Just as Bruce lee said, before he began training in martial arts, a punch appeared to be just a punch – that is, a tool for fending off an attacker. But When he began to study martial arts, the punch became much more – it became symbolic of power, of control, of possibility, of achievement. Yet, when he finally understood martial arts , he realized that a punch was just a punch. A tool for fending off an attacker

Before one takes on any sort of spiritual work, ... they would think meditation is a waste of time.

When one begins actively seeking, meditation becomes a connection to something they don't understand. they might wonder how they ever got along without it.

However when one becomes a master, meditation becomes a waste of time, for the master knows and understands his connection to all that is.

so what has changed ?? perspective.

You can change that with a few years of deep meditation, or a few seconds of being out of body.

You may search the world trying to unravel the mysteries of the universe, only to realize that it was all right there, ... inside you. Afterall, is not the world just ourselves pushed out ? a mirror in which to define ourselves.

The "other world" is your true Self

The way to experience deep meditation is to pronounce the word OM and focus on the vibrations you feel in your head and chest. You don't need drugs to experience this.

Remember that you are already what you need to be, all you have to do is realize it.

You are not a bad person, since goodness and badness are the result of past karma, and all karma can be absolved through transcendental meditation.

Om purifies the chakras. Unify the mind, that is wisdom.

I was quite surprised the one day....I was just playing sacred spirit and sort of 'stretching' as you would in yoga, I could feel every muscle in my body working and burning, by basically doing nothing but slowly bringing body parts together.

I've felt like I've been burning, literally, like someone put me in a BBQ-- exceptional heat, not from yoga or body movements though. It seems to happen on the verge of deeper paralysis. It might be smoothing out now for me by just sticking to it and not letting it disrupt the state.

The thing about meditation, I see people doing weird things like moving their eyes up (with lids closed) to focus on the pineal gland...obviously then, it seems quite complicated. It actually hurts to do that,lol...

I agree. If I stare up there its by redirecting my attention. I'm not looking to induce eye cramps (and they will happen).

EnlightenUp, The eye cramps are definitely a very common thing. Some simple eyes exercises will likely help you out on this. Begin by closing your eyes. In unison stretch your eyes downward and then up. Do this for five minutes gradually stretching further and further. After this, begin rotating your eyes in a clockwise circle and then in a counter-clockwise circle.

The reason you experience he discomfort is the same reason any muscle hurts when you stretch it beyond its normal capacity. If you always use a muscle it takes much longer for it to become fatigued. The reason your eyes hurt is because they are not used to being stretched like this, eventually it will become more comfortble.

Well, thank you! I took your advice and did a little EYE-ron pumping. Unexpectedly, my mood seems a little lighter in addition to my eyes feeling more relaxed. It seems to relieve stress. It seems alot can get locked up there.

EnlightenUp, I'm glad that it worked for you! I had the same issue for while also, but was able to get through it with that exercise.

Another element of the physical self that is very important to focus on relaxing is the jaw muscles. The jaw is the most important part of your body to focus your relaxing on; I have read that our body carries the vast majority of its tension in the jaw area. It is very important to constantly make sure your jaw is thoroughly relaxed the entire time you are meditating or projecting.

After always keeping this in check it will eventually become second nature; once you make the conscious effort to relax the jaw it will stay relaxed. Some people are said to be able to relax their jaw to such a degree that if someone pushed their jaw horizontally it would just wobble or sway as a completely fractured limb would, this should be a goal of anyone serious in meditation and becoming familiar with ones self. I have learned that thoroughly relaxing your jaw prior to and during ANY exercise or activity will demonstrate very positive results.

The same rotation method as described for the eye exercise should be employed for the jaw. It is important to remember that when doing exercises like this, slower is better than faster. Do not rotate too fast. You cannot rotate too slow but going too fast will surely injure you.

Good luck

Heres another great technique for pushing your consciousness over the edge.

Get to the point that I described earlier wherein your consciousness is constantly drifting in and out. This time, you do not imagine yourself in a field of flowers.

You need to think of a fairly small object that you commonly hold in your hands. The most important aspect of this object is that it has a very definite texture and/or shape. You essentially need to imagine something that your mind can very physically relate to. A cellphone works for a lot of people because of its shape, I like to use a tennis ball because of the definite shape and the very unique texture.

Imagine holding this object in your hand. Experiment with holding it in different hands to find out which hand is more receptive, choose to work with that hand. Imagine this object in your hand in the normal holding position. Next, if you are imagining a cellphone slowly flip the phone over in your hand, you should have a very definite sensation. Continue to slowly move the object around in your hand, noticing very vividly how it feels in your hand, your 'muscles' as you move the object.

While doing this you should experience very definite sensations, most likely while you are moving the object in your hand as opposed to while it is just sitting there. Again, the most important elements re that the object is something that you are very familiar with holding in your hand and that is has a VERY definite texture.

