you constantly do. That is spit in the face of God.

You think morals are based on what you don't do?

He saying that even without the "moral guidance" of the bible, atheists manage not to be amoral beings. He then when on to show (with statistics) that a lower proportion of atheists are criminals as compared to the proportion of religious people who are also incarcerated, therefore we are less bad on average than people who actually claim the moral highground by citing their belief in a god.

No atheists steal morals from the bible, most don't even read the bible. And if morals came from the bible, then why is it that nonchristian societies like Japan or Norway manage to not be brutal savages? Most people have an innate sense of morals which evolutionary psychology has bestowed us with - as can be demonstrated by looking at the morals of other higher brained animals.

If the most important thing is to believe then not only is all the "moral guidance" of the bible pointless, atheists are screwed because they are so made as the cannot believe. You can't just choose to believe, I could go do church and sing hymns and pray to Jesus, but just doing these things won't suddenly make me believe - we atheists can't simply choose to believe whatever we like, when it comes to matters of god we'll believe what can be reasoned or demonstrated. But no, god asks us for faith inspite of evidence so we are screwed.

People need to understand something about everyone else...People have a right to believe whatever they want. No matter how wrong or right someone thinks it is. Atheists and Christians have been bickering like this for years. Atheists always do something excessive according to Christians and then these debates go on and on. Of course something like this was bound to be blown out of proportion and made into an event...Christians take things like this personal no doubt when the bible is brought into things like this its easy to see why anyone would be upset....This is what happens when you have two religions actually contradicting each other =) However...


If people refuse to open their eyes, they aren't being forced into trading in bibles for porn, its by choice. People aren't being forced to give up their beliefs at all. If its truly offensive to you- ignore it or do something about it....I'm tired of hearing people complaining about this. We live in an age of enlightenment...If people want to rid themselves of a bible/book I don't understand what the hooplah is about. This is more enticing for students to get porn, rather than see a message. I would assume most of the students doing this are probably non-believers anyways, rather than people converting to atheism for it.Were it any other book but the bible it wouldn't be treated like "the biggest sin of all time". If it was trade the Koran or Torah for Porn- you would probably never hear of this..


When do we realize that this isn't 1945 anymore? We are supposed to be evolving and growing as a people...but clearly we aren't going anywhere but down.

Actually, basic morals are written on the heart, but the author and originator is God. Further, no one can believe in the Messiah unless God allows them to. God gives people the ability to believe and He gives them the Holy Spirit to confirm their beliefs. No one is "screwed." All you have to do is pray that God would give you the ability to believe. Give you eyes to see and ears to hear.

Do you even understand morals?? What the purpose of morals are?? Probably not. You are probably thinking that "moral" means living in peace and harmony with your fellow man. I.E. not stealing, murdering, etc. etc. That is not what morals are. "Morality" in the highest form of definition means doing that which brings the most glory to the one that Created you. Living in peace and harmony with fellow man is only a tiny piece of that...and based on the true definition of morality I would have to say that athesit (especially those that battle against God) are the most immoral people that walk the earth, but I still love you anyway.

Try with the Koran... See what happens.

Firstly you're talking to an atheist, so I don't know what could possibly possess you to form an argument on the premise of the bible being true. That's not just irrational, it's anti-rational. What you're saying has no weight on me because I clearly don't accept the premises.

And secondly, I am screwed according to the bible. I've committed the unforgivable sin. Since I cannot be forgiven, I am going to hell (presuming the the bible is true) and there's nothing that can be done to stop that fact.

LOL! Actually they're a product of evolutionary psychology. A commune with innate morals is a strong commune, and those without them die out faster due to more self-destructive tendencies. This is why every species of higher brain animals shares more or less the same set of morals. This is also why people without any exposure to religion can and are good people.

Morals = game theory, hence there being no moral absolutes.

That is not what morals are. "Morality" in the highest form of definition means doing that which brings the most glory to the one that Created you.

I feel my friend that the reason they don't want to just 'leave you and those like you' in peace is because this is a two way street. You have a constant barrage of 'religious' beliefs being forced upon other people all of the time. Like abortion clinics, wars and those who support them (or vice versa), education, sex, etc. etc. etc...

It's not all religious people that push the above issues to the point where people get fed up. I understand that. But the issue is that there are many who do and thus they open up all religion to ridicule by those who choose not to believe in a god or gods.

I believe that once religious people stop preaching to others in public, stop knocking on doors trying to indoctrinate and/or ridicule (not verbally but by their actions of making those who do NOT believe as they do feel as though they are beneath them or doomed in some way), forcing their beliefs of the above issues upon the general populace (yes, one hell of a run on sentence) that the opposition will lose their thunder.
