It's really a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Keep doing what's been done and the US is accused of kissing Israeli butt.
You introduce a little "CHANGE" and Israel will be forced to defend itself if and when it gets attacked, then the US gets blamed for not getting involved.
Geez.

What's worse?

Didn't the Israelis get the memo that Obama is the Messiah? I mean it's on the News outlets 24/7 over here.

Barack Obama certainly does not seem as willing as George W. Bush was to bow to Israels wishes, and with Netanyahu seemingly adament that Jerusalem will not be divided, the prospect of any real peace agreement seems very distant.

Seems Obama isn't aware of the Bible verse that says what a country does to Israel so shall it be done to them. And those who bless Israel will be blessed. It's been true for over 200 years now.

We are a sovereign nation, as is Israel, would we be pissed if someone wanted to, er I mean DEMANDED that we divide ourselves??

Israel will never be divided, get over it Obama/Muslims.

I can't think of a reason for the Israelis to NOT be irritated with Obama.

I'm an American, and I'm already sick of his damned stupidity.

He's tanking the economy, his world apology tour was a disaster, he's embarrassed the living **** out of me as an American, so - what's not to dislike?

Oh he isn't? Oprah says so, Farrakhan says so, he has a video with schoolchildren singing him worship songs. CNN, NBC, et cetra trip over each other to be the first to say how fantastical he is.

Sorry, not convinced, that's all messiahish to me, especially since he had no experience to be president an d half the country along with the media were slobbering over him. That right there tells you he has supernatural abilities.

Um, yeah.

Some of you seem to think that the US supports Israel out of some sort of (misguided) altruism. This isn't the case. The US supports Israel for the benefit of the US, not for the benefit of Israel.

This is true about all our foreign aid and humanitarian efforts. While it might help people, we're doing it because it helps us (or, we think it will help us). If it ever turned out that it would be better to bomb those same people, we'd do it in a heartbeat. If you don't believe me, look at Iraq.

You need to distinguish between the reasons for an act, and the *explanation* for that act. The reasons for protecting Israel range from the Religious Right wanting to foster their biblical prophecies, to our military wanting to have a presence in the predominately hostile Middle East. These are the reasons for protecting Israel.

The *explanations* are much nobler-sounding. Defending the underdog against overwhelming odds. Preventing another Holocaust. Supporting a democratic country in a region riddled with dictatorships and theocracies. How noble of us, right? That's why politicians say these things. They want the support of the American people. But it's a crock.

If it ever turns out that the US decides its interests would be better served by bombing Israel out of existence, you can bet that suddenly Israel will disappear. The US is looking out for its own interests. Never let anyone tell you otherwise.

Why do we let them push us around? What excatly do they bring to the table? ext

What exactly the Israelis bring to the table in the overall sense is a balance of power, world power.

You do not let one dominant world power get the upper hand, simple concept! Perhaps you are too young or too idealistic to understand. The fact is that the balance of power must be/is maintained.

I dont really get Obama, I think the health care scheme is a good idea. I also think that the people who were calling him evil for announcing it are over reacting. In Britain we have the NHS, sure it aint perfect and it I pay into it every week. But if anything happens to me or any pther family member they will recieve help. Id hate to live in a country where if you was ill, but you couldnt afford health care you would be left to rot!!

Anyway back on topic, I dont think anything will come of this. Obama needs Isreal, for the time being. They have no qualms about going to war and they have a formidable air force. Which is always beneficial. Isreal also needs the USA as the USA is kind of like the play ground bully. They will step into to help Isreal, or just "warn" other countries off attacking Isreal. They have a beneficial relationship, and I cant see them giving this up.

As for the guy who said lets cancel all foreign debt, Iv often thought who these people are that lend trillions of £'s or $'s to governments and where they got the money in the first place. And what could they do if all the government that owed them money refused to pay.

I never understood why America was so bent on helping Israel.
They don't really want peace.

In the 70's when Israel won at war with Eygpt, the eygptians complained to OPEC and they stopped giving gas to all nations with ties to Isarel. The gas shortages of the 70's.

If that happened now, what do you think would happen?

Why do we let them push us around? What excatly do they bring to the table?

Israel is at the forefront of technological and medical research for one thing - and they have been point man in the middle east for a long time though now their position is tenuous at best - however when you say Israel doesn't want peace that may be but try to keep in mind that the Palestinians don't want peace either - they want to see Israel wiped off the face of the map and their flag even reflects this - the Palestinian flag includes Israel as part of greater Palestine and not as an independent state apart from Palestine. And this has been true since the very beginning...Their constitution also has words to this effect - if I find it I will post...none of the issues on either side bodes well for peace...They are both intractable.

Obama isn't very popular in Israel from what I can tell from reading comments on JPost articles etc.

I don't think there's any government involvement in that unpopularity. Mostly the media whipping it up.

Of course they dont like him - he is using the words ` peace` and `israel` in the same sentence -

thats the land the zionists wants - and slowly , they are taking it.

remember - the zionists do not care about anyone other than themselves - they attacked the USS Liberty for 3 hours.

ntice how i say zionists and not jews - most of the repressed jews in israel are suffering at the media and zionist propaganda.

Israel is more than capable of looking after itself, if they were attacked by a coalition of powers again like in the six day war in 1970, they would destroy the invading armies becasue of their advanced Aircraft, Tanks and navy, and just the small matter of their nuclear stockpile which is estimated to number in the hundreds.

If America did leave Israel to its own devices it may force them to come to the table to negotiate, which would be no bad thing....

The reason that some Israelis are peeved with Obama is that they perceive him to be taking a pro-Palestinian stance by making settlements the key issue to peace. The Israeli understanding of the situation is that the key obstacle to peace is continued Palestinian hatred towards Israel, in word and in deed, rather than where Jews choose to build homes.

In actual fact the situation is fairly intractable. To simplify things somewhat, Israelis will not give Palestinians their own state until the Palestinians give Israelis peace and security. Palestinians will not give Israelis peace and security until they have their own state. And there is a fear that once they have their own state it will be used to launch further attacks against Israelis (e.g. Gaza).

I'm not sure that Obama is making settlements the key issue, but thanks to the media that is the popular perception.

I am a Netanyahu supporter who thinks Obama is doing a good job.

(had to mention it in order to counter the ridiculous idea that pro-Israelis are automatically anti-Obama).

Me too, but I wanted to give some context to some of the anti-Obama sentiment I see coming out of Israel.

I think this whole thing is probably politically motivated. People with agendas sewing seeds of division.

No one knows history in the future. And the not eveyone on earth believes in the many different versions of the bible. I mean what if texas succedes, whichwould suck. I think in 50 years there will be a war of armageddon in which the political boundaries will change radically, especially in the middle east. After all the US has major interests in that region. Who knows the US might change israel or take over it if oil was found there or something. You never know what changes are going to take place. Heck people used to think the Roman empire would last forever. I think Israel will attack and invade syria, not Iran as everyone in the media has been showing. My bet is that Syria will get invaded, and most of it will be conquered. Not iran.

I don't think Israel would have anything to gain from attacking Syria. As long as they hang onto the Golans Syria is not much of a threat.

If Syria tries to invade Lebanon again, things may change. But I can't see that happening because Syria has learnt the result of that before.

Believe it or not Israel is not an aggressive country, in spite of the propaganda. Every war they've fought has been a result of defending themselves from external attacks.
