We have speculation, writings and articles from blogs and so on. I don't take those as facts. We actually don't have facts.

As i have stated before I am a medical student in Lviv. I have 1st hand reports from our teachers who are doctors at the hospital. They gave us the following info before the university closed-

It is different from swine flu,
kills much faster than swine flu,
and kills more number of people when compared to swine flu.

And I do not doubt the words of my teachers.

I just find this to be weird:

"Initial reports denied the outbreak was due to H1N1 even though there is virtually no seasonal flu circulating in Europe (or North America). The explosion in cases of acute respiratory illness (ARI), in view of the exploding H1N1 pandemic throughout the northern hemisphere, would signal involvement in the cases in Ukraine."

Winter just started and seasonal flu's are up.

Ukraine PLAGUE is NOT H1N1! Western media PROVEN to be LYING!! H1N1 vaccine will NOT help.

Ukraine "mutated" H1N1 Swine Flu has killed 3000 people very quickly, NO CURE, NO VACCINE PNEUMONIC

www.youtube.com...

A vew reports from Ukraine sites, saying that the plague is not H1N1

If anyone in intrested, ture or not you decide.

Thanks don (i made the vids to raise some awareness). I do realize that they have regular h1n1 over there too.. but all of my sources confirm that there is a mystery plague as well, either simply bacterial in natural, or a virus that leads to the bacterial infection.

So I am not trying to claim that it is for sure a mutated form of h1n1 or anything, I just titled the video as that so more people would become aware of this situation

And somebody wanted to see the artcle that referenced the 131 deg lungs... well its in that video, but heres a link:

Based on current reported case mortality rates and the demographics of the effected I would agree with your observation up to a point. The infection rate seems to be higher, if the published numbers are correct, than what we have seen in the past. If that is true then we may be seeing the clad of the virus with the mutation that makes it more communicable. This was identified in Northern Europe earlier this year, I am sorry but I don't have the link. If the CFR comes in at .05% or so you are correct. If we see an order of magnitude jump in the CFR then the virus has mutated to a more pathogenic strain or is something else.

No offense but Cloudsinthesky has had some "OK" news on swine flu but he's also passed on some pretty far out reports which didn't add up

Do you really want me to start bringing up some of your reports.....?

I am pointing out that there are reports of bleeding from the ears.......and if true....you are going to have to back off the H1N1 theory.....not that there is not a coraltion between whats happening in Ukraine and H1N1 world wide......

We don't have the facts, just reports..........Until then you or anyone cannot claim its just H1N1

Now as far as calling me out...Do you really want to go there with me on ATS?

I wanted to see it.

And that's far from reliable news source to me. It's more or less like a blog.

Of course, feel free to trust it if you want to. I don't.

Seems the viral community who works on this all the time has their view also. If the report is correct and four health workers have died from this infection then it is something to think about.

Do you know what the expected death ratio is between health care workers and patients?

Thanks for the link

Finally MSM www.ft.com...

Ukraine braced for swine flu outbreak

Ukraine on Friday shut schools, banned large public gatherings and imposed travel restrictions for three weeks – some of the most drastic measures taken across the globe to contain swine flu – after confirming that a sudden and swift outbreak has claimed at least 11 lives.

Campaigning for the hotly contested presidential contest in January has also been put off. Observers said the far sweeping moves to combat the flu are partly rooted in the political rivalry between Victor Yushchenko, president, and Yulia Tymoshenko, his prime minister, with each trying to outdo the other and be seen assertively handling the outbreak.

In the latest figures released this weekend, officials said more than 50 died of pneumonia and other suspected H1N1 sicknesses. More than 2,000 people were hospitalised in connection with the “epidemic” that broke out in October in western regions of the country that border the European Union.

Ukraine’s immediate EU neighbours, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia pledged to provide aid after Kiev appealed for international assistance. This weekend, World Health Organisation officials announced a visit to Ukraine to help determine the severity of the outbreak.

Fourteen cases of H1N1 have been confirmed thus far, a sharp rise from the first two infections confirmed this summer. Experts had warned that the recession-battered country, with its dilapidated and under-financed hospitals, would struggle to contain an outbreak.

On Friday, Mr Yushchenko said that 11 people were “confirmed to have died from swine flu”.

In a panic, many citizens flocked to pharmacies seeking to purchase medication and masks. Existing stocks quickly sold out fast sparking panic and anger at the government.

Earlier on Friday, Ms Tymoshenko warned that licences would be evoked for pharmacies that were caught overcharging for medication

Hey Former_USSR can you hear something from your location, like a aeroplane, humming noise at a distance. I definitely heard it. It was there for like 5 whole mins. Looked out of the window, did not see anything I never hear aeroplanes in where I live. I am here for nearly 2 years now, and have never heard a plane overhead. And there are no cars on the street, NONE, so couldn't be traffic also. Wierd...maybe they are spraying...its 1.11AM here

Every symptom listed matches previous wine flu cases

The "rapid death" swine flu cases all died in a few hours, how much faster can something kill you?

The numbers are bad there but still don't hold a candle to what was seen in Mexico City.

What I have noticed is that the lower the temperature is combined with high humidity the more cases are reported. We just had another outbreak in Indiana which had a sustained condition of 47F and 58% humidity (avg).

The Ukraine has had a sustained condition of 20-30F and 80% humidity.
That's what flu season is, cold temps and high humidity.

Keep in mind there are three courses we see in swine flu patients -
1. Rapid death from immune response (lung damage)
2. Long lasting flu leading to pneumonia
3. Mild, short flu

What we don't know is how or why it affects some people one way and some another. The largest number of cases in past outbreaks has often been the longer lasting variant which is where the practice of handing out antibiotics has come from. If you can avoid other people and protect yourself when you do go out you can avoid getting the virus.

Can someone look up the schedule for Lviv airport (LWO) Dunno from where I could get it. I am damn sure I heard a plane....In India I live next to an airport, I keep hearing this sort of noise all the time. Like a plane flying into the distance...

Take care, Asen. Hope you can avoid catching it.... whatever it is.

Didn't realize you were a medical student until I just read your prevous post....now I really feel stupid for my recommendations yesterday about how to keep safe by handwashing, etc.. You obviously know about all that.

I also didn't realize that you were getting information straight from the medical community.....all I can say is....wow. Thanks for updating us with current "inside" information. I really appreciate it.

From what I have been able to gather is that the normal seasonal flu is, at least in North America, only about 1% of all confirmed flu cases and at this point all flu in the US is expected to be N1H1. I have not seen the numbers for the rest of the world. The author may have just used the North American data or, and I think this is the truth, he has much better information than we do.

In any case this is another data point to look at. Each of us has to judge how valid each and every data point is.

I am sorry but I don't. I think that the more novel a pathogen is and how early in the cycle will have a big impact. As doctors and staff learn about the pathogen they will be better able to protect themselves.

Feel free to do so, I haven't passed on anything I feel weird about.

Bleeding from the ears is a symptom of a very high fever or a ruptured eardrum. (And cancer but that really doesn't apply in this case).

We have had reports of shedding of skin and bleeding from the mouth, ears and nose in swine flu patients. Maybe it would help if you would specify exactly what you think this symptom indicates?

I haven't seen any reports of "bleeding from the ears" but even if I did it wouldn't rule out swine flu, especially given the previous reports of high fevers and desquamification. What I don't see is how that symptom means we're dealing with something else.
