Great pictures PM,and yes it's very similar to what I'm saying. Main difference is that while it's suspected the plume that fed the cascades is cut off (and pooled), I am suggesting that the plume in Indonesia is not, but still actively finding it's way through fissures/etc to the surface, hence all the active volcanos.

I know there are some holes in the theory, but that's why it's a theory
and since, in the world of geology there are still new discoveries being made all the time, it makes it a little easier to speculate!

Take a look at this. You may find it of interest.

Flood basalts, Mantle plumes and Mass Extinctions

Edit: Forgot to add - Cut off and pooled? Mm, so if this is the case then where is the pressure and feed for the volcanoes? Is this saying that the Cascades Mountains should be dead > Obviously they are not and neither is Yellowstone. Basically it is blather because they don't actually know and your guess is as good as theirs. Experts? Sheesh!

Exactly. I should try and find that article....ofcourse it is only one theory, and not the accepted one. I like it, because it subscribes to my other theory
about the PNW. I think it ties into the magma chamber under a large portion of the PNW theory, which is what would be feeding the volcanos...hence when the juan de fuca plate 'drops', it causes pressure on this chamber...and I think it would subscribe to the deep tremors too. Picture a massive ocean of lava locked in a chamber under the continent. It would have it's own 'tides'...or eb and flow, albeit very slow. Perhaps that is the tremors and why they happen on a 12-15 month cycle? Anyways...I digress.

I will read that article you linked now and I'm sure, have a comment. You can always count on me for that!

Edit to add: oh man, *rubbing my hands together*...I read the article. I knew that first picture looked familiar, I have been through the columbia basin many times. Great fossils there.

That image they have showing the basalt flows really makes you think....I mean, this could affect how we look at the continents forming and drifting (or not?).

Now let me throw this one out there:

The surface manifestations of mantle plumes are often called hotspots. Plumes are thought to originate very deep in the Earth - perhaps at the core-mantle boundary for the larger ones and at a depth of about 600 km deep for the smaller ones - but they seem to be related to the breakup of continents (rifting), so there is some influence from global plate tectonic processes. (A numerical simulation of the development of a mantle plume has been developed by Paul Tackley of UCLA

Remember those deep quakes from not too long ago?:

God this just keeps getting worse.

Death toll rises to 122 as Indonesia volcano torches villages

LINK

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia — Searing gas avalanched down an Indonesian volcano with a thunderous roar, torching houses and trees and incinerating villagers as they fled Mount Merapi's worst eruption in a century. Dozens of bodies found Friday raised the death toll to 122.

Its latest activity started Oct. 26. After Friday's explosion — said by volcanologists to be the biggest since the 1870s — officials announced by loudspeaker that the mountain's danger zone had been expanded to 12 miles from the crater

Despite earlier predictions that dozens of big explosions that followed Merapi's initial Oct. 26 blast would ease pressure building up behind a magma dome, eruptions have been intensifying, baffling experts who have long monitored Merapi.

There are some really graphic pics at the link....

I am praying for the people of Indonesia

Thanks for that. Good to know they are working again. I had this:

but could not post as they were bust!

Edit: Click on seismisitas - see all the yellow - avalanches occurring - probably means pyroclastic flow?

I have been watching this since it started as tiny traces. I did loads of screen grabs at the time. I will try and upload some tomorrow.
Could one of you experts please explain a little what this is please? I am a total begginer and I would love to know what I am seeing here.
Thank you

I have a hypothetical (maybe) question.
Bear with me here.
Everyone is making a big to-do about Obamas Trip and Nov 6th. Personally, I am much more worried about this situation with Merapi. That being said. If someone had advance knowledge of this whole area blowing, and having worldwide effects, where, logistically would the effects be felt last?

Would it be the part of the globe geographically just west of the event?
Meaning, would the ash travel east from the event, around the globe, then reach, say India, last?

It's a whole lot of shaking going on! The signature of Armageddon! (No alright sorry that was uncalled for)

Basically there is so much movement that the seismos are plain saturated (overloaded) and so it is difficult to make out the traces.

IF they could determine that and then get everything organised for him to go to India with planes and ships and personnel I would be very surprised, and anyway isn't one of his stops after India in Indonesia?

Huh? You lost me there. The Pres is on his way to India now, right? Here is the itinerary:

United States President Barack Obama has planned for three day trip to India. The United States White House has released the schedule of US President Barack Obama to India.

On 6th November 2010 US President Barack Obama reaches Mumbai and visit Taj Hotel on behalf of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.US President Barack Obama next visit the Gandhi Museum. Finally US President Barack Obama visit to the business summit organised by US-India Business Council, where he will meet and greet India Inc.

On 7th November 2010 US President Barack Obama will celebrate Diwali with Mumbai children at a local school.US President Barack Obama later interact with university students at the Town Hall
. His speech will be centred around democracy and Indo-US ties.

On 8th November 2010 US President Barack Obama visit New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Pratibha Patil and US President Barack Obama will be addressing the Parliament.

On 9th November 2010 US President Barack Obama will move from Delhi for Jakarta.

Lets just leave him out of the equation.
If that whole sector Indonesia blows, where would one feel the effects of the eruption last. Would not the ash and fallout erupt first, upwards, and then the winds aloft take it east? So that the last place that felt the effects would be due west of where the actual event occurs. That's what I am getting at.

Forget about the Pres.

Would the ash travel east, over the Pacific and hit the US?
Then continue circling the globe from east to west?

Thanks all for the links and updates!!! Terrible what is happening to the people in Indonesia - who cares where the Obama clan ends up, they have bomb tunnels - these people do not! It looks as if this is getting worse by the minute, will return often for updates.
