While most Canadian students are preparing to face another school year, some are also preparing for takeoff. Four Canadian students chosen from a pool of applicants from the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary, and the University of Saskatchewan will attend a week-long intensive course offered by the University of Oslo from November 9-13, 2009 in sounding rockets and payload instrument design.
They’ll also launch their “small payloads,” a term which refers to a sounding rocket that isn’t as big as a full satellite, at the Andoya Rocket Range on an island in northern Norway.

I am sorry ... I am not buying into the "exploding rocket" story just yet.
Actually, I am a little surprised, if not disappointed at some posters who, once given an "explanation", simply give up and say things like "solved" ... or "nothing to see here - move along".
Since when do ATS'ers accept the first explanation offered - even if it does sound plausible?!
As I've said before, I don't know what it is but I've got this niggling feeling that this is much bigger than the "exploding rocket" story.
WTF! If I could possibly make a rocket launch look like this, I would be a rich sumbch! I could be decorating the skies for weddings, etc(for very wealthy people of course). I don't know what it is, but I don't buy the 'failed rocket theory'.

from this it looks like point of origin is behind the mountain, terrestrial. IS there a research or military facility there?

So because you sell missiles (read=fireworks) you are the authority on fuel venting from a rocket and making it spiral out of control? I am sure you have seen this type of incident before...I mean whilst you were "testing" your "missiles"

I can diss-spell one line of thinking here and that is that this is a missile or a rocket. I work in the ballistics industry, make rockets and missiles, well i dont make them i sell them but that is not caused by any rocket or missile.
To me this looks like a quantum mechanical event, seriously, look at how uniformed the circling patterns are. Whatever it is its disrupting ALL the matter around it.
VERY COOL!!!!!!!

as kwl as these images are...im sure theres a boring explanation to it
Are you saying that activation time of EISCAT corelates to the spiral event?

is it not just the above?
Would you like to use Facebook in Norsk (bokmål)?

Well, I think it's a rocket. Next picture shows the perspective or the point of origin of the "beam" very clear.
