They are terrorists for the simple fact that they induce fear in most of the populace.

This is not true of the older generations, who do not fear the Police and do, still, see them as public servants. And, I can explain a huge reason why so many of the younger generations feel that way.

During my fifteen years in LE, I can't tell you how many times I heard parents tell their small children things like "Do you see that cop, over there? If you don't mind me, he is going to take you to jail." While taking a meal break, in a restaurant, I've even heard parents threaten their kids with the "cop" taking them to jail for not eating their meal! I would always correct them, by telling the kids that I would not do that. Man, that would always infuriate me. To all you parents out there, don't do that.

Mods: Ban the terrorist!

That is neither my goal or is that at all feasible. My point is that the hiring process, the judicial system, and the people whom were "voted" in to make our laws all need to be majorly overhauled. Now I for one am not always breaking the law as you imply, the reason I am overcome with fear by the sight of cops is because I know how a large portion of them think and operate. Again they don't care abput civil service, they get off on the badge and gun. So please don't write off my fears as silly and because I'm a criminal, neither of which is true. Now I will also concede that there are many good cops but they are outnumbered or at least overwhelmed by the number of power drunk and corrupt cops I've known in my time. Don't forget as I mentioned I was a cop too.

lol well speaking of paranoia, ATS staff removed the quote I responded to to you concerning your post. Funny how it was a Not_so_big quote. lol. Anyway... there is no way to deny the amount of paranoia the police departments have instilled upon Americans as minute as it may be. Yes, some people speed, my point is sir, that they are afraid because they don't want to pay the $50 they cannot afford Just_in_case they were speeding, and more so do not wish to spend the countless hours in court contesting it, even if they weren't. they are also afraid if they try to explain to the officer ANYTHING. Never talk back to a police officer...they are your mothers/fathers.
Protect my family please?

I agree that the judicial system and lawmakers need an overhaul. I am a cop and get pissed at our court system and lawmakers. People don't understand that we usually only enforce about 25% of the code section. There is a WHOLE lot of laws out there that could be enforced that officers just don't care about.

I don't write off anyones fears. I try to understand them. I really think you need to understand some real ratios when it comes to cop/people encounters. Here is an example:

Law Enforcement officers at every level (federal, state, local) across the globe have hundreds of MILLIONS of encounters with citizens each year. My department alone for 2009 (our stats just came out before Christmas) had 287,776 encounters with the citizens of this city and county. Out of all of those encounters there was 1 incident that was questioned by the public and was found, after an investigation, that the officer was out of line and was fired.

So with numbers like this, people who think there is an active police state, that we are all Nazi's, and SOME compare us to terrorists...its just not the case. Maybe it feels that way to someone who has delt with the cops a few times, but other than that...its a huge misconception.

As a former officer (not sure if in a small town or big city) you know there are a lot more casual good encounters than there are bad.

Just for those that don't read the rules..

Warnings for excessive quoting, and how to quote

Please edit the quoted portion to the salient material needed to make your point! There is no need to repeat entire posts within the body of your response. Too many and too large quotes hampers the readability of our busy and populated message threads.

Quote the post immediately before yours: This makes no sense, and quoting the entire previous post above yours will result in a slight warning.

Quoting an entire post: Size doesn't matter unless the post is already small, less than 3 sentences. You will receive a warning if you quote an entire post that exceeds four or more sentences.

Compound quoting: If you quote someone quoting someone, this will result in a penalty.

When we bother to read and follow the rules, we look far less foolish

"if you hate cops and the idea of law enforcement or fear us that much, write your local congressman and tell him you want to rid your city, town, county, or state of all LEO's. Let them know you and the other people will take care of everything and respond to all the 911 calls. I am 100% serious here...write them and ask to disband all your county public service LEO's and fend for yourselves. Try it for awhile and lets see what happens."

-------------------------------------------

I'll bet you the common citizens can do a much better job of it than you all are.

First off we know what if feels like to be abused by an oppressive entitiy like yourselves.

I disagree about your notion that only people who have done wrong feel anxiety when cops come around. That's the old fantasy world mentality leaking in again. Your refusal to see the other side of the coin only perpetuates the distrust that continues to grow in light of the abuse.

Second, rather than doing the "you do it yourself" cop out why don't we all try and reverse the trend here.

We could start by changing the colors of your uniforms back to the color blue instead of the intimidating SS black like it is now.

We could institute more humane training that does not involve this beat first and ask questions later. We might try and have you all try and diffuse situations rather than escalate them as your training institutes at the present time. The one up approach is a proof positive that your training damands escalation rather than diffusion.