Again, the sensations you will be feeling are that 'edge' that you are looking to push your consciousness over. Once you find the VERY strong vibrating/tingling sensations you need to take note of how every part of your body and consciousness feels at that very time. This is done so that you can more easily 'find' the sensations in the future. You can eventually get to the point where it may only take a few minutes to push yourself over the edge.

I recently started doing yoga and have meditated a handful of times...Since I have started meditating I have definitely been having more dreams and am realizing during the dream that I am dreaming...Is that normal when you first start meditating or just coincidence?

My ultimate goal is to astral travel and I wonder how long does it take to get to that point?....Thanks

Usually I wake myself up when I realize I am dreaming but then being awake is also a type of dream -- this is realized when you have precognitive dreams. Astral travel is advanced -- despite everyone claiming otherwise. You can have etheric travel which is a bit different -- Robert Bruce gets into this a bit. Here's my blogpost on him:

I need help with meditation techniques. As you cannot always rely on what is posted on the internet, I thought I'd ask some of the more experienced ATS members.

Okay, so my goal is to see what I already know is there....that part of me I haven't seen. The other 'world' I know is there but I cannot see. I want to understand myself better and fix myself from the inside out...There are a lot of things that bother me, most subconsciously...I would like to face them, and I am prepared to encounter some unsettling....realizations. I know there are two sides of me, the good overpowers the 'bad' (I think that is what I am afraid of, finding out that I am actually a bad person & I don't even know it.)I know I need to align my chakras, I know they are are way off at the moment and probably have been for a long time...

I wish to achieve this without the need for the use of mid altering substances such as '___', as I see it as a shortcut. There is a reason we cannot just use/experience the naturally occurring '___' in our brain at the drop of a hat... I feel it takes time and practice for a reason. Such an experience imo, you need to prepare for..It is not for the lighthearted, and it is not a toy.

I don't know if this helps, but a bit of background on my aura colors... I have mostly blues, violets, and magenta. As well as a tinge of tan, with a slight overlay of red. (I know the red is not a great thing, but hey that's me.)

Where do you start with meditation? What techniques would I begin to use...? What music would allow me to get more in tune with what I am trying to achieve....
I gather that each technique has a different outcome...

I think I have set up a mental block, as much as I want to experience full blown meditation I am also afraid of what I might see and experience...I am ready to let go of that block now. I know I am opening myself up to a lot, good and bad- because without the one there is no other.
What do I need to expect?
I have accepted the fact that I might encounter things that scare me....and if so, how do I turn and come back? Do I come back, or do I stay and face it?

So many questions!

Your help would be greatly appreciated...
Love
J

I'll do what ever I can to help. My avatar is Arbiture, which means mediator, negotiator, and peace maker. Thats who I am and what I do on a 9 to 5 basis. I am more then willing to work with you for as long as it takes for you to succeed. You give me the impression in your post the stakes are very high. In the post Roman world, about the year 550 AD, people in what had been the empire saw it fragment. They diden't know why it happened, or how there was such a total crash. They only were aware that the world they lived in was gone. Why mention a society that is now extinct? Alll great old cultures made one massive mistake; they diden't adapt and became extinct.

What I do in a negotiation is to first understand as much as I can about all parties involved including mine. One way I evaluate my possible weakness is to have an unfamilier bunch of guys show up at my company for the purpose of testing my peoples skills in both defense and offense. I call them my war gamers. I get as much information before hand as I can.

The next point I would make is one thing you can always do is listen to your self. Trust your instincts. Use your day to day people skills. I may be wrong, but you sound very personable. People who often get "high marks" in people skills have the abilility to what is called "mirror" other people. That means the very, very subtle mimicry of voice patterns, body movements, speach content, and much more. I hope this helps a little. I post later with other stuff if this is usefull. Take it easy.

I stopped meditating when I began to have OBE"s, ... and I was reborn of sorts.

In life, often we think there is some magic solution to all of our problems, and doing work " inside" will change our outside perspective. Meditation is simply a tool, a means to a ficticious end.

Intastella:

Your reply was the most insightful response on this thread.....but sometimes people don't want the truth. I've been "seeking" for about 40 years now. 2 years ago my mind was blown open in a full on enlightenment experience. In case any of you seasoned meditators are curious....it is an experience where your mouth is stretched wide in total and utter AWE, tears are streaming down your face, your eyes are BUGGED OUT, and you are saying to yourself-
"OMFG!!!!!!!!!!! I REMEMBER."

And at that moment- you Realize and KNOW that you are God.

