:-) correct ..i mesured from the centers of the volcano's ...
hmm if an volcano would erupt 40KM from the edge of Yellowstone the world would go crasy..........
But.. I ran into an old artical (2005) who is suggesting that not Toba but a brand new supervolcano is rising up...
that in combination with the heating up of the ocean in that specific aeria last years (near toba) could be very well be the rising up of Toba's Child...

I am not Puterman but I confirm that "red alert" issues are normal once a volcano "erupts". They are also often used to inform aviation to avoid flying over that zone till further notice.

If I remember well there are also different scales in red alert issues, one to four I think but I could be mistaken.

Lucky us an eruption is not a trigger for another volcano to erupt so we are not looking at an eruption at Toba, or a hidden new super volcano, at the moment.

I just found this about the eruption. According to the Jakarta Post, the government is admitting they screwed up with warnings about Sinabung's eruption.

My apologies. I have been concentrating on getting my programs sorted out. First time have have been on the thread this weekend.

Note to self: Send stern note to Indonesian authorities saying "Do not have volcanic eruptions at the weekend."

I have to say it cannot be much. It has not even come in on my Smithsonian RSS feed.

Further Edit: Mm, The Volcanism blog has a bit more to say about it.

12,000 evacuated!

Volcano erupts in the Congo

Source: Irish Independent

A volcano in Virunga National Park, in the Congo has erupted. The volcano erupted in eastern Congo, sending lava toward a national park, threatening wildlife, in the sparsely populated region.

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

There is not a lot on this one as yet and it does not even say which of the two volcanoes is erupting. Just add it to the list for the week as they said on the Eruptions! blog.

Here is a little more information about the volcano, but I note that it was erupting in Jan this year. I am wondering if the Irish Independent has got it wrong? You know how accurate newspapers are these days.

EDIT: I think this may be a false alarm. Further into the eruptions blog I came across this comment which would seem to suggest an error. The next post however does post a thermal alert from MODIS (the satellite) so maybe there is something in it. Have to keep an eye out.
Probably worth noting that Etna may be about to do her thing.

Ok, just a gut feeling here, but based on a lot of volcano watching, this baby feels like she's gonna blow big, with the renewed tremors, and ash now, along with everyone returning to their homes... Gotta bad feeling about this....

One must ask themselves WHY so many volcanoes are going off lately?

Understand that earthquakes and volcano activity are related.

Also, that the Bible predicts this sort of thing. And if prophecy is accurate this sort of activity will increase dramatically in the coming years.

I'm starting to think that the whole place (NZ) is just one big volcanic ridge and all these earthquakes are just "tremblors" around the vents
