This has been a recurring thought of mine for quite some time now. Now I bet every single one of you here knows that the government does things behind our backs on a daily basis......and many of those things can be classified as despicable. Due to the fact that the world's governments are aggressively stepping up on eavsdropping techniques, I suggest we do the same thing the other way. We should create our own secret society founded on the principles of freedom, peace and fairness, and whose sole motive is to closely observe the governments and make sure they are not secretly doing anything unethical (and if they are, to alert the public of what they are doing). But be warned, this will not be an easy task. There will be many things we will have to deal with along the way:

1. Infiltrators - government agents who are sent to spy on our organization and/or spread disinfo into it. We must carefully scrutinize each new member that is assimilated into our society; make it clear to them that there is no turning back. Remember: just beause someone says that they did something doesn't mean that they actually did. Of course, this shouldn't be too much of a problem if we are able to keep ourselves discreet.

2. Obtaining resources - spying on the government isn't as easy hollywood or that British superhacker make it look. Spying through the internet would not be our first method uless we obtain a group of extremely powerful and secure computers, which are hard to obtain unless we build them ourselves. Instead, we start out small and work up, braintorm discreet ideas that won't get us in trouble.

3. Government crackdown on leaks - If we discover incriminating evidence, the worst thing to do is to quickly go around brandishing it, that makes it easier to get caught and easier for the government to plug the leaks. What we should do instead of that is to brainstorm ways to strategically post and publacize it so that it can spread faster than it can be taken down.

4. Staying in the shadows - you all know by now that the government has a vast arsenall of eavesdropping tehniques, ranging from cellphone wiretaps to internet wiretaps (they're probably watching me type this right now). We need to brainstorm ideas on how to avoid them and we also need to brainstorm ideas of what techniques they're using that we don't know about. We also need a series of safe places to stay and carry out our tasks. A single centralized hideout is a terrible idea because if it is found out, our whole society would collapse. Instead, we need a large network of hideouts that communicate with each other.

5. Assassins - this will be our most formidible threat. And It becomes greatest when out in public. me of the weapons they use are frightningly swift and covert. When in public, be extremely alert for anything that could potentially hide a killer, or anything that could kill you "accidentally". Note that we will never become assisins ourselves, for that would go against what our society is founded on.

6. Planning senarios in case of getting caught - this is the most critical part of our society that we need to focus on, and perhaps the most difucult to undertake. We need to think up ways on how to prevent this and if we can't, how to hide everything we know.

7. Intelligence - lets face it, the blood of our society is going to be extremely smart people who have no affilation with the government. They will help us carefully brainstorm projects and interpret the data that we collect.

8. Classifying/Organizing members - another safeguard we must use is to structure our society so that an outside person would have a difficult time determining who does what, and what does what. I suggest designating each member with a number, so that no one knows each other's real name.

9. Naming our society - We need a name! We would pretty much be naked without one!

If I may have missed any issues, please let me know!

From my experience of secret societies (whether they exist or not:mad
. Dont send anyone to a court for comitting no crime or inspire their neighbors to illegally detain them forever. That is if you want this secret society to work right.
So everybody is equal in all ways.

We need a secret hand shake.
We need a place to meet. Denver International Airport?

OOPS! Almost forgot. We need a 13 year old genius to lead us
into our bright future. He needs to have a cool name.

I hope you understand that by using a public message board that is easily accessed by numerous internet users to form a secret society, pretty much undermines the secret part of the society you would endeavor to form in this method.

Then its pretty silly to refer to them as "secret societies" isn't it?

secret societies require secrecy.
Once secret you start to fall into the same trap as other secret societies.

Best to belong to a group which is open and honest with no secrets, can't get caught in a lie if you have no secrets to hide

I have no doubt that some, if not most of the secret societies I belong to will by what I have to say, excommunicate me from the "brotherhood". What most people don't understand is that most (if not all) secret societies are little more then fraternal organizations with a pathetic sense of self importance. In the ancient Greek tradition a fraternal organization was an organization that was willing to be embarrased in order to discover truth. It was not supposed to care. OK, I guess that depends on what you mean by the word embarresed...

There is a possibility this could be a nice way for those on ATS to be taking a more active part in the discovery of new and/or unusual ideas. There is no question that there is a lot of very hard core information in the UFO area I come accross from time to time, and would love to be able to have qualified investigators be able to jump on a new sighting. I am not going to be around forever. What form would you like such a society to take, and what would be it's objectives? What are it's limits or when has it gone to far? Young opperatives in this area need to be kept on a short leash. The desire to think their James Bond, whth people who never have a problem thinking their James Bond, as long as it's not their money, are more then willing to do.

Well, as a former member of the intelligence community, thats just not how it works. I agree our own secret society has promise. Are you willing to discuss terms ?

Actually the worlds working classes do have their own 'secrets', politics, dress traditions, etc., that I bet most of you self labeled 'middle class' types here have no clue about.

No change will ever come from the 'middle classes', you're too comfortable, it's poverty and wealth that cause people to action, all the apathy of society is in the middle classes. You're the consumers not the doers. Revolutionaries come from the working classes and believe it or not the upper classes (look up Penny Rimbaud, a true revolutionary who came from the upper classes).

The middle classes will just keep waiting till someone else does something, then join in the celebrations and take the credit. Ooooh WE won! Yeah sure you did...

But even this idea flies in the face of what most posters here yell about! To satisfy them, we need full names, addresses, SSN's or other personal ID numbers, spouse names, occupations, etc.. As per many posters on this site,we MUST have all of this information .Otherwise an individual is lying and hiding something. As per others on this site, The only criteria to be a "secret society" member is to refuse to divulge personal information.