The veil drops and all is clear. No ifs, ands or buts. No doubt, no fear. 5 seconds of this experience trumped all 40 years of study and seeking. I wouldn't trade those 5 seconds for a winning Powerball ticket. For at that moment I knew I was an eternal spiritual being who happened to be "playing Human" for a few minutes. Playing "hide-n-seek" with myself. Because there is NOTHING more fun than "winning the game" and remembering that you are God, and then setting up the next "game".
All of this Reality, every book, movie, religion, people, Earth, the galaxy, hell the whole universe is nothing but your personal Holodeck to play in.
You see, we are all God. Yet there is only One. This is a paradox I know...but too damn bad, that's the way it is. You are all there is. This so called "Reality" you think is so real is nothing but an illusion that you project out of yourself. You are THE powerful spiritual being that some pray to. Pretty funny eh? Cause you learn real quick that you (as God) has a great sense of humor, and having FUN is God's favorite thing to do. God's thoughts are so cool. They are multidimensional and visual....fractal.....constantly folding out of themselves into the most perfect sacred geometry. All fitting together in a great 6 dimensional cosmic puzzle. So Freakin Cool.

And you also realize there is no death. Only your Ego's fear of death! But he's like a child that can be taught the truth....so don't let that glorious bastard control your thoughts! The ONLY REASON any form of meditation, sensory deprivation, drumming, dancing, or entheogen can lead to altered states or even enlightenment is because any of these methods can suppress the EGO long enough for you to WAKE THE HELL UP and realize who and what YOU REALLY ARE. And once you do- all these methods become like crutches that you will wean yourselves off of as you shed the old belief systems that tell you you need them.

In the meantime....don't diss anybody elses methods of EGO suppression. There are a million different roads to reach the same destination...and who are you to judge what vehicle your brother wants to take? ;-)

Namaste-

There is a paradox in meditation. It requires you to be very paitent, but also requires you to do what I call "disoulve time". In doing so you see (at least for me) a more complete sense of reality. A state of mind where there is no past or future. Only the present. If you can picture time as a blanket laid out flat on the floor. Walk accross the blanket, you move through time as we under stand it. Sit down on the floor and wrap the blanket around you, and both past and future becomes now. Meditation is both an art and a science. I my self use several pieces of music to get me "in the mood", and get my brain in the right sync. This has been proven by my generating, and having measured alpha waves when I meditate.

People have many different methods for getting in sync. But they all involve blocking out outside noise. Most people just use a low light and room with no noise. Some people stare into a candle (this one goes back a LONG way). I use a somewhat cold, dim room and certain music. The music that works best for me is the little known group "Its a beautiful day" The song is "White Bird". At least in me the response it produces is almost sexual in its intensity. (which is odd, because it's a very mellow song). So try a number of methods. Keep in mind your meditating, your not taking a test. There is no right or wrong answer. When you figure it out, you'll be the first to know.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the insightful replies, they have been a great help.
So, I have been trying the Kundalini meditation techniques...It is obviously going to take a while to master. So, thanks for the advice on patience, it is definitely a key part in mastering meditation..

The only things I am having problems with at the moment is keeping still and keeping my back straight.

I find myself swaying slightly, which is ok I suppose as I am able to concentrate better, rather than focusing too much on staying up straight.
My back absolutely kills me, It feels as though it is going to snap after about 5 min of sitting up straight.

That is where the Yoga comes in obviously I need to strengthen my back muscles and joints.

Another thing- the potbelly breathing is almost impossible for me to maintain when I'm sitting up straight. As you know, when sitting up straight, your stomach muscles are kept rock hard, now how are you suppose to relax them for the potbelly breathing without losing your posture?
I suppose I'll figure it out somehow.

I consider it acceptable to meditate at rest upon one's back, completely flat posture, & find that it is difficult to fall asleep if every effort is made to avoid motion. The slightest turn to the side, and you're out - otherwise, the body relaxes without the mind entering dreamland.

Helpful Meditations.

Mindfulness of emotional calm, mindfulness of love, from moment to moment. Disciplined kindness.

5 minutes in Asana, meditating on impermanency. That consciousness is maintained moment to moment as the result of energy transfer. This meditation, an attempt to notice consciousness-as-energy transfer, the introduction to Asana.

10 minutes in Asana, meditating on causality. That things happen as the inevitable result of a constant stream of causation, near if not infinite in dimensions. Karma as a blind universal force.

15 minutes in Asana, meditating on blamelessness (and forgiveness). That all one's misdeeds and triumphs happened because of karma, and are not worthy of payment (pride), nor condemnation. That all the triumphs and misdeeds of others are similarly consequential, rather than *impressive. A surrender of emotions of pride, hatred, humiliation, and guilt - a conscious release of such delusions.

30 minutes in Asana, meditating on love, and only love. First, focus on something you have always loved and loved most, then maintain this emotion as your thoughts come, by gradual increments, to bare on that which it is most difficult for you to love.

From moment to moment, day to day, blamelessly, meditate on love - and focus one's deeds on objective altruism.

A meditation to transcend baggage.

Where there is a psychological wound, meditating in asana, having focused in on a positive emotion, travel to the wound - accept that it happened, maintain positive emotional focus, and move on to the next wound. The effort is to notice the point wherein trauma was injected into the psyche, subtle or severe, and to release the main - to consciously acknowledge it and, without struggling, let go.
