ATS member in Southern California just announced on a thread they have had many aftershocks today and then a significant quake. Do you have anything on this? Thanks!

Just a guess but I would say that after the huge and long term number of shocks on the Elsinore fault line, Laguna Salada section, and moderately less so on the Coyote Mountain section during the course of this year the stress has finally made it across to the Brawley seismic zone.

It is probably more notable that it has taken so long to do that than the fact that it has done it. There was not a huge amount of stress relief in the Salton area so I suppose this is to be expected.

Just my 2c

Thanks for the info Puterman - my nerves would be a little frayed if I lived there!

Yesterday I felt the house shake twice - shook the windows. Most likely not a tremor but felt like one.

I know we are not quite there yet but I thought folks might be interested in the fall off of 6+ quakes towards the end of this year.(Assuming we don't have bunch more in the next few days!)

Definitely quietened down towards the end.

Yeah its a big dissapointment after all the speculation earlier in the year that this was going to be a record year.
Pretty quiet down here as well overall, right after I said "should break last years record for the number of quakes, as we get 25-30 per day" .......... since then it has been 26,18,15,17, 19,21,10,25,15,18,16,9 per day

We might not break it, unless the revisions come in with a lot of low 2's and 1's during an update.

Never know though, 2007 ended with a 6.8 near Gisborne on 28/12.

Where is everyone

I would have thought with the cold weather up there in the northern hemisphere everyone would be stuck indoors and have a lot of free time to post some stuff.

Raining down here so I have some time on my hands prior to the Christmas Shutdown (early start to the Summer Holidays for me). I may have to do a few trips into the city next week to pick up materials for January, but with the weather forecasting showers or rain right up to Chritmas Eve, I dont think I'll be working.

I thought some of you might be interested in this;
I got the idea off the Iceland Quakes site where they have a graph under their 2 day map showing time versus magnitude.

I've done the same for New Zealand too and been adding it under my daily maps of New Zealand Earthquakes, (back as far as Oct30th so far)

Then I thought how about a contiuous one, it might be helpful to see any trends, and to do another anaylsis of the Moons relationship with the number/size of quakes ie look at the bigger picture.

Heres a link to the page, I'll be updating it going backwards (the image is a png file, which I found was more compressed than bmp or jpg, but its still 1MB size)

Time/ Mag Graph

My Analysis so far:
I haven't spent too much time on looking at any trends, but you can see the tail end of the many Christchurch aftershocks at the start, then the series after the 28/11 Kaituna 5.2 quake in the Wairarapa, (with a bit of a buildup just before too, which was interesting). And what looks like a swarm on 17/11 is not, in fact the quakes were widespread throughout the country, its just coincidence that the bunch occured between 8:00 and 10:00 UTC.
Only one of the 4 Mag5's on the graph occured on a Lunar phase ( 21/11) so that poopoo's that theory right away. Admittedly only over 2 months though,

See if you can see anything.

It seems they kept creeping closer and closer until now there is one right under it. I haven't been watching it closely before though, so I don't know how normal/abnormal it is.

I hear ya on the rain. It's all we have in our forecast too. I would SOOOO much prefer snow on Christmas!!!

Snow here by the way for the last 3 days and more on its way. About 6 ins so far and -10 dec C. Definitely not Irish weather as of late, more like the good old bad old days.

@berkeleygal - at least when it is raining you don't have to feed the birds three time a day! They need their 3 squares in this weather.