Another problem that is a side issue here is the War on Drugs that have changed your stances from protectors to predators and in the case of the DEA, outright thieves who confiscate propterty in order to fund themselves. But this is a whole other can of worms that must be dealt with eventually too in order to reverse the downward slope that you cops are on.

We need to take away your pain compliance Taser toys too. Bad cops, very bad cops!

But the fundamental thing that has to change is you all's training. Nobody is asking you all to go all touchy feely but damn man. Everybody tries to avoid you all now because you've hurt so many people with the abusive training that you all have received. Change this and things will improve.

I also believe that a civilian panel needs to be set up to investigage citizen complaints against cops that has disciplinary powers over you all. As it is right now the cops are a huge self serving and protecting family and this just has to change. The them and us mentality has got to go and the cops need to be held more accountable to their actions then they are at present.

I want the old days of cops are our friends back. Cops should be looked on like firefighters... Heroes. But they are not now. We can change it back if we all try.

I worked for Phoenix PD. And of course you are right on with most of what you said BUT the time I spent listening to my friend, former chief, and there myself I was completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of cover ups, dirty cop encounters, and people I met that were there for the wrong reasons. It was enough to send me packing from the career I had dreamed of since being a kid! THAT is what keeps me nervous every time I see a cop! There were a handful of us "good cops" and then the ones that were always bullying, too intense, thought they were on a battlefield, pedophile cops, drug addicts, and I shouldn't have to tell you of the number of cops that are alcoholics! It's just not a good sit.! I am not ok with cops these days, now the cops I knew growing up, (dad and grandpa were cops too) were good ol boys but it's out of control! That's all I'm gonna say..

As stated in my post to the other member, I think that fear you believe is in a majority of the people is just not true. The OH @#&% I got caught is in all of us of course but that is not the fear I am worried about.

As for the $50 speeding fine, don't speed!

I have people argue with me about things. Thats not an issue, but when I clock you doing 85 in a 45 and when I walk up with a ticket and you want to rant and rave and tell me there you don't deserve a ticket, you weren't speeding, and then try to go into some long drawn out defense...of course I will not stand there and let you continue on. It does neither one of us any good to try and prolong the stop.

I see that you've only recently registered here on ATS. Not sure how much time you spent reading the threads dealing with LEO here, but prepare yourself. They are never pretty. There is seldom calm, clear debate. Just a lot of "all cops are bad", unsubstantiated bashing.

I am always, especially entertained by those posts that go something like "Well I know all cops are jerks because ever one of the 100 cops I've had run-ins with were!" I know people who have gone their whole lives without even being stopped for a traffic violation, but some of these posters appear to have a confrontation with LE, on a monthly basis. And, they can't seem to figure out that the only common denominator in all of those confrontations is "themselves'

Anyway, welcome!

Well you can believe it's not true all you want. That doesn't make it not true.
85 in a 45 is a big issue, I agree with you there! You aren't getting what I'm trying to say tho, obviously. Poeple who don't speed are equally paranoid. People know that cops have a quota (at least smart ones) and people also realize that cops will pull you over for ANYTHING. they will find something. Are you saying these cops aren't real? wrong pal.

Debate logically with a guy who states that 1 in 10000 cops would turn on their own family if martial law was started as long as the $$$$ kept coming in? How the hell do you debate such rubbish?

I never said youd turn on your own family I said youd turn a blind eye. So if you want to debate logically you can stop lying about what I said and address my words instead of yours.

Look you can preach all the feel good "rubbish" you want, the fact is that totalitarian states DO HAPPEN and they most often happen with the help and outright compliance of the police and military.

Your wishful thinking on the subject isnt going to change that fact now or ever.

Sure there are traffic cops who WILL pull people over for every violation the law allows. Again the law ALLOWS. I agree many of these laws could be removed from the books, but at the same time those little laws have allowed us to catch some of the big fish (i.e. murderers, rapists, etc)

As for the quota...I will say this, 90% of your departments actually DO NOT have a quota. The other 10% are run in ways to suggest you give citations for major violation because YES they need the funds. Its no secret. But the quota idea of an officer needs 50 tickets a month or loses his job/gets in trouble IS NOT TRUE!

A blind eye to what? Your assuming I would make a deal with the devil for some cash?? Hell of an assumption.

And sure in countries that have gone to crap the military and police DO help oppress thier own people...thank god I don't live in one of those countries.

Are you in the U.S.?
